Chapter 60, Eight O'Clock: Clues

Iron Man, wearing the Mark 33 armor, flew outside the area shrouded by Mysterio. Once he entered Mysterio's illusionary zone, he would be unable to see what was inside and would have to slow down. However, if he slowed down, he would be attacked by anti-aircraft missiles—he was currently being locked onto by those missiles at any moment.

[WARNING: Orion III surface-to-air missiles are locking on. Evacuation maneuver recommended.]

“Damn it, those are missiles I designed!” Tony Stark gritted his teeth. Now he understood why those missiles could perfectly predict his flight path, and he also understood Mysterio’s meaningful words, “You know better than anyone else.”

"Hack the system, Jarvis."

[Hack attempt failed; an unknown programming language overlay was detected.]

"Then don't hack the launch program or rewrite the booster acceleration program. That piece of code is interlocked with other parts and cannot be overwritten independently!"

The Iron Man suit floated high in the air, while bad news came from Jarvis: the Spider-Man suit's communication function had been disrupted by an electromagnetic pulse.

"Captain? Be careful, their drones carry EMPs. If you get hit, you'll be blind." Tony felt a surge of frustration. "Is there no way to track the signal source of these projectors, Jarvis?"

At the current distance, the interfering power source cannot be ruled out.

Meanwhile, the captain, who had received the message, put on his goggles, took the elevator to the ground floor, replied "Understood," and then shook his head upon seeing the scene that appeared after the elevator doors opened.

"What's wrong, Steve?"

Before me was the officers' club in 1945, a phonograph playing "Moonlit Harbor," and Peggy Carter, wearing that familiar burgundy evening suit, turned around. The pulse waves from the sonar system outlined the real scene on the eyepiece: twelve drones fanned out around, and three LMD mechanized soldiers were changing magazines.

"It's nothing, I'll take care of it right away, Peggy."
-
Mysterio's main focus was on dealing with Spider-Man—the Avengers couldn't send many people, and anyone with a brain would know not to send Hulk. Captain America was, after all, just a mortal, and as for Iron Man, Otto and his anti-aircraft missiles could handle that.

Ant-Man and the Wasp haven't arrived yet, but Mysterio has prepared a way to deal with them. Only Spider-Man, and only Spider-Man, can do it.

Mysterio waved his hand, and the ground beneath Spider-Man vanished instantly, disappearing hundreds of meters away. Then, an entire building collapsed towards Spider-Man, sending countless rubble flying towards him. Spider-Man began to dodge, as the debris continued to approach him.

His fist slammed into his own face, but of course, he missed. Mysterio teleported hundreds of meters away, while Spider-Man passed through the illusory building and swung his fists at Mysterio.

"Why aren't you saying anything, Spider-Man? Where's your sarcasm, your mockery? You won't even try to persuade me not to do bad things?"

Mysterio stood on the outside of the high-rise building's wall. Spider-Man slammed his fist down beside him, and then the entire building began to twist. Accompanied by eerie sounds and the cramped surroundings, the space around Spider-Man was gradually squeezed. At the same time, Mysterio heard Otto's reply in the communication.

“He has some kind of… sixth sense. I’m not quite sure how his senses work, but there’s no doubt that he can evade your illusions to some extent.”

Even amidst the tangled and compressed building, Spider-Man showed no reaction. Mysterio's abilities are primarily focused on vision, using drones to influence hearing and smell. Peter's senses, however, do grant him the ability to distinguish between visual and auditory discrepancies. Combined with his spider-sense, this allows him to largely avoid danger.

It must be said that the visual impact of Mysterio was truly outstanding—the swirling floors enveloped him layer by layer, and the simulated wind pressure from the drones made him feel as if something was really rushing towards him through his suit. Just as he was about to be crushed, the entire twisted building shattered like glass, turning everything around into pure darkness. Then, the enormous Mysterio slowly emerged from the darkness, cupping the surrounding air in his hands, and a real sense of weightlessness inexplicably appeared.

Spider-Man remained silent, leaping and bounding about, making all sorts of strange movements, and destroying the drones or the occasional LMD.

Peter rolled on the ground before nonchalantly standing up, only after the enormous Mysterio slammed a snow globe containing Spider-Man onto the ground.

Why are you silent, Spider-Man?

“Uh, I wasn’t silent. I was just thinking about how I wrote that.” Peter finally spoke, ignoring why he had suddenly appeared on the edge of the broken building, and looked at the mysterious figure floating in front of him, who was probably not his original self: “What do you think of my writing that I wrote?”

