Game of Thrones: Dawn of Justice

Chapter 6: Maester Amor, Valyrian

Chapter 6: Maester Amor, Valyrian
Garlon's face was reflected in the bronze mirror.

Her short, slightly curly black hair was a mess at the ends. Below her hairline, a pair of deep blue eyes, as clear as the deep waters of the Gulf of Tas, were rimmed with a faint tinge of light grey, like the sea shrouded in morning mist.

His skin was relatively fair, with a few tiny freckles dotting the sides of his nose, and his cheeks retained a soft blush from his youth. His eyebrows were long, his features were angular, his nose was straight, and his jawline was firm yet soft.

He was nearly five feet tall, much taller than other children his age, and with the clothes he wore and his handsome face, he looked exceptionally noble.

Garlon stared at himself in the mirror and sighed in his heart: This face is really worthy of the owner of the "Maid of Justice".

His hair was a different shade of black than Brienne's platinum, a color common to Lord Selwyn, and likely a color common to males of the Storm King's and Baratheon bloodlines. However, Garen and Brienne's eyes were the same color: a bright, pure blue.

After tidying up his clothes a bit, Garlon left the bedroom and walked downstairs to the first floor hall. At this time, the maids were already walking back and forth, carrying bread, sweet soup, bacon, cut fruits and other meals, and placing them on the long table.

"Master!"

When they saw Garlon coming down, they all stopped and bowed respectfully. However, Garlon also noticed that the way they looked at him was much brighter, more enthusiastic, and more respectful than usual. Clearly, the news of him finding the holy sword yesterday had spread throughout the castle.

Garen nodded at them, and then the butler Claude came over.

"Master, please eat first. The master went to Sapphire Town yesterday and hasn't come back yet. The young lady hasn't woken up yet."

"Did father go to Sapphire Town?"

Garlon was a little puzzled. Gem Town was very close and could be reached in half an incense stick of horseback riding. Why did Earl Selwyn still spend the night there?
Garen nodded, without thinking too much about it, and sat in his usual seat to enjoy his breakfast.

It’s called breakfast, but it’s actually quite rich, a bit like a hotel buffet.

There are three types of bread: one is a brown-gray hard bread similar to black bread, one is a milky white soft bread, and the other is an unknown bread that is slightly yellow and has a slightly sweet taste.

In addition, there are four other meats: bacon, sweet shrimp, ham slices, and chicken.

There are also sweet soups and fish soups sprinkled with black pepper to choose from.

Next to the main course, there are vegetables and fruits such as apple slices, peeled blood oranges, and roasted pumpkin cubes to relieve the greasiness.

Garlon enjoyed the meal very much.

Although the cooking techniques are a bit lacking and there are not many seasonings, the quality of the ingredients is good and it is still delicious.

After breakfast, Garen didn't wait for Brienne to wake up, and went to the third floor of the tower next door with ease.

This is where Scholar Amo lives. The roof of this tower is flat, and it is mainly used by Scholar Amo to raise ravens and deliver letters.

Although Maester Amo was still in good health, he was old after all, already sixty years old, so the maids would bring breakfast upstairs for Maester Amo to enjoy. When Garlon arrived, a maid in her thirties came out of the room carrying plates and dishes.

"Galon, you're here."

When Maester Yamo saw Garen, a smile appeared on his face and his eyes lit up.

Yesterday evening, he learned from Earl Selwyn and Clod that Garlon had found the holy sword "Maiden of Justice" in a cliff cave by the sea. He also observed this holy sword.

He was so excited about this that he almost didn't sleep all night last night.

Since the extinction of the Targaryen dragons, Westeros has seen no trace of supernatural powers for hundreds of years. The birth of the holy sword "Maiden of Justice" may be a strong signal.

As the guide of Garlon, the wielder of the Holy Sword, he has an indescribable sense of pride and mission.

"Good morning, Maester Yamo." Garen greeted with a smile.

Sitting on the chair opposite to the long table of Bachelor Yamo, Garlon began to wait for Bachelor Yamo's lecture today.

A maester held multiple roles within a noble estate, responsible for not only medical care and messenger services but also the education of the lord's children. Garlon had been taught by Maester Yamo since the age of three, and five years later, he had become accustomed to the scent of ink and parchment in this study.

The bachelor's collar on Maester Amo's chest is made up of more than ten metal rings, each made of different materials and colors. It hangs heavily on his gray robe, symbolizing his outstanding attainments in the Citadel.

