Chapter 158: Brief Awakening
A faint white light appeared on the horizon, illuminating the vast, desolate land.

The sky was still somewhat overcast, and a cold wind was blowing, making it seem as if another heavy snowfall could occur at any moment.

The snow on the ground was exceptionally thick and did not melt, and all the water was frozen.

Early in the morning, the military doctor took Jiang Lanye's pulse to ensure that he was temporarily out of danger. He was relieved and then brewed a bowl of medicine for Song Yi.

Song Yi hadn't slept all night, and her once delicate face was now shrouded in countless wisps of fatigue.

She lowered the curtain, fed Jiang Lanye the medicine, and touched his body to make sure he wasn't burning up anymore. Only then did drowsiness finally overwhelm her. She lay down next to Jiang Lanye, covered herself with the blanket, and fell asleep in no time.

Half an hour later.

Jiang Lanye's pale face twitched slightly. His brows furrowed slightly, and his eyelashes trembled violently. After struggling for an unknown amount of time, he finally slowly opened his eyes.

He felt that all he could see was a white light and he couldn't see anything clearly. He squinted and adjusted his vision for a while before realizing that he was lying in a tent.

The tent was warm, with a charcoal fire burning constantly. The blankets were fluffy and soft, and his body was exceptionally dry. Apart from a lingering, faint pain in his abdomen, everything else was fine.

But he was clearly not in good spirits; his mind was foggy, and he felt like he was about to fall asleep at any moment.

Why is it so quiet around here? Is nobody here?

Just as he was thinking this, Song Yi's babbling suddenly rang in his ears.

The moment Jiang Lanye heard that familiar voice, he felt as if his heart had been filled with cotton, feeling soft, reassuring, and incredibly secure.

He didn't even have the strength to turn his head, so he slowly turned his face to stare at Song Yi.

She was sleeping soundly, her breathing long and even, but the dark circles under her eyes were particularly severe, and her hair was disheveled. It was clear that she had been busy for a long time, and she looked particularly bad.

Should we wake her up?

Jiang Lanye thought for a moment, but in the end he couldn't bear to wake her. He didn't mind his sore neck and just kept looking at Song Yi with his head tilted to the side.

Song Yi had another nightmare.

In the dream, Jiang Lanye did not wake up. His body was burning hotter and hotter. Song Yi tried desperately to cool him down. Later, when there was no water, she used snow water in an attempt to make Jiang Lanye better.

But he never woke up in the end. The military doctor didn't say a word, he just looked at her and shook his head regretfully.

She felt as if she had fallen into hell.

Song Yi had once thought that dying for love was the most incomprehensible thing in the world to her.

Your life is in your own hands. Why should a perfectly healthy person empty their soul for another person, and in the end, not even want to leave a physical body behind?

But now, she can't imagine what she would become if Jiang Lanye left her.

Not only was it unimaginable, but she dared not even imagine it.

Song Yi slept very restlessly. Although nothing was outwardly apparent, her heart was already in turmoil because of the nightmare.

I do not know how long it has been.

She finally struggled out of the nightmare, opened her eyes abruptly, and gasped for breath, still shaken.

Jiang Lanye was somewhat surprised and startled, and quickly asked, "What's wrong?"

Unexpectedly, he couldn't even utter a sound when he tried to speak.

My voice is so hoarse, and I really don't have the strength to make a sound.

But Song Yi did hear what he said.

Her gaze focused on Jiang Lanye's face, and she sat up abruptly.

Her voice went hoarse with excitement as she uttered the word "you."

The scene was somewhat comical.

The two people, unable to make a sound, just stared at each other on the bed.

Song Yi quickly cleared her throat, and this time she could make a sound.

"You're awake?! When did you wake up? Why didn't you wake me up?!"

She was so emotional that her eyes were red and her whole body was trembling.

Jiang Lanye finally realized that he seemed to have done something wrong. He blinked innocently and said with difficulty:
"I can't bear to wake you."

He spoke in a breathy, weak voice, as if he could stop breathing at any moment.

Suddenly, Song Yi grabbed his shirt collar, her whole body trembling. She forced out three words through gritted teeth: "Bastard."

Jiang Lanye wanted to comfort her, and he wanted to sit up right now and hold her tightly in his arms, but he couldn't do anything. Even maintaining his sanity and preventing himself from falling into a deep sleep was taking up most of his strength.

So, Jiang Lanye could only watch with mixed feelings as Song Yi forcefully clutched his clothes. She knelt on the bed, bent over, and leaned her upper body against Jiang Lanye, her forehead pressed tightly against his chest, letting out a painful whimper like a small animal.

"You bastard! I even dreamt that you died! I was so scared! You woke up and didn't tell me, you didn't wake me up, I was really scared to death!"

Jiang Lanye really wanted to laugh, but he couldn't because he realized that Song Yi was crying.

Tears welled up, and they must have tasted especially salty, but he had no chance to kiss away the tears on Song Yi's face.

He said casually, "I really don't know what you dreamed about."

"Shut up!"

She lay on top of Jiang Lanye and said fiercely.

Seeing that she seemed a little angry, Jiang Lanye quickly shut his mouth, at a loss for what to do.

"Yiyi, my beloved Yiyi. Rise, let me see you, please?"

His voice was still weak, but he still managed to speak with difficulty, trying to comfort Song Yi.

Song Yi sobbed for a long time, her thin shoulders shaking constantly, fiercely wiping her tears and snot on his nightgown before finally raising her head.

Her eyes were wet, her eyelashes were all wet and stuck together, her eyeballs were particularly red, her nose was also red, and there were tear stains on her face.

Jiang Lanye looked at you carefully for a while, then said helplessly, "You're crying so hard. Let me kiss you, okay?"

Song Yi glared at him. "What are you thinking? I'm going to call them in."

After saying that, she was about to get up.

Jiang Lanye was now unable to stop her, and said in a moment of grievance, "I want to kiss you. Let me kiss you, just once."

The moment the curved blade pierced his abdomen, he thought he was going to die, and that he would never see Song Yi again.

So when he woke up and saw Song Yi sleeping next to him, his first reaction was that it all felt incredibly unreal.

He longed for intimate contact with Song Yi, skin to skin, only then could he feel at ease.

He was barely breathing, his voice barely audible, yet he still tried to kiss her.

Song Yi was at a loss for words and wanted to give him a good scolding.
