Chapter 38 Extraordinary Guide

Chapter 38 Extraordinary Guide

Frederick watched the whole thing, during which he noticed the black coffin seemed to shake a few times, but after Julia threw in several vials of medicine, it stopped moving.

The others dared not slack off and continued to thicken the ice layer until Yulia ran out of the incendiary agent. Everyone was exhausted.

After discussing the matter with the church personnel, Director Mark decided to assign guards and ensure that at least one extraordinary individual was on duty. This did not include Julia, who was merely helping out; the cost of the medicines she used would be reimbursed by the law enforcement agency.

However, the Enforcement Bureau certainly won't lose out. After all, the [Silent Coffin] belongs to the Church of the Lord of Order, and they'll probably have to pay a price to get it back.

It was already late at night, and everyone dispersed, their minds heavy with worry. The residents of the western district also went home to rest after being notified.

Roland knew that the real storm was yet to come, and the situation would become even more complicated once the old priest's identity was revealed. Especially now, with the Empire's intention to revitalize the judicial system and strip the Church of its influence, it was a very sensitive time.

He pondered for a while, then realized it had little to do with him. He was still a nobody, and steady development was the key.

Freddy was on his way back, but not by running back on his own. Instead, he was riding in Julia's reindeer sleigh, being closely observed and teased by the two women. He pretended not to understand and played dumb.

Roland got up and started tidying up the house. He figured Yulia might come in, so it would be better to do a quick clean.

A few minutes later, there was a knock at the door. He deliberately waited a few seconds before going to open it. A reindeer sled was parked at the gate, and two people and a wolf were waiting there.

"All done?" he asked, feigning ignorance.

Yulia walked straight into the house, showing no formality whatsoever, her expression calm and revealing no emotion: "Everything's fine for now. Close the door, I have something to ask you."

“Okay.” Roland had expected this. Before closing the door, he glanced around and found that the bodies of the two old people were also gone. The gate to the neighboring yard was open and the lights were on, so there should be law enforcement officers on duty.

Back in the room, Yulia went to the bedside and checked on Evan and the others one by one.

"It's not a big problem, no need to wake them, they'll be fine after a good night's sleep." She sat down by the fireplace, took off her cloak, and looked tired.

The girl sat beside her, looking around curiously. Frederick lay dozing on the edge of Roland's bed, looking like a large wolfhound.

“Hmm. When will Grantham’s reinforcements arrive?” Roland asked.

“Tomorrow, or at the latest the day after,” Julia replied, looking up into Roland’s eyes. “Tell me, what’s the deal with the Black Wolf?”

“Adopted…” Roland looked at Julia’s tired expression and couldn’t continue the story. He was silent for a few seconds before speaking vaguely, “I can’t explain it clearly either. It must have been a kind of serendipitous encounter.”

In short, my body underwent some unknown changes during the brush with death. That's how Killy and Freddy came to be, and they also killed the people who kidnapped me; otherwise, my remains would have turned into animal dung.

"Are they spirit beings?"

"Correct."

"Could it be bloodline?" Yulia asked, puzzled and uncertain. After a long while, she raised her head with a serious expression. "Roland, the spirit world is full of dangers. Some creatures will even impersonate gods to deceive you. You... must be careful."

“I understand, I’m more afraid of death than anyone else.” Roland nodded with a smile.

“Go to the law enforcement office first thing tomorrow morning. Mark won’t dare to make things difficult for you. Then, come to the Rose Cross. You need to learn some basic knowledge now.” After saying that, Julia fastened her cloak, got up and went out.

"Thank you."

Roland saw her off, watching the reindeer-drawn carriage disappear into the distance, a smile spreading across his face. He desperately needed a guide; it didn't necessarily have to be someone to lead him into the extraordinary realm, just someone to help him understand the basics would be crucial.

'Yulia is quite nice.' He felt that the other party wasn't only doing this because of Grandma Mia.

Tonight was dangerous, disrupting his previous plans, but the gains were significant. He's not far from summoning his first piece, and he also received the old priest's legacy.

His dilemma was when to retrieve it. He was currently a figure of public scrutiny, a key target of law enforcement, and going to the cemetery at this time seemed somewhat illogical. However, going a few days later would probably be even more inappropriate; once the old priest's identity was exposed, his reputation would be ruined, and the cemetery caretaker's reaction would be unpredictable—embezzlement or a police report were both possibilities.

After much deliberation, he decided to observe the reaction of the law enforcement agency tomorrow before deciding when to go.

He'd been up all night and hadn't eaten dinner yet, so he roasted a few potatoes for a quick bite. After finishing, he took out his pocket watch and saw it was already 6 a.m. He knew he wouldn't be able to see the two "chosen ones" tonight and would have to wait until tomorrow night.

He entered the spirit world, placed Kili on the chessboard to rest, and gave it two spiritual lights to help it recover faster.

But he didn't stay in the spirit world. Instead, he returned to reality and went to sleep. Just as he had expected, the nightmare did not reappear, and he had a dreamless night.

…………

As the first rays of sunlight fell upon Ice River Town, Roland opened his eyes precisely on time.

In my past life, I had a job and an alarm clock, but I couldn't develop a regular routine. In this world without cell phones and computers, I can easily achieve it.

He dressed, added charcoal, boiled water, and washed himself. After all that, the four lazybones on the bed were still asleep.

"Get up, get up, get up..."

Removing the covers was too cruel, so Roland used his icy hands to lovingly caress each of them, finally waking them up.

"I overslept, oh no, charcoal won't sell well today..." Luke hurriedly dressed, his mind filled with thoughts of selling charcoal.

"I was so suffocated!" Targen pulled up his pants and ran to the bathroom.

"I'm so hungry, what should we eat tonight..." Andrew muttered as he sat up, looking up at the sunlight streaming through the window with a surprised expression. "Huh? It's dawn?"

Only Evan remained silent, glancing at the others and then at Roland, who wore a smile. His expression was complex, and his eyes held a hint of relief at surviving a disaster.

"Big brother?"

"It's alright, wash up and we'll go out for breakfast," Roland said, patting his head to comfort him.

Evan clearly hadn't completely forgotten what happened last night. He behaved very well before falling unconscious, and perhaps he had the talent to become an extraordinary being. He decided to nurture him properly.

The others were far less familiar with the events of last night; they had almost completely forgotten what happened. Only Targen vaguely remembered that a new neighbor had moved in.

Fifteen minutes later, Roland led the group of distressed people out for dinner. On the way, he briefly recounted what had happened the night before, which caused the group to gasp in surprise and look even more pained. Losing one's memory was not a pleasant experience.

Especially during meals, when others asked questions with great interest, the individuals involved could only give vague answers and showed no sense of participation.

"Evan, go and let Grandma Mia know you're safe, then go on with your work. I need to go to the law enforcement office; I probably won't be back by noon," Roland instructed after lunch.

"Yes……"

The group looked worried. Most of the law enforcement officers were outsiders, and their reputation hadn't been good in recent years. They were afraid that their leader would be wronged.

"Don't worry, I'm the local bigwig, and I have strong backing," Roland chuckled.

This is not just idle talk; even priests address Julia as "Madam," which speaks volumes about her status.
