Chapter 57 Awakening
When Gu Yi's eyelids trembled, the smell of disinfectant first entered his nose. He opened his eyes and saw the cold white ceiling.
"I"

"Not dead, and not in heaven." A smiling female voice came from the left.

Gu Yi tilted his head to see sunlight filtering through the linen curtains, gilding the brunette with a shimmering golden glow. Vivian leaned against the windowsill, legs crossed. Her porcelain-white skin beneath her shorts almost melted into the snow-white sheets. Her slender fingers deftly peeled a tangerine, the peel twirling between her fingers like a spiral of orange ribbons.

"Senior sister?" Gu Yi squinted his eyes due to the bright light. "What are you doing?"

"There's nothing I can do. Caesar and Chu Zihang both need to attend classes, so I, a slacker with no classes, have to be your caregiver."

"How is Caesar?" Gu Yi asked hoarsely.

"He's full of energy. You should have seen it. He did a big thing yesterday!" Vivian pressed the water button on the bedside and handed the straw to the other person's lips.

"what?"

"He and Nono confessed their love, and it caused a huge uproar. Professor Manstein was so mad at him that his hair started growing out."

Gu Yi choked out half a mouthful of water: "Nono? Isn't that Chen Motong?"

"Nono is Chen Motong." Vivian grabbed a tissue and wiped the water stains on Gu Yi's face.

Gu Yi lay back down, feeling the coolness of the gel mattress beneath him: "Why is there no news from Finger?"

"He's in class too." The girl said a little embarrassedly, "We treated him too harshly during the welcome party. He should have had a good rest these days, but he can't skip that class."

"How's that evening?"

The girl was stunned. "I'm surprised you, a seriously injured person, still have the energy to think about cultural activities?"

"After all, I participated in the preparations."

"Don't worry, it's very successful. The firewall is especially successful. You can go to the Night Watch forum to check it out later." The girl chuckled.

"That's good. Can I get out of bed?" Gu Yi looked up and noticed the surroundings: there were several fruit baskets piled on the windowsill, many flowers piled against the wall, and even a special "Get Well Soon" banner hanging on the wall.

"what is this?"

"It was given to me by my classmates." Vivian pulled out her cell phone, and on the screen was a prayer post for him on the forum, which had more than two thousand replies.

"There's so much stuff, the vice-president has specially approved turning your ward into a display room for gifts." She shook a half-eaten orange. "You'll have to stay here for the next few days anyway, and you won't be able to finish all this food. Why don't I help you eat it?"

"Senior Sister, how many days have I been unconscious?"

"For over three days, I heard you overdrew your Word Spirit too much. Your deep coma is your body protecting you."

Gu Yi took a deep breath, feeling a slight pain in his chest: "I did overuse it that day."

Weiwei suddenly leaned forward, the shadow of her hair sweeping across Gu Yi's nose. "What on earth happened? Who could have pushed you two to that point?"

"Caesar didn't say anything?" Gu Yi looked at the ceiling.

"I didn't say anything, but..." The girl pouted and picked up her phone. The screen showed a post on the Night Watch forum, with a convertible sports car speeding by. "But everyone saw the video of you two racing in Chicago."

Gu Yi looked at his bloody face in the video: "Sorry, Senior Sister, I can't say it."

"Don't worry! It's just one unnecessary question." The girl stood up.

"I'll go call the doctor. By the way," she looked at Gu Yi, "I'll call your friends over for you." "Senior Sister." Gu Yi propped up her upper body, and the IV tube swayed behind her like a silver chain.

The girl looked back and saw Gu Yi looking at her seriously, "Thank you."

Vivian was stunned for half a second, then suddenly turned around and said, "Thank you, please treat me to a meal next time!"

After silence returned to the ward, Gu Yi sat up, pressing his aching chest. Memories of three days ago flooded back: the burning streets, the suspended blades, and the eerie blue flames of the Nameless Man's spontaneous combustion.

His mind was full of questions, and he knew that only one person could answer them.

His fingertips suddenly touched something cold. On the bedside table sat a peculiarly shaped flower basket, three silver knives wedged between violets and white roses. When Gu Yi pulled out the card pressed against the flower mud, his pupils suddenly constricted.

The plain white card had only a short sentence written in English: "To the dragon slayer - be careful of the snake head you cut off."

Chalk dust rustled onto the podium, and the old professor's hoarse voice sang like a dilapidated phonograph. Finkel's forehead slammed against the desk for the third time. The densely packed runes on the projection screen twisted into a hypnotic vortex. He could even hear the rustle of his eyelashes brushing against the textbook.

"History of Alchemy" was like a sleeping pill. Finger pinched his knuckles with his fingernails. He couldn't fall asleep. If he fell asleep completely, he would lose points.

Damn, this life is unbearable.

Finger shook his head. The dormitory had been eerily quiet these past few days! His paralyzed junior brother was a quiet man, so he was the only one who could deliver his stand-up comedy. He would often talk for ages without getting a single response. Sometimes he would get a response, but it would only be a nasal murmur or a simple "OK."

It was fine for him to live alone, but it was really uncomfortable to live like this with someone else. What's more, his cold-faced junior brother was extremely obsessed with cleanliness and couldn't tolerate even the slightest bit of sand in his eyes. He would always ask him to clean.

Gu Yi's novel was still open on his desk. He had tossed it there a few days ago when he left for class, but now it looked like a mocking tombstone.

I wanted to go see Gu Yi, but the most annoying thing was that even visiting him felt like a fucking pilgrimage! The corridor outside Gu Yi's ward was always filled with the sweet smell of flowers and fruits. Everyone except Vivian had to make an appointment to go in, and Finger was so angry that he had never been able to get an appointment successfully.

"Hey."

Suddenly, his elbow was poked by the tip of a pen. Finger turned to meet Su Yuqing's angry brows. The girl was like a ragdoll cat with its fur standing on end: "If you doze off again, you'll fail the course!"

"The Executive Bureau doesn't need historians anyway. Why does my schoolmate always act like an old woman?" He yawned.

Su Yuqing pricked him again, “Don’t call me old!”

Finger felt pained. "Schoolgirl, aren't you the teaching assistant? Why are you still here with me?"

"Because I have something to tell you," the girl suddenly leaned closer cunningly, "Gu Yi... just woke up!"

The desk shifted with a harsh friction sound, and Finkel stood up suddenly. The eyes of the entire classroom were like spotlights on him.

"Fingal?"

The old professor adjusted his glasses, his cloudy eyes slowly moving behind the lenses. "Did you have a nightmare? Do you need me to sing a requiem for you?"

Amidst the laughter, Su Yuqing was suddenly grabbed by the wrist. Finkel stepped out of his seat and said, "Report! Assistant Professor Su has suddenly developed acute gastroenteritis!"

"Me? Gastroenteritis?" The girl's cheeks turned red instantly. Before she could say anything, Finkel had already dragged her out of the classroom.
