Reborn Cat Sheriff

Chapter 48: Conflict

Chapter 48: Conflict
When they reached the end of the pedestrian street, Lin Ge was exhausted and refused to continue no matter how Qian Wei tried to coax him.

Qian Wei was also stubborn. He insisted on stopping Lin Ge from going back and tried to persuade him to walk around some more so that he could finish shopping this afternoon.

"You think a cat has the same stamina as a big, clumsy guy like you?"

Lin Ge rolled his eyes. Seeing that Qian Wei was blocking him from walking on the pedestrian street, he simply turned around and walked across the main road. Although there were a lot of cars and electric bikes were reckless there, at least it would ensure that Lin Ge could get home and sleep earlier.

It was a red light, and seven or eight people were standing under the awning waiting for the light to turn green. Since the pedestrian green light had just ended, it would probably take another minute or two.

"Alright, alright, it's fine to patrol this area."

Qian Wei reluctantly gave in, standing beside Lin Ge and rambling on and on. This guy rarely spoke, and it was unclear why he was being so long-winded with a cat.

Just then, an elderly man with white hair carrying a supermarket bag strolled slowly down the pedestrian street.

Once under the awning, she glanced at the red light and looked displeased. Looking left and right again, she saw it was a red light for going straight and a green light for turning left, and the traffic wasn't heavy. Without thinking, she lowered her head and stepped onto the crosswalk, heading towards the other side of the road.

"Hey! Red light!"

Qian Wei quickly stepped forward to stop him.

"none of your business?"

The old lady rolled her eyes and swung her arm, breaking free of Qian Wei's hand.

She slapped Qian Wei hard, leaving his hand red. Qian Wei recoiled in pain, but this slowed him, allowing the old woman to walk onto the main road.

"Really...that old woman! Mimi, wait here for me."

Qian Wei shook his hand, turned back helplessly to remind Lin Ge, and then quickly turned back to continue stopping the old man. But in that turn, he missed two seconds.

A Meituan delivery electric scooter was making a U-turn. The driver, wearing a helmet, made a wide arc as he glanced at his phone on the handlebars, completely unaware of the potential accident that might be happening.

He was horrified when he spotted the old woman.

Fortunately, he was a skilled driver and reacted quickly. The electric scooter swerved to the left and right twice, but he quickly regained his balance and passed right in front of the old lady.

"Ouch!"

To the astonishment of Qian Wei and the passersby, the old woman's leg buckled and she sat down on the ground, spilling all the potatoes and peppers from the bag.

She sat there clutching her leg and screaming, startling the delivery driver who turned around and slammed on the brakes, skidding more than ten meters away. The black sedan following behind, making a U-turn, also stopped quickly, blocked by the elderly woman and scattered vegetables.

"Did you hit someone?"

"I don't think so. I didn't see the car hit her."

"Then how did she collapse?"

Several pedestrians waiting at the red light were whispering among themselves, and Qian Wei quickly ran up to them.

"Old lady, are you okay?"

"Ouch, look at me, do I look alright? My leg... Seriously... You're such a lousy driver, can't you see anyone? Ouch... Are you blind? How can you drive like that?"

The old woman groaned and cursed, while the young deliveryman who followed Qian Wei looked helpless, as if he himself was not sure whether he had hit anyone.

To be fair, he wasn't riding slowly, and his eyes were definitely on his phone, which distracted him.

"I...I didn't bump into you! And...it's a red light, why did you come out?"

The young deliveryman could only stubbornly retort.

"Ouch! You didn't hit me, it was this old lady who hit you, right? Ouch, look at me, am I joking with you? You little rascal, is that how you ride a bike? Hiss... driving so fast, I think you're trying to kill someone!"

The old woman cried out in pain while energetically raising her head and cursing. Just then, the pedestrian light turned green, and people crossing the street gathered around to see what was going on. Some nosy people even started discussing and recounting what had happened.

An elderly man, also quite old, retorted without hesitation to the deliveryman: "How do you ride your bike? You hit someone and you're still making a scene here? Let me tell you, if anything happens to that old lady, you'll be in big trouble! Seriously, don't you have eyes? Hurry up and call an ambulance! Let me tell you, be more attentive and polite at the hospital. When the old lady's family arrives, apologize quickly and try to get their forgiveness and reduce the compensation."

