Reborn Cat Sheriff
Chapter 18 The Useless Cat
Chapter 18 The Useless Cat
"Oh, the cat's back?"
Hu Zhengping was the first to see Lin Ge. He breathed a sigh of relief, but his words were somewhat sarcastic.
"Don't say that. It was scared by the people on that boat. Anyway, I think there's definitely something wrong with that boat. Why would an ordinary person be so wary, even chasing away a passing tourist?"
Zhang Ke waved his hand, defending Lin Ge.
"You spoil this cat too much! Besides, it's its own place, what's wrong with not letting outsiders wander around?"
Hu Zhengping frowned and retorted.
He never really liked Ling Ge. In his eyes, what the police station needed was a proper police dog, not a troublesome creature that treated a cat like a dog and took advantage of it.
Incidentally, Hu Zhengping has a chubby and obedient Corgi at home. Compared to his beloved pet who wags its tail at the slightest call, this disobedient cat is a complete waste of food and has no redeeming qualities whatsoever.
His dog son can even help fetch slippers!
What can this cat do besides running around and causing trouble? As for catching the blond cat last time, it was probably just a lucky guess.
Seeing Lin Ge wiping his feet on the floor as he walked this way, Hu Zhengping uncomfortablely stepped aside.
Zhang Yong remained silent throughout, offering no comment on the dispute between Zhang Ke and Hu Zhengping.
He knew the cat's abilities and was prepared for it to be difficult to train. After all, even the police dogs in the station underwent long periods of training to acquire stable and reliable skills. The fact that Nie Guoqiang had taken a liking to this cat at least proved its potential. Besides, the station wasn't short of money for cat care; if the cat could catch another dead mouse in the future, the cost and effort wouldn't have been wasted.
"?"
The different expressions on the three people's faces puzzled Lin Ge.
He was unaware that these three men were talking about him, nor did he know that his importance in the eyes of these police officers varied. At the Zhanghe Police Station, only Nie Guoqiang truly trusted Lin Ge. Zhang Yong's attitude was more of a casual, opportunistic approach, while Zhang Ke mostly treated him like a pet cat. As for Hu Zhengping, who hadn't approached him at all, Lin Ge could smell his dog odor from afar.
Of course, Lingo himself doesn't care about these things. It would be terrible for a cat to have to consider human thoughts and the feelings of its owner.
Now that he had successfully found a clue, he had even less inclination to waste any more time arguing with this eyesore. What he needed to do now was to quickly retrieve the old-fashioned mobile phone he had hidden, hoping it would be fully charged, and then tell all the information he had found to the only person who trusted him and helped him conceal the secret of being able to communicate with others—Nie Guoqiang, the deputy director of Zhanghe Police Station and a recipient of the National Police First-Class Merit Award.
"Sir/Madam, your cat has been found!"
Zhang Yong suddenly spoke up.
Lin Ge was startled, then suddenly smelled an unfamiliar scent. A man with a flushed face, wearing a dark shirt haphazardly with not a single button undone, and flip-flops, swayed towards them.
Upon seeing Zhang Yong and Hu Zhengping, he showed surprise and even wariness, instantly sobering up considerably. However, upon hearing Zhang Yong's words and seeing a cat rubbing against the legs of a stylishly dressed young man, he secretly breathed a sigh of relief.
This change in expression naturally did not escape Zhang Yong's notice.
But he still pretended not to see it, and bowed to Zhang Ke, saying, "We'll be leaving now. Have a good time at Zhanghe. If you need anything else, feel free to contact us."
After saying this, he and Hu Zhengping turned around and got into the police car. They waved to Zhang Ke through the car window and left without stopping for a moment.
After the police car drove away, the shirtless man pursed his lips and sized up Zhang Ke as he walked away.
"Oh my god, Mimi, you really scared me to death! Luckily, the police in Zhanghe were diligent and found you, otherwise how would I explain this to Qianqian when I got back?"
Zhang Ke squatted down dramatically, patting Lin Ge's back, and said, "If you run around like this, how can I dare to take you out to play next time? Speaking of which, let's go back and find a pet store to give you a full check-up and deworming..."
