Reborn Cat Sheriff
Chapter 339 Pet Cats and Stray Cats
Chapter 339 Pet Cats and Stray Cats
All the cats craned their necks curiously to look into the pet store.
Inside, the incredible giant cat was standing upright, clutching a strange object, and smashing it wildly against the terrifying cage.
That big cat was smashing so hard that the cage on the whole wall was shaking! It was terrifying!
The cats whispered amongst themselves, playfully licked each other's fur, and scuffled, quickly shifting their attention. Even though they were also worried about their companions in the cage, what could possibly go wrong now that the big cat had intervened?
Only Wales and Big Yellow, who were trapped in the room, were terrified, but dared not move and could only huddle together, trembling.
'Bang!'
With a muffled thud, the combination lock, though marked and intact, finally gave way to Lin Ge's violence. It was smashed off the iron cage and fell down along with the combination lock.
"Meow!"
The poor little Maine Coon noticed the cage creak open and scrambled out. The cage was on the fourth shelf, but it didn't care. If Lingo hadn't jumped up and caught it, it might have been seriously injured.
The little guy couldn't wait and plunged into the pile of cat food next to him, munching away greedily.
Ignoring its unfortunate state, Lingo continued to vandalize the other cages that still held cats.
The cats in the cage had already witnessed the Maine Coon's escape, and were no longer afraid of Ringo's actions. Even with the hammer swinging right in front of them, they merely struggled to their feet, ready to be released at any moment.
One cage, two cages... Lin Ge was panting heavily, but he finally managed to rescue all the cats.
Once all the cats were free, he dropped the hammer and plopped down, chuckling as he watched the dozen or so cats jostling and crowding around a pile of scattered cat food, desperately trying to stuff themselves with food.
"You idiot, don't eat so much! If you don't know your limits, you'll eat yourself to death!"
Lin Ge chuckled, then sneezed violently from the even stronger stench emanating from inside. He quickly scrambled out of the pet store and found a spot with fresh air to breathe deeply.
"Meow?"
The Welsh cat, having regained its composure, cautiously approached with elegant steps.
Lin Ge confirmed that the cat was male and ignored it. The real problem now was what to do with the other cats. He had just counted at least forty or fifty escaped from the pet store. Such a large number was impossible for most people to manage. And pet cats' survival skills in the wild were a hundred times worse than those of wild cats. Even disregarding their monetary value, just leaving them to roam freely would likely result in at best a third surviving.
Since we've rescued them, we can't just release them and leave them unattended; we need to find a proper way to care for them.
Unfortunately, the pet store didn't have a landline, and Lin Ge wasn't expecting to find a cell phone or anything like that. Now he could only wait until tomorrow morning and ask Nie Guoqiang or someone else for advice.
"Meow?"
Seeing that Ringo was ignoring it, the Welsh cat was a little sad. This guy was clearly a male cat, but he acted like a sissy, acting all cutesy. Seeing Ringo turn to the side and look at the sky outside, it couldn't help but stick its head over and let out a soft "slurp".
"Fuck!"
Lin Ge was so frightened that he jumped up.
The wet ears sent chills down Lin Ge's spine; he never dreamed he'd be licked by a male cat. Even more terrifying, this bastard cat suddenly seemed oblivious to his own folly, burying its head and continuing to rub against Lin Ge.
"Get out!"
Ringo slapped the Welsh cat away.
Seeing the other cats around him staring at him with fear, Lin Ge felt a mix of anger, rage, and amusement. Then, seeing the Welsh cat roll over, tuck its tail between its legs, and meow incessantly, looking as if to say, "Don't abandon me," Lin Ge felt a sharp pain in his teeth.
But because of the Welsh cat's act of surrender, the other cats quickly acknowledged Ringo's leadership and obediently bowed down to him.
"Hey! I really owe you guys!"
Lin Ge sighed and tossed the annoying Welsh cat aside. The stench was unbearable for a cat, so Lin Ge directed several of the larger cats to drag the bag of cat food that had spilled out of the room to the gap in the cupboard window.
I originally wanted to direct a few cats to clean up the feces and urine in the various cat cages, but there was nowhere to dispose of them even if I took them out, so I had to give up.
The only good news is that, although it's winter, the sports park's large stadium is providing decent shelter from the wind and snow. A group of cats huddled together, so even in the evening it wasn't too cold. Ringo, protected by the cats, felt no chill at all. The only problem was that damned Welsh cat, who relentlessly kept nudging him, refusing to give up despite Ringo's repeated beatings—it was incredibly annoying.
Halfway through, Lin Ge realized that the Welsh cat was a neutered male cat. Although he didn't know how it had gained the acceptance of these cats as a 'eunuch,' Lin Ge felt a little better than before.
Furthermore, Lin Ge discovered that the pet shop had even had its water and electricity cut off. He had originally been worried that the cats' drinking water outside might not be clean and planned to turn on the water pipes in the pet shop, but now he had to give up on that idea.
