Reborn Cat Sheriff
Chapter 534 Emergency
Chapter 534 Emergency
Under the dim light, the artificial hill in the small garden swayed in the light, and something strange seemed to be moving inside the gaps in the dark leaves.
Once humans returned to their own homes, the whole world seemed to turn into a cat paradise.
A jet-black cat peeked out from a branch halfway up a tree, a leaf dangling from its mouth, seemingly playing some kind of game. Another cat paced along the wall, its elegance unaffected by the dim light. In the corner, two fat cats huddled together, licking their own fur and then each other's. Noticing that the spot they'd licked had been flattened by the other, they quickly stuck out their tongues again to make it stand up, busy as bees.
Several cats were running and playing rapidly in the grass, occasionally stopping abruptly and then spinning around to slip away from under their pursuers, causing them to miss their target and fall flat on their face.
On the other side, two cats were attracted by the inexplicable chirping of insects that accompanied the arrival of spring. After pinpointing the location, they stealthily crept over to search for prey. A cricket was startled out of the grass by them and then fell into the mouth of one of the cats.
Meanwhile, more cats obediently gathered behind Lingo, quietly watching their leader and waiting for his battle orders as usual.
"But there's no mission I've assigned you all here today!"
Lin Ge yawned lazily, indicating that his underlings were free to do as they pleased; today was just a boring routine gathering.
After the cats had dispersed, Lin Ge patted the head of the limping cat that had come over to fawn over him. Once the cat had returned to its wife with a satisfied smug tail, Lin Ge looked around at his underlings.
After a few months apart, my underlings have changed a bit.
Some cats didn't come. I don't know if they left Zhangzhou or something happened, or maybe they were adopted by some kind person.
Then there were some unfamiliar cats at the scene, and even seven or eight tiny kittens that looked like they had been born recently. They were brought by their mother to meet the leader, and from then on, they began to receive the leader's protection. These kittens, who were seeing Lingo for the first time, were not afraid of him at all. Two of them even stumbled over and fell down in front of Lingo, lay down, curled up their legs, exposed their bellies, and made cute whimpering sounds.
But they were quickly drawn to the sounds of other cats playing around them, and after rolling around on the spot, they couldn't wait to join in.
In the pavilion on the other side, the mother hawksbill turtle sat proudly on a stone table, surrounded by a whole circle of female cats. She resembled a haughty queen, with a majestic money tree as her guard; the scene seemed more formal than the relaxed atmosphere on Lingo's side. After jumping off the stone table, the mother hawksbill turtle patiently approached the female cats, sniffing them gently and purring softly, as if teaching them something.
Not long after, two female kittens that looked unwell were brought to Lingo by the mother tortoiseshell. Upon closer inspection, Lingo realized they were sick and nodded to the mother tortoiseshell.
"Meow~"
The mother hawksbill turtle was very satisfied with Lingo's attitude. She flicked her tail, rubbed against him, and then lay down behind him.
The Money Tree, seemingly unconcerned, excitedly wagged its tail and joined the kittens. Soon, the little ones treated it like a toy, climbing all over it. Judging from the Money Tree's contented, half-closed-eye expression, it appeared to be enjoying itself as well.
'Splash splash splash splash...'
A silly cat climbing a rockery was kicked by a bad guy on its head. Despite gripping the ground tightly, it still slid down in a flash.
When Lin Ge looked at it, he realized that the one who did the bad thing was none other than Little Tiger.
It stood atop the artificial hill like a lion king, crouching proudly as if surveying its subjects. Unfortunately, it soon lost interest and rolled off the hill, colliding with the silly cat that was still climbing up.
Lin Ge watched the scene quietly. Although the restless cats running around and causing some chaos, the overall atmosphere pleased him. Seeing several male cats in the corner fawning over a calico cat in heat, Lin Ge simply ignored them, deciding not to care which cat would ultimately benefit. Or, to put it another way, the healthy breeding of the pack was more important to Lin Ge than simply possessing a cat just because it was pretty.
As the moon gradually climbed overhead, the cats' gathering quickly came to an end.
After Lingo led the two sick cats and his own group away, the other cats dispersed and went back to their resting places. Of course, some cats were quite satisfied with this little garden, said hello to the lame cat, and settled down there.
Especially for the kittens that are three or four months old, this gathering marks the time when they leave their mother's protection and begin to live on their own.
A mother cat with a pack will naturally continue to protect her kittens and live with other cats. But some solitary mother cats, about to enter their next heat cycle, will have to separate from their kittens. Some kittens are prepared for this; some, seeing their mother disappear without a trace, anxiously circle around, unsure where to go.
But soon, the lame cat took over two seemingly obedient little guys, and the dashing cat from the oil city neighborhood also took one. After a brief period of panic and anxiety, the other cats also quickly made a decision: to refuse to join the group and instead embark on the difficult adventure of living alone and building their own group.
Anyway, they've already memorized Lingo's scent. If they ever get hungry, they can sneak into the police station yard and fill their bellies before coming out.
