Chapter 94 Lava Falls
"Professor Watson, what do you need us to do now?"

Upon hearing the question, Watson and Payton exchanged glances, then spoke with a hint of apology.

"Then I'll trouble you, Captain, to arrange for some soldiers to assist my two colleagues. They need to do some preliminary collection work in the surrounding area."

The soldiers had no reason to refuse this perfectly reasonable request.

The special forces team leader directly selected several idle soldiers and had them follow the two researchers.

Watching the two Minions, protected by the soldiers, they walked in different directions.

The captain looked at the man who had stayed behind, pulling out a long sheet of paper and flipping through it, without saying a word for a long time.

After waiting for a few minutes, I couldn't help but ask.

"Professor Watson, is there anything else planned?"

Watson, who was looking at the list in his hand, was a little stunned when he heard the soldier's serious questioning.

After realizing what had happened, he gave an awkward laugh, then straightened his expression and put the action form that had been prepared in advance back to the beginning.

After browsing and pondering for a moment, he looked up and asked the captain of the soldiers in front of him.

"According to procedure, the first step is to scout the surrounding environment. You've come in first, have you found anything?"

Upon hearing his question, the muscular special forces captain stroked his large beard and pondered for a moment.

"To the northwest, there is a huge cave that slopes downwards into the ground. And to the north of the portal is a cliff. The cliff is very deep, and what lies below looks somewhat like a volcano or lava."

Towards the end, the bearded man also became somewhat uncertain.

"But we didn't feel any particularly strong heat. We tried throwing stones, but they were too far away to see any change."

Upon hearing this introduction, Watson's eyes flickered.

He recalled the columnar structure, radiating light, that had been captured in the robot's camera footage, stretching from the dome down to the bottom of the cliff.

It seems to be the direction the other party mentioned.

"Have you seen a glowing object that stretches from the sky all the way down the cliff? It must be very large and conspicuous."

Hearing the chief professor's question, the bearded captain was somewhat puzzled, but he still answered him.

"Yes, there is. But it's quite far away. Isn't that a lava waterfall flowing down from above? There are all of these below the cliff, at least the colors look somewhat similar."

“I once encountered a volcanic eruption during a mission in the military, and the lava that flowed out was this color.”

The content of his words made Watson, who was wearing protective clothing, somewhat suspicious.

The bearded captain, being a soldier, might not understand, or perhaps he didn't think anything of it.

However, if magma can form a continuously flowing lake in the air, then the temperature within that space must be an extremely terrifying value.

However, Watson did not immediately deny what the other party said.

After all, ever since he came into contact with this portal, there have been too many things that don't fit his scientific understanding.

Upon entering this eerie space, one should be open to exploring everything, rather than relying on one's own experience to determine the outcome.

With that in mind, Professor Watson immediately made the arrangements.

"Now that you've reached the edge of the cliff, there shouldn't be any danger there. Would you mind taking me there to record and observe?"

The bearded captain didn't object to the request.

After all, their purpose in coming here was to cooperate and assist, and besides, the place wasn't far away.

Immediately, he called over a few team members and took the lead, stepping over the pile of rocks and heading towards the back of the purplish-black teleportation portal.

Wearing an orange protective suit, Watson followed.

The path leading to the cliff has a slight incline, but fortunately it doesn't hinder walking.

After walking for about several tens of seconds, and about a hundred meters from where they initially entered the portal, the gentle slope suddenly came to an end.

Even Professor Watson, an experienced researcher, was somewhat surprised when he first saw this cliff.

Unlike cliffs caused by ordinary geological changes, this cliff in front of us looks unusually neat.

There was no loose structure on the edge of the cliff, as if it were a man-made whole.

Just as he was observing, Payton and his companion, who had already completed their simple collection task, walked over under the protection of soldiers.

The bespectacled researcher, who had a relatively low profile among the three, was also quite impressed by the spectacular scene before him.

He casually pulled out the recording equipment that came with his gear, ready to record this scene.

But when he raised the camera and opened the lens, he found that there was only a jumble of static in the lens.

The faint, blurry image seemed to have an even stronger interference than the robot had experienced before.

It was as if it had been subjected to some kind of electromagnetic shielding.

