Chapter 89 Professor Watson
"How are things going with the soldiers who died in the last battle?"

MacArthur, who had been silently watching for a long time, suddenly uttered these words.

The adjutant who had been standing by his side was taken aback. But in the next moment, he quickly responded.

"Reporting to the general, the compensation for all the fallen soldiers has been paid out in full, and the entire process was supervised by the monitoring troops to ensure that no accidents will occur."

MacArthur, upon hearing these words, did not turn around but simply nodded slowly.

He then spoke again.

“Increase the pension amount to 1.2 times. If our amount is not enough, I will go and ask those old men in Congress for more.”

"But remember to keep this under wraps. The later the public finds out about these things, the greater the achievements will be later."

"You must do it well, understand?"

"Yes! I'll do it right away!"

Upon hearing the adjutant's reply, MacArthur simply waved his hand, signaling him to hurry up and get to it.
They then walked to a field laboratory that was clearly a makeshift setup, not far from the portal defense line.

As the sealed door was opened

A bustling scene came to mind.

There were men and women dressed in lab coats, busily moving between instruments and bottles.

Meanwhile, under a cutting machine in the corner,
The "flesh and blood rock" that the troops had collected near the portal was now placed under the saw blade of this large cutting machine and held in place by two metal clamps.

Just then, an experimenter started the machine, slowly pressing the rapidly spinning circular saw blade against the flesh and rock.

However, as the two came into contact, a large amount of sparks flew.

The operator gritted his teeth and pressed down desperately, but still couldn't make any progress.

Finally, with a "bang",
The entire cutting saw blade shattered with a crash, startling the researchers nearby.

However, the old man who had been standing and observing with a furrowed brow did not notice the gasps of surprise that were coming from the surrounding area.

Instead, he quickly took out a magnifying glass and carefully searched the cuts in the flesh and rock.

Other researchers nearby did not dare to approach and disturb them, and could only wait silently.

"Ugh--"

After studying it carefully for a moment, the old man put away the magnifying glass, straightened up, and sighed heavily.

"It still can't cause even the slightest damage. These substances have probably exceeded the limits of current global scientific research."

As he spoke, the old man casually tossed his messy, gray hair aside.

He seemed somewhat uneasy and irritable, but a barely perceptible fear lurked in his eyes.

If a substance cannot be destroyed or detected by current means, there may be many reasons, but none of them are things that humanity can tolerate at present.

And it was during this time of his melancholy about the future of humanity that...
A sudden sound of footsteps interrupted his thoughts.

"Professor Watson, how's the research going?"

Seeing that MacArthur had finished his research, MacArthur stepped forward and greeted him.

When Watson, with his full head of white hair, turned around and saw the man in military uniform, his expression showed no surprise.

He was led to a rest area set up for the researchers to talk, and sat down at a bench and a long table.

He took a glass of water from his assistant and handed it to the person opposite him, then grabbed another glass for himself and gulped it down in one go.

He then took a deep breath, raised his hand to rub his temples, and looked very troubled.

"Although the research data provided by the military previously had some inaccuracies, the general guesses were correct."

"All the unknown materials collected are indestructible, including that pitch-black door frame."

"A large amount of TNT was used in previous attempts to destroy it, but it did not cause any damage."

"Ugh--"

At this point, Professor Watson couldn't help but sigh deeply again, his gaze somewhat lost as he looked at the water in the paper cup in his hand, which was now rippling. He spoke again, but his tone was much lower and softer, as if talking to himself, or perhaps murmuring in his sleep.

"If you can't understand something no matter how hard you try, it means it's beyond your imagination."

"If you try to break something by picking up the hardest material you can find, but you can't even do that, then it proves that the gap between the two is unimaginably large."

After saying this, the confusion in Professor Watson's eyes subsided slightly.

He looked up and stared at MacArthur's eyes, hidden behind sunglasses, across the table.

"I really strongly advise against trying to explore that door. I have no idea what's behind it, but I can say with certainty that it's beyond our imagination. Destruction or rebirth are just two possibilities."

After saying this, his expression became somewhat dejected.

"Or rather, what kind of outcome we will face is perhaps no longer a choice for you, me, or even all of humanity."

"... "

"Perhaps it was destined the moment it appeared."

After saying that, Professor Watson looked through the glass window beside him at the teleportation portal that was protected by various safeguards in the distance.

Following his gaze, MacArthur also looked in that direction, but the emotions in their eyes were completely different.

If Watson felt lost and terrified because his scientific research over the course of most of his life was crushed, then MacArthur's feelings were characterized by calmness and unwavering determination without any ulterior motives.

MacArthur remained noncommittal regarding the rather discouraging remarks the other party had just made, neither agreeing nor disagreeing.

Only after the professor in front of her came to his senses did she slowly begin to speak.

"But you know those people up there won't give up. No matter the outcome, we have to finish today's work."

Listening to his calm words, Professor Watson clearly understood this principle as well.

Today's setback has deeply shaken his belief in science as the truth.

However, he was ultimately just an ordinary researcher, and such decision-making was not something an old man like him could interfere with.

He then stared blankly for a while, and feeling that it was about time, he got up and waved, as if calling someone.

"Sigh, you're right. All we need to do is get the job done. Whatever the consequences, we can only accept them."

Seeing his action, MacArthur also stood up.

Just then, following Watson's call, an old and thin figure staggered over.

After the group approached and greeted MacArthur, the highest-ranking officer, they arrived.

The latter's gaze was fixed on it, his expression somewhat strange.

“I remember you. You were Thomson’s chief researcher. I remember the file said you were injured and taken to the medical station. How did you end up here?”

As for his doubts.

Professor Watson, who had already adjusted his mindset, spoke up to explain.

“He made the request himself. I’ve worked with Payton before. He contacted me after he regained consciousness and asked to join my research team.”

At this point, Watson walked over, a smile on his face, patted the other person on the shoulder, and continued.

"The research information I gave you before was contributed by Payton. He has a very strong research talent in physics and military industry, and he will be of great help in our subsequent exploration work."

Upon hearing Watson's words, MacArthur took another good look at the gaunt figure in front of him.

He looks a bit younger than Watson.

His hair was thinning, and he was extremely thin overall, looking even thinner than in the file.

His face showed visible fatigue, but his eyes were unusually bright, radiating a fervent energy.

This stark contrast in his physical condition made MacArthur hesitate.

"Professor Watson, are you sure your companion is in good health? I feel his injuries aren't healing very well."