Lin Ge didn't intend to concern himself with nature's natural selection process, nor did he intend to become a saintly protector of stray cats. After bringing the two sick female cats into the police station compound, he didn't care where they slept that night.
Back at the cat shelter, Lin Ge discovered that Anxi hadn't come over that evening.
That makes sense! She spent the whole day playing in the cattery, and after being caught by her mother yesterday for sneaking out, Anxi naturally wouldn't dare to do it again today. Besides, she now has friendly new friends, so she's much less dependent on the cats.
All in all, it's a good thing!
This unfortunate girl was eventually able to gradually emerge from the shadow of her father's accident with the help of various parties.
Nothing happened that night, and the little tigers didn't come back at all.
Lin Ge didn't pay them any attention, after all, they were all grown up and no longer needed their parents' company.
Just like the snowclaw budgie already has a wife, the little budgie will eventually find its other half and start a family.
It might not stay at the police station with its mother and family like the Snowclaw Tiger. This little tiger, who has always loved roaming outside, might leave the police station to build its own home. Lin Ge wouldn't stop it when that happens; he would only be happy for it.
When Lin Ge woke up early the next morning, he found that the little tabby had returned sometime earlier. Its fur was all messy, as if it had been in a fight with someone.
Meanwhile, on the other side, the snowclaw budgie was having a tiff with the little ragdoll. The little ragdoll pinned the snowclaw budgie to the ground, tearing at its neck fur and biting hard, leaving the poor snowclaw daring not to struggle but unable to move, only able to make pitiful whimpering sounds.
As for the matter of those two little rascals, not only Lin Ge, but even the mother hawksbill turtle and the baby hawksbill turtle completely ignored it.
After Ringo left yesterday, the two female cats spent some time playing with other female cats in the pack, seemingly returning late at night to take a nap. Even Money Tree hasn't returned yet; it appears to be engrossed in its kitten nest.
Not long after dawn, Anxi arrived at the cattery with great enthusiasm.
Since Zhang Yining and Hu Miao went to school today, she was once again left alone. But even so, her mood seemed completely different from before. She carried a shoulder bag with several books inside, seemingly intending to study hard here.
Unfortunately, she couldn't hold on for more than half an hour before she was quickly drawn in by the little doll's sweet cries.
"Mimi, are you still not up? Sun Chang and the others are coming back this afternoon, and Boss Nie wants us to go to the welcoming site at the station to maintain order."
Li Siyu's voice rang out from outside the door. After running in, she saw Anxi and was stunned for a moment.
For some reason, the scene before her eyes felt somewhat familiar. It seemed that she had experienced a similar situation a few months ago, and then Nie Guoqiang had tricked her into staying at the police station, never to have the chance to leave again.
Now that her work is on track, she has less time to help with cleaning and sanitation at the cattery, and she sometimes has to sacrifice her precious lunch break.
"So... this kid is the one Boss Nie found to replace me?" Li Siyu felt a surge of resentment, but it quickly turned into speechless absurdity. This kid clearly looked like a minor. Even if Boss Nie was arrogant, he wouldn't go this far, would he?
Then, she learned an unbelievable piece of news from Anxi: this girl had actually been tricked into coming here by Zheng Mingxing.
"Teacher Zheng has gone astray too!"
Li Siyu was speechless for a moment, and even thought to herself that at least she got paid for taking care of the cat back then, but this poor girl in front of her was tricked into working for free without getting a single penny of wages.
The two girls chatted for a while, and when Li Siyu saw that Lin Ge was still pretending to be asleep, she impatiently walked over and pinched his ear.
"Mimi, wake up!"
"Ow~"
Lin Ge winced in pain, but finally obediently got up under Li Siyu's angry glare.
While inwardly complaining that the woman had become different and more violent, she also felt helpless, realizing that this seemed to be an inevitable experience for every female police officer, whose tempers became increasingly complex as they handled more and more cases.
As for Li Siyu's suggestion to help out at the bus station, Lin Ge hesitated. While welcoming Sun Chang and the others was the right thing to do, Lin Ge didn't want to go so early. Besides, with all sorts of people—government officials, members of the public, media—going there alone as a cat would easily attract attention, and things could easily get messy. Moreover, what kind of role was a police cat suited for such menial work?
So, taking advantage of Li Siyu tidying up the cat house and not noticing him, Lin Ge secretly slipped out.
Remembering what firefighter Xiong Han had said on Saturday about going to Youcheng Elementary School to award honors to the six little ones, Lin Ge turned a corner and strolled over there.
However, he woke up too late and arrived at school after morning exercises had already ended, missing the award ceremony he had been somewhat looking forward to. Lin Ge only saw Xie Zaiqi being playfully teased by several classmates, his certificate and prize being passed around among them. Zhang Yining, Hu Miao, and Wei Li were surrounded by several girls talking, while Nie Zhuangzhuang and Zheng Jiacheng were boasting arrogantly in the crowd. School leaders continued speaking on stage, while photographers filmed on the sidelines. The scene seemed quite formal; it was just unknown whether the six little ones would have a chance to appear on television this time.