From his collar hung rings of bronze, black iron, silver, and gold, representing his mastery of astronomy, history, medicine, and higher arithmetic. A rare platinum ring gleamed coldly, testifying to his mastery of the Valyrian language and ancient texts. At the end of the chain, a small copper ring swung slightly, indicating his knowledge of navigation and mapmaking.

This necklace is a testament to the scholar Yamo's erudition.

He has been working for the Tass family since he was thirty years old. Now, thirty years have passed. He is nearly sixty years old, with gray hair and fine lines at the corners of his eyes, but his eyes are still as bright as a torch.

"Galon, you just fell into the water yesterday, so you can have a good rest today." Bachelor Yamo said with a smile.

"No need, Maester Amo, I'm fine." Garen shook his head. He was a top student and a king of papers in his previous life. He didn't like wasting time. In the world of Game of Thrones, knowledge is equally important.

For example, communicating with dragons requires Valyrian. It would be difficult to control dragons if one spoke the common language of Westeros.

Hearing Garlon's words, Scholar Yamo was delighted and his eyes showed admiration.

Noble children generally preferred horseback riding, swordplay, archery, and hunting; few, especially boys, were interested in studying. Garlon, despite receiving martial arts training from Earl Selwyn from a young age, maintained a thirst for knowledge, which was truly commendable.

Now that Garlon has acquired the Holy Sword Maiden of Justice, perhaps he will become a hero like "Morning Light Garlon" in the future. Scholar Yamo has even higher expectations for Garlon's knowledge and character. Unexpectedly, Garlon has such awareness without his reminder.

"Very good, then let's consolidate the heraldry we taught you earlier. Let me test you." Maester Amo nodded and continued, "Where is the fiefdom of the Royce family in the valley? What is their family crest? What is their family motto?"

Garen thought for two seconds before speaking, "The Royce family's fiefdom is Runestone City, located north of Seagull Town, on the coast of the Narrow Sea. Their emblem is a pile of pebbles between two lines of runes on an orange background, and their family motto is 'We Remember.'"

Hearing Garlon fluently speak of the Royce family's fiefdom, coat of arms, and motto, Scholar Yamo nodded in satisfaction. However, before he could speak, Garlon's voice continued to ring out.

"The Royce family was founded during the Age of Heroes. They are one of the few noble families in the valley that inherited the blood of the ancestors. In ancient times, the king of the Royce family was known as the 'Bronze King.'"

"Their family once possessed the Valyrian heirloom sword, 'The Lament,' but it was lost during the Dance of the Dragons. However, their family still possesses several suits of ancestral bronze armor, engraved with magical charms that are said to protect the warriors within from harm."

Garen blurted out everything he remembered in one breath.

He even knew that soon John Royce would succeed his father as the head of the Royce family and be given the title of "Bronze John".

After Garlon finished speaking, he thought to himself that his memory seemed to have gotten a little better.

He can clearly recall the knowledge he learned and the things he experienced in his previous life, without any obstruction or forgetfulness.

After hearing Garlon's answer, Scholar Yamo's face was filled with admiration.

"What about House Velaryon?" Maester Armor asked again.

This time, Garlondo recalled and thought about the language.

"House Velaryon's fiefdom is on Tidemark. Their sigil is a silver seahorse on a sea-green field. Their motto is 'Old, True, and Brave.'"

"House Velaryon originated from the Valyrian Freehold. Like the Targaryens, their members often have the characteristics of Valyrian blood, such as silver hair and purple eyes. However, they are not the descendants of the Dragon King."

"House Velaryon had already settled on the low-lying and fertile Isle of Tidemark before the Targaryens migrated to Dragonstone. Tidemark holds their ancient High Seat, the Driftwood Throne. For centuries, they have been the Targaryens' oldest and closest allies. The position of Sea Lord in the Small Council is often held by the head of House Velaryon." Hearing Garon's detailed and concise summary of House Velaryon, Maester Armor nodded repeatedly. "Garon, it seems you have fully mastered heraldry. Let's begin our new course."

"New courses?"

There was a glimmer of anticipation in Garen's eyes.

"Yes, the history of Westeros nobility and heraldry are just the basics. Next, I will teach you some other knowledge that the nobility needs to master."

Scholar Yamo pondered for a moment, "But I haven't decided yet what to teach you first, so why don't you choose for yourself?"

Maester Amo smiled, dipped his quill in ink, and wrote a few lines on the parchment.

