Chapter 15 Escape 1
The next day, when he met Xiao Ran as promised, a hint of determination flashed in his eyes, and he whispered, "Follow me."
Without waiting for Su Wanqing's response, he turned and walked towards the back of the supermarket.
Lin Che looked at Su Wanqing hesitantly, who gritted her teeth and pulled him to follow.
The three of them walked through the narrow aisle between the shelves, avoiding the sight of the man in black.
The crowd in the supermarket noticed the abnormality of the man in black and began to commotion.
"Don't move!" A man in black pulled out a gun and fired a shot at the ceiling, "Cooperate with the inspection!"
The gunshots caused panic, and people screamed and ran away, with many falling to the ground in the jostle.
The chaos provided cover for the three people. Xiao Ran led them through the employee passage and to the back door of the supermarket.
"This way." Xiao Ran pushed open the fire door. "My car is over there."
Parked at the back of the parking lot was a dilapidated army green jeep that looked old but sturdy.
Xiao Ran opened the car door and motioned for the two to get in.
"Wait," Su Wanqing stopped Lin Che, "How can you be sure you're not leading us into a trap?"
"Do you have a choice?" Xiao Ran sneered, "They have a tracker and have locked onto this guy. If you don't leave now, you're all doomed."
Su Wanqing looked at the suppressor on Lin Che's wrist and frowned.
It was indeed a tracking device, and she had been using her jade bracelet to interfere with the signal, but doing so consumed too much energy.
"Ten seconds to decide." Xiao Ran started the engine. "Are you getting in the car?"
A chaotic sound of footsteps came from the supermarket, and the man in black had already chased to the back door.
Su Wanqing pushed Lin Che into the car and quickly got into the back seat.
"drive!"
The jeep suddenly rushed out, leaving two black marks on the ground due to its tires.
The man in black rushed out of the back door of the supermarket, saw the car driving away, and immediately raised his gun and started shooting.
The bullet struck the rear window, cracking the glass into a spiderweb pattern but not shattering it.
"Bulletproof glass." Xiao Ran smiled proudly and stepped on the accelerator. "Hold on tight."
The car drove through the alley, quickly shaking off the pursuers. Lin Che huddled in the seat, hugging his knees tightly.
He looked out the window and saw the supermarket gradually becoming a small dot in the distance, and he felt mixed emotions.
There was plenty of salt, but they didn't even get a box.
"Where are you going?" Su Wanqing asked calmly.
"Safe house." Xiao Ran glanced at her in the rearview mirror. "I hope you're not someone in a white coat."
"If I were from the research institute, I wouldn't have brought him out." Su Wanqing pointed at Lin Che. "How come you know the test subject's number so well?"
Xiao Ran was silent for a moment, his eyes fixed on the road ahead. The jeep drove out of the city and headed towards the suburbs.
The trees grew denser and the road became bumpier.
"My sister, X-7, left me a message before she was taken away."
Xiao Ran finally spoke, "She said that if she disappeared one day, she wanted me to find 0927. Only he could help me."
Lin Che suddenly looked up and stared at Xiao Ran in disbelief. "Impossible! I don't know X-7! I've only seen her once."
"Shut up," Xiao Ran said coldly, "The suppressor on your wrist is exactly the same as hers. You both come from Institute No. 7."
"Number 7. Research Institute?" Lin Che looked down at her wrist. "What is that place?"
"They didn't even let you know where you were." Xiao Ran's voice was filled with anger. "Do you remember how you became a test subject?"
Lin Che shook his head. His memory began when he woke up in the lab; everything before that seemed to have been erased with an eraser.
He only remembers the men in white coats saying he was "special" and needed to "contribute to the future of mankind."
"My sister's name is Xiao Yu," Xiao Ran continued, "and she disappeared on her way home from school two years ago.
The police said she might have run away, but I know she didn't. She left a sign saying 'Number 7' and '0927'."
The jeep drove into an abandoned industrial park, and the tall chimneys cast long shadows in the setting sun.
Xiao Ran stopped in front of a dilapidated warehouse and turned off the engine.
"arrive."
The three of them got out of the car. Xiao Ran looked around vigilantly and only opened the warehouse door after confirming that it was safe.