Lin Ge was somewhat disappointed that he didn't see any excitement.
So he obediently returned to the police station and found that Li Siyu had already gone to work in the service hall. He found the two sick female cats hiding in a corner of the yard and decided to take them to Huang Qi for a check-up right away.
The distance was a bit far, and the two sick kittens didn't seem brave enough to take the bus, so Lin Ge had to lead them on foot.
Fortunately, it wasn't the weekend, and there weren't many pedestrians on the road in the morning, so the journey was relatively smooth. Halfway through, Nie Guoqiang called, but Lin Ge hung up immediately. Another half hour passed before they finally arrived at Huang Qi's pet hospital.
Several months later, Huang Qi's pet hospital had undergone many changes. Both the interior and exterior had been renovated, and the signboard was shiny and high-end, indicating that he had taken a lot of money from Li Yiduo.
When Lin Ge went inside, he found that the original rough acrylic partitions had been replaced with small rooms with wooden partitions, some even two-story ones, which made the cats' activity space much larger than before.
Looking through the transparent glass door, Lin Ge saw that the two cats sleeping soundly inside were still among the dozens of cats Li Yiduo had adopted. Logically, their spaying/neutering should have been completed, so Lin Ge could only guess that they had accidentally fallen ill. Then, in another corner of the 'ward,' he saw a weak female cat that still smelled of blood; upon closer sniffing, he could detect a strange, metallic scent.
As Lin Ge was pondering what this somewhat familiar smell could be, he looked up and saw Huang Qi carrying a large tray out of the inner room, on which were several wriggling little fleshy balls.
"Damn, so it was a baby delivery?"
Lin Ge suddenly realized.
He had seen the white cat give birth before, so it's no wonder the smell seemed familiar.
The two sick kittens, who had also smelled the same scent, were trembling and trying to run away, but now they inexplicably calmed down and quietly lay behind Lin Ge, watching Huang Qi put the little kittens into their mother's arms.
The mother cat struggled to turn over, and Lin Ge then noticed that all the fur on her upper side near her abdomen had been shaved off, revealing only a hideous centipede scar.
It seems this kitten had a difficult birth, which is why Huang Qi had to perform a cesarean section on it. This is also why the newborn kittens were placed in their mother's arms at the same time.
All in all, mother and child are safe and sound, and Lin Ge breathed a sigh of relief.
Looking at Huang Qi again, he seemed more agreeable now. A good veterinarian is one who can help cats solve all sorts of problems, and this one was clearly much better than the other pet hospitals that Lin Ge knew of.
"Hey! Mimi, what a rare guest!"
After finishing his work, Huang Qi took off his gloves and came over to greet Lin Ge. Seeing the two cats behind Lin Ge, he instantly recognized their genders and winked at Lin Ge teasingly, saying, "What, changed girlfriends? Aren't you afraid your wife will kill you?"
"idiot!"
Lin Ge's goodwill towards Huang Qi vanished instantly. He then turned around, went behind the two sick kittens, and pushed them both in front of Huang Qi.
"Tsk!"
Seeing this, Huang Qi immediately understood what it meant.
Don't be fooled by the fact that this cat can't speak; it's incredibly clever at making humans understand what it means.
So Huang Qi wasted no time, swiftly scooping up one of the mother cats. Without needing a machine for diagnosis or asking about the symptoms, he simply gently kneaded the struggling cat's belly a couple of times, then examined its nose and mouth by pinching its head, and thus determined the general situation.
"Hiss... Feline rhinotracheitis! That's a contagious disease, and you just casually brought it over?"
Huang Qi was taken aback, and his expression turned serious.
Although treating the disease wasn't difficult for him, the contagiousness of feline rhinotracheitis forced Huang Qi to consider more. He knew that Ling Ge had a large herd of cats, and with so many cats gathered together, cross-infection could easily occur…
Although the mortality rate of feline rhinotracheitis is not high, its high infectivity and the harm it causes to cats' bodies are still not a minor issue.
"Fuck!"
Lin Ge was also startled, his eyes widening in astonishment and his expression changing instantly.
He never imagined that this seemingly weak and sickly creature was suffering from feline rhinotracheitis virus, one of the three major killers of cats! To make matters worse, he had gathered dozens of cats for a team-building activity the night before, meaning that many cats had been in close contact with this sick cat! Stray cats are unlikely to have been vaccinated, which means that any cats that had contact with the infected cat last night could have been infected with the virus.
"A mother hawksbill turtle! And the kittens at home! And those kittens from yesterday~"
Lin Ge shuddered slightly, suddenly realizing he had done something incredibly foolish. Every time he called his men for team-building activities, he had never considered the issue of infectious diseases! He knew perfectly well that many stray cats died from this condition.
"Ow~"
No longer caring about anything else, Lin Ge roared anxiously at Huang Qi.
His emotions even frightened the other cats in the room, especially the female cat who had just had surgery, who even struggled to get up and run away.