"So, who actually owns this shop? Is it because they can't come for some reason, or did they just abandon all these expensive cats? That's unlikely, these cats are worth a lot of money."
Lin Ge was very puzzled.
The next morning, when Lingo woke up, it was already broad daylight. Apart from the dozen or so weak and unwell cats, the rest of the cats were running around, playing and frolicking.
Little Maine had snuggled into Ringo's arms and was fast asleep. Even when Ringo woke him up, he was still curled up and chuckling.
It licked its little paws, then licked Lingo's paws twice. Lingo ignored it, frowning as it tried to recall Nie Guoqiang's number while trying to find a phone, which caused Welsh to let out a disgruntled cry from not far away.
"You're crazy! You're even jealous of kittens!"
Ringo rolled his eyes at Wales, but still pushed Little Maine away and stood up to stretch.
Today was a rare sunny day, but the thick fog in the air was quite annoying. Dew clung to my skin, and overnight, I felt damp from the tips of my fur to the roots. Lin Ge complained about the downsides of outdoor camping while curiously watching the seemingly indifferent cats.
Even the pet cats, who were previously pampered like greenhouse commodities, were now behaving more ruggedly than Lingo. They didn't complain about the humidity at all, but were overjoyed by their freedom, frolicking around energetically.
Whether stray or pet, the cats were getting along remarkably well. A long-haired Ragdoll rolled around on the dirty ground, while a yellow cat jumped around on its head. A Persian cat, unexpectedly intrigued by a tiny insect daring to emerge in the dead of winter, stared dumbfounded as a tabby cat swallowed it whole. After a satisfying crunch, green insect juice dribbled from the tabby's mouth, leaving the Persian cat speechless.
But it soon became interested and excitedly joined the search for insects.
Lin Ge was willing to bet that if he didn't find a suitable place for these pet cats to live soon, they would completely turn into feral cats in just three to five days. But given how delicate their bodies were, it would be very difficult for them to survive in the wild.
What's more, it's still the cold winter.
The few bags of cat food in the pet store, under the watchful eyes of so many cats, would barely last a week.
What should we do then, expect their delicate stomachs to enjoy the garbage can?
So Lin Ge felt he had to find an owner for these troublesome creatures. Or to put it another way, whether it was finding a pet shop owner or asking someone to help with adoption, pet cats ultimately couldn't live without humans.
Once all the cats left the pet store and there were no more new sources of pollution, the smell in the pet store became slightly more tolerable.
Lin Ge pulled the 20-kilogram bag of cat food, which was mostly ruined, out of the gap in the shop window. The bag still contained about half of the cat food, but it didn't pose much of a hindrance to his powerful bite.
Seeing the food, all the cats excitedly crowded around. The pet cats were hungry from the previous days, but the stray cats weren't stupid; they knew perfectly well which was tastier: cat food or garbage. Lin Ge ignored both stray and pet cats, scattering some food on the tiled floor in front of the pet shop, letting the creatures eagerly jostle and scramble for it. If any were too slow to grab any, he tossed a little further with his paw, trying to ensure every cat got a share.
Once each cat had eaten a few bites, Lin Ge, regardless of who ate more or less, simply closed the cat food bag again.
He didn't know when he'd find a way to house these guys, so he had to conserve the cat food. As long as they didn't starve, that was enough; trying to force them to eat their fill would only result in a beating.
"Meow!"
The Welsh cat eats very little; he waits until all the other cats have finished eating before searching around for scraps to lick up and eat.
Compared to it, the leader of the wild cats, Big Yellow, was much more shameless. Whenever Lingo scattered a handful of cat food, it would be the first to rush over, claim the best spot, and eat until its belly was round and full, completely satisfied.
Lin Ge didn't care about such things. Survival of the fittest! If they weren't lucky enough to find suitable foster homes, these pet cats would be left to roam the streets. Letting them experience the lesson of "if you don't fight, you'll go hungry" is a good thing for them.
"Ok!"
Lin Ge felt that he was really thinking too much about these bastards.
Seeing that Linge had stopped distributing food, the cats, whether full or not, obediently dispersed to do their own things. The fog had gradually dissipated, but even in the cold winter, few people passed by. So far, the unusual behavior of this pet shop and all the cats had gone unnoticed. The cats lazily sunbathed, rubbed against trees, sharpened their claws, dozed, and played, all displaying a carefree attitude, completely oblivious to the future.
This made Lin Ge feel very tired, but he couldn't just turn a blind eye and ignore it.
He found a cat that seemed relatively obedient and ordered it to guard the bag of cat food and not allow any other cats to approach. Lin Ge, ignoring that he hadn't eaten, grimaced and found a relatively deep patch of grass to relieve himself before planning to return to the Zhanghe Police Station for help.
"Mimi?"
As soon as I reached the roadside, I saw a familiar person.
Wearing a sports hoodie and sports glasses, Li Yiduo was walking towards the sports park with a giant model airplane in his hand when he and a cat met face to face.
"Ow!"
Lin Ge's face lit up with joy; finally, someone was ready to take on this troublesome matter.