The inside was simple but tidy, with a camp bed, a few folding chairs, and a radio and monitor on the table.
The walls were covered with photos and maps, connected by red lines, like a case board in a detective movie. "Sit down," Xiao Ran pointed to a folding chair. "Don't touch anything."
Su Wanqing glanced at the photos on the wall, most of which were exterior scenes and personnel of the institute.
One of the photos labeled "X-7" caught her attention—a red-haired girl with cold eyes, wearing the same suppressor on her wrist as Lin Che.
"How long have you been investigating?" Su Wanqing asked.
"One year and three months." Xiao Ran took out a metal box and placed it on the table. "That's long enough."
He opened the box and inside was a sophisticated electronic device connected to several thin wires and probes.
When Lin Che saw that thing, he immediately took a few steps back, his face pale.
"What is that?" Su Wanqing stood in front of Lin Che.
"Unlocker." Xiao Ran looked at Lin Che's reaction and raised an eyebrow. "Are you scared? It seems you know what this is."
"Unlocking the suppressor will trigger the alarm," Lin Che said tremblingly, "They will find us immediately."
"The normal method will." Xiao Ran picked up the unlocker, "but this one won't. Believe me, I've studied it."
Su Wanqing looked at the device in Xiao Ran's hand, a thoughtful glint in her eyes.
Her jade bracelet could only temporarily interfere with the suppressor's signal but could not completely remove it.
If Xiao Ran's stuff is really effective
"How?" she asked.
"First, remove his suppressor," Xiao Ran pointed at Lin Che, "then he'll lead us to find X-7."
"I don't know where she is!" Lin Che was so anxious that she was about to cry. "I really don't know her!"
Xiao Ran ignored Lin Che's reaction and just walked towards him with the unlocker in his hand.
Lin Che subconsciously retreated until his back was against the wall, with no way to escape.
"Don't move." Xiao Ran grabbed Lin Che's wrist and pointed the unlocker's probe at the suppressor's port. "Bear with it, it might hurt."
Lin Che looked at Su Wanqing desperately, hoping that she could stop Xiao Ran.
But Su Wanqing just stood there coldly, as if waiting to see the result.
"You can't do this." Lin Che's voice was filled with tears. "They will kill me."
Xiao Ran pressed the button of the unlocker, and a burst of electricity was input into the suppressor from the probe.
Lin Che groaned in pain, and the suppressor on his wrist emitted a dazzling red light, followed by a series of hissing sounds.
Suddenly, the suppressor light turned from red to green and then went out.
"Done." Xiao Ran released Lin Che's wrist. "Now you can tell me where X-7 is."
Lin Che stared blankly at the ineffective suppressor on her wrist, unable to believe that it was removed so easily.
He touched the suppressor tentatively; no shock, no alarm, nothing.
"How is this possible?"
"Military technology." Xiao Ran put away the unlocker. "I served in the special forces for five years, so I know some tricks."
Su Wanqing walked over to Lin Che and checked the suppressor: "Is the signal completely cut off?"
"Yes." Xiao Ran nodded, "But to be on the safe side, let him take off the suppressor later."
Lin Che shook her head. "It can't be removed. The suppressor is directly connected to the nervous system. Forcibly removing it would kill you."
Xiao Ran and Su Wanqing exchanged a glance. The situation was more complicated than they had imagined.
If the inhibitor was truly connected to the nervous system, then Lin Che would be like carrying a time bomb with him.
"Now, let's talk about X-7." Xiao Ran grabbed Lin Che's shoulders. "Where is she?"
"I really don't know!" Lin Che blushed. "I've never spoken to her!"
"Liar!" Xiao Ran's eyes flashed red, and the muscles on his arms became unusually prominent. "My sister said in person that you can help her!"
"Stop." Su Wanqing pulled Xiao Ran away. "He won't lie. You can tell by the look on his face."
Xiao Ran took a deep breath and forcibly suppressed the power that was about to explode.
He turned and walked to the case board, pointing at the photo of X-7: "If you didn't know her, why did you recognize me at first sight?
My photo never appeared in the institute's archives."
Lin Che was stunned. Yeah, why did he know Xiao Ran's name?
The name just came out of his mouth naturally, as if... as if it was a deleted memory.
"I I don't know"