"I...I didn't bump into her!" The young deliveryman was on the verge of tears, but the old lady was sitting and complaining of pain while he was standing and fine. People who didn't know the truth didn't hesitate to start blaming him.

To be fair, these days, there are countless accidents and red-light violations committed by food delivery drivers. Whether it's to earn more money or to save time, these delivery drivers' reputation in terms of traffic safety is indeed becoming increasingly negative.

"Alright! Everyone's gone from the main street!"

Seeing that the pedestrian light had turned red again and the vehicles going straight were completely blocked by onlookers, Qian Wei quickly waved his hand to persuade them to disperse.

Looking again at Lin Ge, who was squatting obediently in the sun on the middle safety island, he squatted down and said patiently, "Grandma, let's put everything else aside for now and go to the hospital for a check-up, okay? No matter who's right or wrong, your safety is the most important thing. And this young man, you shouldn't say anything either. Just finish the takeout and come with me to the hospital. As for the truth of the matter, there are cameras all around here. We can figure it out slowly later, okay?"

"I...I have no objection. Please wait a moment while I call my colleague to deliver the food for me. It's going to be late."

The young deliveryman smiled wryly and didn't dare to argue with Qian Wei. He just quickly walked to the safety island to make a phone call.

"Hey! Don't go!"

Surprisingly, the old lady wouldn't have it. She took two steps, then grabbed the deliveryman's trouser leg: "You're not leaving until this is cleared up! Don't think I don't know you'll back out and refuse to pay once we get to the hospital! Now, apologize to me first, admit what happened, and agree in front of the police that you'll cover all medical and examination fees before I go to the hospital with you! Otherwise, I'd rather die here than move!"

As she spoke, the old woman lay down on the ground, the sun-baked ground scorching her, but she still stubbornly lay there without moving, her withered hand still gripping the deliveryman's trouser leg.

Once this happened, the onlookers stopped and started discussing it amongst themselves.

The main road already had heavy traffic, and now one road was completely blocked, causing chaos at the intersection. Everyone was stuck in all directions, with horns blaring incessantly.

Qian Wei was hot and anxious, sweat beading on his forehead. But the old lady wouldn't let him touch her, and he didn't know if she was injured, so he didn't dare to forcibly pull her away.

The group continued their struggle, and some drivers stopped their cars to join in the fun, gradually forming a large crowd.

'Didi! '

Soon a traffic policeman rode up on a police car. He paused for a moment when he saw Qian Wei, and then quickly dispersed the passersby.

The elderly woman remained stubborn even when facing the traffic police, so the motorcycle police could only quickly clear the road and let the traffic bypass her to get the traffic flowing smoothly again.

Then another police motorcycle arrived. The driver recognized Qian Wei and got off to greet him, "Old Qian, what's going on? An old man was hit? Who's the driver? Why don't you go to the side to resolve this?"

"I didn't hit her!"

The young deliveryman, who had been constantly criticized, finally lost his temper and shouted angrily, "That old hag is just trying to scam me! She ran a red light, and I didn't even touch her! My car is right there, can you see any marks on it?!"

"Running a red light?"

The mounted police officer paused for a moment, then turned to look at Qian Wei, who nodded.

The experienced mounted police officer immediately understood what was going on. He nodded and waved his hand, saying, "Regardless of whose fault it was, the camera is right there. We'll review the video later to reconstruct the scene. Now, everyone leave! Ma'am, let me help you to that shady spot over there!"

"I'm not going! I won't leave until I pay compensation!"

The old woman remained stubborn; when a traffic policeman came to help her, she slapped him away.

"Ha ha……"

The mounted police officer chuckled in exasperation, squatted down, and pointed at the security camera, saying, "Old lady, the camera is right there, showing who's right and who's wrong! Compensation? Without a report from my traffic police department, let me tell you, you won't get a single penny if you keep begging like this!"

"Then run me over!"

The old lady wasn't weak at all; she simply lay down with her limbs spread wide in a starfish position and didn't move at all.

"Woooooooo..."

The ambulance finally arrived.

The old woman's eyes darted around, and she started yelling again, "Oh dear... my head hurts, my chest hurts! I'm suffocating, I can't breathe! Help... my head hurts so much, the police are treating people's lives like dirt..."