After finishing writing, Scholar Yamo pushed the parchment in front of Garlon. Garlon took a look and found that it read:

The Geography and Cartography of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros

Noble Rites and Laws of Inheritance

Medical and Herbal Knowledge

Garen thought about it and felt that geography was very important.

While noble etiquette and inheritance laws were important, there was no rush for them. After all, he was only eight years old, so it wouldn't be too late to learn them later.

There is no need to be proficient in medical and herbal knowledge, just a general understanding is enough.

"Master Yamo, I want to learn geography and cartography first."

Garen put the parchment down and looked up.

Scholar Yamo nodded. He had guessed that aristocratic etiquette, inheritance laws, medical herbs, etc. were too boring for children.

Geography is more interesting.

"Okay, then I will start teaching you geography today." Bachelor Amo smiled and took out a large scroll from under the table, intending to spread it out on the long table.

But at this time, Garlon said again: "Master Yamo, can I take another course?"

"Learn another subject? What?" Scholar Yamo stopped and asked curiously.

"Valyrian," Garen said.

"Valyrian?" Maester Amor was slightly surprised. He hadn't expected Garen to be interested in this.

Generally, only children of the Targaryen and Velaryon families learn Valyrian, and it is a compulsory course.

He didn't understand why Garen wanted to learn this.

In fact, Valyrian is of little use to the nobles of Westeros.

After all, only the Free Cities across the Narrow Sea use Valyrian.

"Yes, I often hear merchants from the Free Cities speaking Valyrian in Sapphire Harbor. I'm very curious about the continent of Essos and want to travel to the Free Cities one day, so I want to learn Valyrian."

Garen explained briefly.

That was one of his reasons, but the real reason was that he wanted to learn Valyrian so that he could ride a dragon in the future.

Of course, this reason must not be told out loud, otherwise even Scholar Amo would think he was a fool.

"Hmm... traveling to the Free Cities? That's a good idea." Maester Amor nodded, but said nothing. He had spent thirty years on the island of Tars, interacting with many merchants from Essos, even from the Summer Isles. He naturally knew that the Free Cities of Essos had a similarly prosperous economy and culture. Garlon's travels to the Free Cities would greatly broaden his horizons and enhance his knowledge, so he had no reason to dissuade him. As for safety, that wasn't his concern; he felt Earl Selwyn would handle it appropriately.

"Okay, then I will teach you together. But the course will be relatively compact, and you will need to spend more time studying with me." Bachelor Amo said with a smile.

"No problem." Garen agreed and nodded repeatedly.

Next, Maester Amor took Garlon to study the map of Westeros for a while. Garlon mastered it quickly. After all, he had seen more detailed electronic maps many times. He had even searched Baidu before watching the TV series and reading the novel.

Seeing that Garlon was learning very quickly, Maester Amor's face was full of smiles. He then took out a collection of Valyrian poetry and began to teach Garlon the Valyrian language and pronunciation using the poems in it.

To be honest, Garlon was still a little confused when looking at this collection of poems.

After all, which good person would start by using poetry to learn textbooks?

However, considering that this is a world similar to the Western Middle Ages after all, and there is no concept of dictionary, I can only bite the bullet and learn.

Fortunately, Bachelor Amo was very knowledgeable and his explanation was easy to understand. After listening for a while, he absorbed it.

After listening to the Valyrian explanation for about two incense sticks, Garen looked at his panel.

I found the skill column and the new skill of Valyrian did not appear.

He estimated that he would have to learn at least one percent of Valyrian before this language skill would be included in the panel.

Garlon was not in a hurry about this. After all, he didn't even understand how to obtain Judgment Points, and he couldn't add points. He just had to take it slow.

Just as the sun gradually rose higher in the sky and its light shone brighter and brighter through the window, casting deeper shadows, there was a knock on the door.

"Master Yamo, young master, the master is in the hall and asked me to come to you."

"Is father back?"

Garen looked back towards the door.

"Go ahead, Garen, that's all for today's class."

Maester Amo smiled and said.

He was very pleased with Garlon's intelligence and dedication.

Garen bowed slightly to Scholar Yamo, then walked out of the study and followed the maid to the hall of the Dusk Star Tower.

As he entered the hall, he saw Earl Selwyn coming towards him with a smile, a sword in his hand.

From the hilt of the sword, Garlon recognized that it was the holy sword "Maid of Justice" that he had drawn yesterday.

At this moment, the Maid of Justice was no longer wrapped in the simple leather sheath of yesterday, but was equipped with a gorgeous black scabbard.