He looked up and saw three other boys, roughly the same age, behind Li Yiduo. Each of them was dressed as if holding a large model airplane in their left hand and a large toolbox in their right. The colorful airplanes made Lin Ge very envious.
"Yiduo, is this the cat you mentioned before, the one from your police station?"
A chubby boy, wearing a thick down jacket that made him look like a ball, and with a sports scarf around his neck, looked Lin Ge up and down, then said to Li Yiduo, "I can't see anything special about him. Is he really as amazing as you say?"
"Do you want to give it a try?"
Lin Ge glanced sideways at the fat man who dared to look down on him.
Li Yiduo chuckled and said to his friend, "Hehe... Ye Ming, don't underestimate Mimi. Also, let me tell you, it can basically understand what we're saying. If you keep talking so recklessly, be careful of its revenge."
"Tsk! Still so petty."
Fatty Ye Ming clicked his tongue and turned to the tall guy next to him: "Ji Yao, don't you have a cat at home too? Tell me, how does this cat compare to yours?"
"I do not know."
Standing nearly two meters tall, Ji Yao speaks concisely with an indifferent expression: "For model airplanes, cats are the natural enemy. So I never have any contact with my cats at home, and I don't allow them to come near my studio. If you want to know which one is better, you'll have to ask my mom."
"Mama's boy!"
The last boy, Zhong Xianxian, looked younger than the other three. He still had the naivety of a college student, but his words were ruthless.
"In this respect, who dares to compare with you?"
Ji Yao wasn't angry. She just smiled, tucked the model airplane between her elbows, and then reached out her big hand to give Zhong Xianxian's head a good rub, turning his handsome hairstyle into a bird's nest.
The four boys started laughing and joking together.
Lin Ge realized they had come to the sports park early in the morning to test-fly their model airplanes. The four of them had designed, manufactured, painted, and fine-tuned their own high-end toys. They were neighbors and good friends, and their family backgrounds were similar. Their model airplanes were far superior to those in ordinary stores. Based on Zhong Xianxian's casual remark, Lin Ge estimated the cost to be between five and six figures.
He was a little moved.
A real flying model airplane! What boy wouldn't want to play with one? Even though he had turned into a cat, Lin Ge still had an urge to try it out.
However, he still remembered the important matter and quickly stopped Li Yiduo.
"Mimi?"
Li Yiduo was a little puzzled, as Mimi would never normally do such a nuisance.
"Does it want to fly? Hey! Do you think we should make something that can actually carry a cat and fly? How about a heavy bomber? Let the cat sit on it and drop bombs. That sounds more interesting than mechanical controls."
Ye Ming looked at the cat, then at the seemingly mediocre biplane in his hand, and was momentarily tempted.
"They must... need something from me, right?"
Li Yiduo was more familiar with Lin Ge and was also a policeman. Seeing Lin Ge's serious expression, he immediately guessed a possibility.
Lin Ge nodded in satisfaction, turned and walked towards the sports field, then turned back to signal Li Yiduo to follow.
"Let's go take a look! To be honest, it's a bit windy right now. We can play when the temperature rises a bit later."
Ji Yao shrugged.
The other two had no objections. Seeing that the cat was indeed squatting not far away waiting for them to come over, they smiled and walked towards Lin Ge.
then……
When they saw the countless cats near the grass, all four of them, including Li Yiduo, were terrified.
They weren't unfamiliar with stray cats, nor were they unfamiliar with cats gathering together. But the sheer surprise of seeing at least fifty or sixty cats of various kinds huddled together, vaguely resembling a cat army, left them speechless.
When they see strangers approaching, most cats get scared and try to run away. Some silly pet cats just stay where they are, blocking the escape route and causing them to collide.
The scene was a bit chaotic, so Lin Ge quickly yelled "Awooo!" to order the guys to calm down.
To Li Yiduo and his companions' astonishment, when Lin Ge called out, all the cats stopped running as if a pause button had been pressed. A few that had run quite far even glanced at Lin Ge and then at Li Yiduo and his group, hesitantly returning to the group.
Fifty or sixty cats huddled together, their more than one hundred round eyes silently watching Li Yiduo and his companions, making their hair stand on end and their bodies feel uneasy.
"Fuck!"
Zhong Xianxian couldn't help but exclaim in surprise.
"Gulu..."
Ye Ming swallowed hard, feeling utterly horrified by the scene.
"Ha ha……"
Even the usually composed Ji Yao chuckled twice.
"What's happening here?"
Seeing Lin Ge arrogantly and lazily walk to the front of the cat group and turn around to stare at him, Li Yiduo was surprised and confused, but he was the calmest of the four.
Then, Lin Ge called out to Li Yiduo again and walked straight to the broken window of the pet shop inside.
Li Yiduo frowned as he followed, and the other three quickly followed him through the swarm of cats. When they arrived, the cats blocking their path parted to make way, but their eyes remained fixed on them.
Some of the bolder, foolish creatures even tried to rub against Li Yiduo and the other three, but were bumped aside by the Welsh cat.
