Chapter 86 Assassination at the Market
Chapter 86 Assassination at the Market
Jorah knew that Eccles's visit to him was definitely not for good, and he felt annoyed. He said coldly, "I have already declared my allegiance to Khal Rahalo. I have no say in his affairs."
After saying that, Jorah turned and left.
"Commander-in-Chief of the Guards? Laharo has a big appetite!" Eccles' voice sounded again behind him.
Jorah paused. He knew what Rahalo was planning, but now that he could no longer squeeze into the center of power, this was the first time he heard of it.
"Thank you for caring so much about my Khaa." Jorah said sarcastically, without stopping.
"I'm not concerned about him, I'm concerned about you." Eccles shook his purse, making a crisp ding-dong sound. "Do you hear the call of the gold coins?"
"I'm not short of money."
"And the pardon?"
Jorah's heart beat violently, and he finally stopped, slowly turned around and stared at Eccles.
"I contacted Lord Varys, but unexpectedly, he gave me your name." A hint of teasing flashed in Eccles' eyes.
"If Rahalor becomes Lord Protector, you will be a traitor in the eyes of the Iron Throne. When Robert's host defeats Rahalor, you will be hanged on the gallows and dried in the sun."
Jorah narrowed his eyes. "Don't keep me in suspense. What do you want?"
A glint of pride flashed in Eccles' eyes as he continued, "It's very simple. I know you are an upright person, and I won't let you do anything unkind or unjust. I just need to relax a little when necessary.
You help me, I'll help you.
When this farce is over, you can return to Bear Island and inherit the earldom. You should be there, not guarding the barbarians."
Jorah was silent for a long time, and finally said, "Let me think about it."
The corners of Eccles' mouth curved slightly. "You are a wise man, Ser Jorah. I hope your answer will not disappoint me."
Jorah said no more and turned away into the night.
...
The Avenue of Pentos divides the city into two parts, the north is rich and the south is poor, but all goods, no matter how expensive or cheap, are gathered in the markets on both sides of the avenue, and various vendors and tourists crowd the streets.
Irri and Doreah helped Daenerys get out of the sedan. She wore silver jewelry on her head, a lavender silk miniskirt, and leather lace-up sandals on her feet. The straps disappeared from her ankles into her skirt. She looked like a princess from the Valyrian myth, attracting the attention of passers-by.
She ignored the gazes of passers-by, her nose twitched twice, and the smell brought back memories.
She remembered playing in the alleys of Tyrosh and Myr, when she could afford nothing.
"Sausages!" Daenerys took Rhaelor's arm and shouted in surprise like a little girl: "I want sausages!"
“I loved going to the fair when I was little.” She pointed to a stall where a small, stooped woman was roasting pork sausages and onions on a hot flint.
"Every time I smell this, my mouth waters, but I can't afford it. Today I want to eat three skewers!"
Rhaharo had a look of despair on his face, and was dragged forward by Daenerys like a puppet.
"You just ate last night and your mouth is watering..."
He whispered, but as soon as he said that, Daenerys twisted his kidneys hard.
"You mentioned the Red Door of Braavos where you lived as a child?" Rahalo decisively changed the subject.
"Yes, what's wrong?" Daenerys held a skewer of grilled sausages in each hand, her mouth stuffed full, and her speech was unclear.
"Do you want to buy her?" Rahalo raised an eyebrow. "We are very rich now."
A warm feeling rose in Daenerys' heart, and a smile appeared on the corner of her mouth, "Great!" "Khaleesi, look at the lace over there, it's so beautiful!" Doreah excitedly pointed to a slave on the side of the road, who was carrying heavy Myrish lace and dozens of colors of high-quality wool on his back.
"Khaleesi, let's go over there and take a look!" Jhiqui saw on the other side that a young and beautiful woman was selling gold jewelry from Lannisport, including rings, bracelets, and finely crafted medals that could be made into belts.
"What a sweet smell! There seems to be perfume for sale over there. Shall we go and smell it?" Ellie pointed in the third direction, her eyes full of curiosity.
Balbo and Zaco followed them closely, their hands on the hilts of their knives, constantly glancing around vigilantly.
Just then, Jorah Mormont appeared in the market place and was walking towards them. A strong hostility immediately appeared in the eyes of the two men.
Jorah avoided their death stares and stepped forward to salute Rhaelor and Daenerys.
"Khal, Khaleesi."
Daenerys smiled faintly. "Ser Jorah, are you here shopping as well?"
"Return to Khaleesi. I'm heading back to the Governor's Mansion."
Qiao La said respectfully, "Since we have met, there are many people here, I can protect your safety."
Laharo waved his hand nonchalantly and walked forward with Dany. "That's not necessary. Balbo and Zako are enough."
Jorah stood there, watching the group walk away.
Suddenly, several men wearing linen cloaks and hoods squeezed out of the crowd, with cold light flashing in their hands, and rushed towards Daenerys and Rhallor!
"Be careful, there is an assassin!" Balbo and Zaco shouted, drawing their scimitars and rushing forward.
Rahalo reacted amazingly, pulling Daenerys behind him. Then, he blocked the assassin's dagger with one knife, sparks flying, and then Balbo and Zako came up to deal with it.
"Leave him alive!" he ordered.
The battle broke out suddenly, and the crowd fled screaming like a flock of frightened ducks, and the whole market was in chaos.
Balbo's scimitar drew a cold arc of light, instantly cutting off the throat of an assassin, and blood gushed out.
Zako followed closely behind, grabbed the second assassin's wrist holding the dagger, raised the hilt, and smashed it into his face.
In just a few hits, the assassin's face exploded like a rotten tomato, with a teeth-grinding sound of bones cracking.
Balbo dodged the attack of the third assassin, went around behind him, and slashed his scimitar across his neck, leaving a thin line of blood.
The assassin didn't have time to scream before he collapsed to the ground, holding his throat. Blood gushed out, staining the ground red.
In a flash, an assassination attempt was averted. Although he was only a dozen meters away from Jorah, when he drew his sword and rushed over, the battle was over.
Three bodies fell to the ground, their deaths looking miserable. The surrounding vendors and passers-by were terrified by the scene, their eyes filled with fear.
Daenerys was still in shock, hiding in Rhaelor's arms, her chest heaving violently. Although this was not the first time she had encountered such a thing, she was still very scared.
Laharo gently stroked her back and whispered a few words of comfort. Then, his eyes fell on Balbo and Zako, and he spread his hands and asked teasingly, "Where are the survivors I wanted?"
Balbo wiped the blood off his face, grinned, and said, "Kao, they refuse to live."
Zako kicked the corpse and cursed, "These people are all dead men. Even if they are caught, they won't speak."
Laharo shrugged helplessly. The situation was unclear at the time, and they didn't know how many enemies were hiding in the dark. They were all experienced warriors and understood that they had to fight quickly and decisively, so it was impossible to use whips.
Jorah walked over, squatted down, carefully examined the assassin's body, and raised his head.
"Kao, I think I have a clue."