This puzzled him, and he shook the camera, but there was still no improvement. Watson, who noticed this scene, also took out the video camera from his waist, turned it on, and found the same footage.

Seeing the two men's actions, the bearded captain spoke up to explain.

"Don't bother. It seems like any recording equipment will be interfered with here. Our team's walkie-talkies are also severely interfered with, but they're still barely usable. The cameras are completely useless; we can only see images with no signal."

Upon hearing these words, the two had no choice but to give up filming.

I couldn't help but lament that I hadn't brought an optical camera with stronger anti-interference capabilities.

It was here that I tried other methods to record the scene.

Dr. Peyton, the bravest of the three, went straight to the edge of the cliff, bent down, and peered over the flat, broken cliff face, trying to observe the scene below with his naked eye.

All I could see was a blinding, bright red.

Just as the bearded captain said, the cliff below is not only a few hundred meters high, but also an unprecedented lava lake.

Looking up, one can see a scene that the exploration robot could vaguely see from a distance before, but which is now much clearer as the distance increases.

It was indeed a thick waterfall of lava flowing from a hole in the rock face of the dome.

Although visibility was low due to dust in the air, and it was not possible to see very detailed information.

Even so, its magnificent scale still manages to leave a lasting impression.

However, Peyton, who had not achieved his goal, was clearly not willing to give up. He pushed forward twice more, trying to get a better view.

But just as he leaned his body forward a little more, he suddenly felt a sudden loss of weight.

The overly bulky and heavy protective suit head caused the protruding body to lose its balance, almost causing it to fall downwards.

But in that perilous moment, a black silhouette flashed past his eyes at the bottom of the cliff.

But the next moment, as he was about to fall, his body instinctively began to struggle.

Fortunately, one of the special forces members who was keeping a close eye on him noticed in time and went over to hold down his legs.

This saved it from plunging hundreds of meters down a cliff and being burned to death in the lava.

This unexpected event, which should have terrified a normal person, seemed to have no effect on Payton.

His wildly beating heart only pumped more excitement into him.

After realizing that his unbalanced body was being pinned down, he said thank you without turning his head, and then bent down even harder to try to look at the bottom of the cliff.

After trying for a long time without success, at an angle that would prevent me from falling, I could only see a dark corner, a structure similar to a city wall.

Having accomplished nothing, Payton had no choice but to give up, roll back down the cliff, and get up again with the help of soldiers.

He glanced, slightly out of breath, at Professor Watson, who was engrossed in a discussion with another researcher.

"Whoosh~ This cliff is a downward-facing, narrowing structure, making it difficult to see what's below from the top."

"But just as I was about to fall, I thought I saw some black things below, which looked like buildings."

At this moment, the two of them had already taken out paper and pen and started writing in their original recording mode. They were both stunned when they heard these words.

Professor Watson also walked to the edge of the cliff, stood on tiptoe and peered down, but the dizzying height quickly made him retreat.

"Dr. Payton, are you sure you saw a building at the bottom of the cliff?"

The question arose subconsciously, but I quickly realized the inappropriateness of my words and hurriedly corrected myself.

"However, at this height, our ropes would have a hard time reaching, and even if we combined multiple ropes into one, it would be too dangerous."

He muttered to himself, a principle that Payton naturally understood as well. He frowned, lost in thought.

We definitely need to find a way to go down and investigate.

The surrounding space looked vast, even seemingly endless, but the area that allowed passage was very small.

The place where they entered through the portal looked like an isolated island floating in the middle of a lake.

It's the kind of place with one cliff face and three walls that seem to reach straight into the sky.

Finally, after much difficulty, we spotted what appeared to be a building at the foot of the cliff, unlike the monotonous rocks and lava formations around us.

However, as he was thinking this, an idea suddenly popped into Payton's mind.

During the previous robot exploration, as mentioned by the special forces team leader, there is a cave that slopes downwards to the northwest.

Is it possible that this cave leads down to the bottom of the cliff?
After all, if the black silhouettes I see are really man-made structures, or built by some other intelligent life form, then...

There must be a convenient access route.

The only way for them to get to their location was through a cave leading underground.

Moreover, they entered through a black door frame, and the frame's dimensions didn't seem to be any shape that could naturally evolve.

Moreover, could the black door frame and the black building he saw be connected in some way, or perhaps they came from the same source?