"What word—"

He didn't finish speaking because Spider-Man seemed to be dragged away by something in one breath, waving his hand and quickly leaving in front of him, leaving Mysterio looking around in confusion: What happened?
Peter, who had been dragged away, bumped into what appeared to be a wall, and his back naturally started to hurt again. But what he heard was a voice that was not so familiar, yet one that he desperately wanted to hear at that moment.

“How can you be sure I can understand that your movement trajectory is writing?” Cindy said, pulling him up higher. Peter didn’t know where she was going, but he answered Cindy’s question without caring: “Because you are an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., I believe you at least have this much ability, and I believe you are willing to help me with this small favor.”

"...Why?" "Well, it was just a small favor."

After Cindy dragged him into a room, she closed the window and drew the curtains. The illusion vanished instantly. It was an apartment bedroom of unknown location, containing a computer. Peter looked at Cindy; she wasn't wearing her web suit, but instead had a web strapped to her waist—presumably to prevent him from getting lost in Mysterio's environment.

"good idea."

Peter removed his mask, took out a data cable, connected it to the computer, and began restarting his suit. He also reconnected to the Avengers' communication channel. Tony seemed quite happy to see him reconnect: "Hey, Pajama Baby, how's it going?"

“We have to find Quentin Baker’s real location, otherwise there’s no way to escape except by bombarding the entire Manhattan with an EMP. Captain America is trapped in the lobby of Avengers Tower.” Tony reported some bad news: “I’m dealing with Mysterio’s anti-aircraft missiles. Just give me two more minutes, no, one minute. Hank, how about you over there?”

“Jarvis can’t analyze the source of the information, at least not in the short term. Mysterio’s signal comes from almost the entire Manhattan, making it impossible to trace.” Ant-Man conveyed the conclusion he drew from the data Tony scanned: “But the range of a single projector is only 500 meters, so there must be a signal source.”

“Perhaps Mysterio doesn’t control the projector with a signal source.” Peter suddenly realized something and realized, “If he wants to create illusions all over Manhattan anytime, anywhere, it means he not only needs to process all kinds of information in Manhattan at all times, but also needs to create precise models, see all the images intuitively, and receive real-time feedback. This means he must be able to see every corner of Manhattan at the same time—or his perspective must be able to cover every corner of Manhattan. Guys, have you ever heard of a brainwave device?”

"Xavier's Genius Academy's brainwave device—that thing is damaged and sealed away, their academy isn't in Manhattan, and it's not for ordinary humans—"

Tony Stark realized something halfway through his sentence.

A bio-ability enhancement device for ordinary humans—there's only one company in Manhattan that might research this: Osborn Technologies.

Peter grabbed his hood, confirmed the reboot, unplugged the data cable, and prepared to leave, but Tony interrupted him: "Even if you knew, kid, how are you going to get to the Osborne Building? Mysterio's drones will send you lost once they launch an EMP."

“I am a friendly neighbor of New York, Mr. Stark. I know every building in New York. At times like this, I don’t need to believe what I see, I just need to believe my actions.”

After listening to their discussion, Cindy asked Peter a question.

You don't seem very happy.

"?"

“I know how much time you’ve spent as Spider-Man, to the point that you’ve basically ruined the balance between the person behind the mask and your life as Spider-Man. But judging from the way you were just now, it seems like you’re not doing Spider-Man because you like it. You’re not like Tony Stark, carrying some kind of past. Why are you so invested?”

Peter was about to say something, but then he suddenly realized something, laughed, and looked Cindy up.

"...What are you looking at?"

“You told me how to defeat Mysterio, Cindy,” Peter explained with a smile. “You’ve given me both methods. Oh, and your question—the answer is, I’m not Batman.”

"?"

"There is no such thing as balancing the identities of Spider-Man and Peter Parker. Peter Parker is Spider-Man. There has never been a Spider-Man wearing the mask of Peter Parker, or vice versa."

As Peter spoke, he put on the hood, opened the window, looked at the pitch-black world outside, and finally confirmed the location information he had just determined from the computer.

Trust your actions, not your eyes.

"See you later."

Peter waved to Cindy in her ear and leaped down. Cindy then realized that Peter had given an irrelevant answer.

But he has already answered this question.

After all, for someone with his abilities, these were just simple tasks.