As Zhang Ke was saying this, he tried to hug Lin Ge, but Lin Ge jumped away.
He wasn't angry, nor did he pay attention to the shirtless man walking past him. He continued, "I still need to send Qianqian a message to tell her that the baby has been found. Hehe... I'm going to be in trouble from now on. I'll have to watch my step for at least half a month."
"Turns out he's a simp! And a rich sissy at that."
The man named Iron Head sneered disdainfully, a slight urge stirring within him. But his exhaustion made him yawn again, shake his head, stretch, and sway as he staggered toward his own boat.
Seeing the man walk away out of the corner of his eye, Zhang Ke breathed a sigh of relief.
While admiring his own quick wit, he smiled and waved to Lin Ge, saying, "Let's go home, Mimi. This isn't your fault. Who would have thought we'd be disturbed? When we get back, I'll report the situation to Director Nie and have them investigate those people thoroughly." Lin Ge ignored Zhang Ke's words, his eyes fixed on the phone in his hand.
The latest pear variety is really expensive. With Zhang Ke's salary as an auxiliary police officer, it would take him at least three months of not eating or drinking to afford it.
"You want to play?"
Seeing the cat staring at his phone, Zhang Ke smiled and handed the phone to the cat.
Lin Ge was somewhat tempted and eager to try it out, even considering keeping it for himself. After all, smartphones were much more fun than feature phones and easier to pass the time.
But then he thought about how he'd have to unlock it and even verify his fingerprint, and he decided against all that trouble. Besides, even if Zhang Ke, the rich kid, didn't care about money, Lin Ge still had his pride; what kind of thing was it to steal someone's phone?
With a decisive turn, Lingo flicked its tail and walked toward the parking lot.
Zhang Ke quickly followed.
"He really is a cat lover, and he certainly comes from a wealthy family. He's actually willing to let his cat play with a phone that costs nearly ten thousand yuan."
The bearded man and Iron Head peeked out from a distance, and my wariness completely dissipated.
"I told you, there's absolutely no problem; you're just overthinking it!"
Iron Head yawned lazily, leaning against the iron railing, and said, "I knew I shouldn't have told you, so I wouldn't have wasted my time coming out with you. Look, this place has been open for over a month, and there hasn't been a single problem."
"It's never wrong to be careful. I've been feeling a bit uneasy all day, and I had a feeling that something was watching me."
The bearded man shook his head, his eyebrows still furrowed.
"Is it that cat you stepped on and killed that's causing trouble? That guy's win rate wasn't actually that low, but he just stepped on you to death because he made you lose a thousand dollars. If you ask me, the boss has been pretty good to you; he didn't even bother you after killing our God of Wealth."
Tie Tou's eyes were almost closed. After saying a few words in a carefree manner, he simply turned around and went into the cabin to catch up on sleep.
"..."
The bearded man remained silent for a moment, then pulled his jacket tighter around himself and followed him back.
Lin Ge turned back from a distance, his eyes inexplicably radiating coldness. He hadn't heard their conversation clearly due to the distance, but he was acutely aware of their reappearance.
Seeing that the two had really left, Lin Ge jumped up without hesitation and nimbly leaped onto Zhang Ke's shoulder.
Caught off guard, Zhang Ke felt a sudden weight on his shoulder and staggered two steps before finally regaining his balance.
Seeing Lin Ge stepping on his arm and staring at the phone in his palm, he didn't mind handing the phone over again. "What do you want to play? Catching mice or Fruit Ninja? Or wait a minute, I'll download a few games for you right now?"
Zhang Ke even instantly thought of several games that would interest cats, or rather, games that were suitable for cats to play.
Lin Ge ignored him, simply tapping the message bubble that appeared at the top of the screen to summon the WeChat group, and then precisely tapping on the voice call option.
"Hey, you can't move that!"
Zhang Ke quickly stopped him.
"Ow!"
It was too late. Lin Ge had already pressed the call button, yelled, released the phone, jumped off Zhang Ke's shoulder, and turned to leave without hesitation.
He knew that Nie Guoqiang would understand the meaning of that sound.
