Chapter 14 Mother is not at home
As the sky darkened, Gu Ping'an, who had been strolling around the village, came back triumphantly, followed by Gu Mei and Gu Laian, a brother and sister.

Gu Ping'an originally went to the riverside in the village to "spread" the message as his second sister said, but he didn't expect that someone actually knew where Gu Mei and her brother were.

After delivering the message, Gu Ping'an continued to stroll around the village, talking to everyone he saw. He waited until dark before going to look for Gu Mei and her brother.

When I got home, I saw that the east wing of the main hall was all lit with dim lights.

In the west wing, there was only light in the kitchen, and the other rooms were pitch black.

Gu Ping'an's heart skipped a beat. What happened to his second sister today? She was usually the first one to turn on the lights in the house.

The lights in other rooms are on today, why is my second sister's room still dark?
Gu Pingan went over and knocked on the door, calling out, "Second sister?"

Gu Tang was still sleeping. When she heard someone calling her, she thought it was a bit noisy, so she turned over and continued to sleep.

Gu Lianshan, who was in the kitchen, heard the noise and came out to take a look. Seeing that it was his daughter and son, he waved to them, "Don't disturb your second sister. She's sleepy and sleeping soundly. Come over to the kitchen."

Gu Ping'an walked over obediently.

Gu Mei took a step forward, but Gu Laian behind her grabbed the corner of her clothes and trembled: "Sister..."

"Don't be afraid." Gu Mei knew what he was afraid of and whispered to comfort him: "From the tone of Dad's voice, I know that Gu Tang, that damn girl, definitely didn't complain!"

That damn girl is so cunning! I finally caught them with something, there's no way she'd tell Dad like that.

If it were her, she would definitely make a lot of money first!
Gu Laian swallowed his saliva and reluctantly let Gu Mei take him into the kitchen.

The kitchen was filled with smoke, and Gu Lianshan was busy cooking.

After what happened today, Feng directly built a clay stove and started a fire in the main room.

Although the door was closed, the fragrance still wafted out.

The same goes for the main room, which also has a clay stove inside. The family closes the door and cooks directly inside.

Everyone hid food and cooked their own meals openly, but they deliberately left out the second family.

Seeing that it was getting dark and the stove in the kitchen was still cold, Gu Lianshan knocked on the door of the main room and asked Feng for food!

The Gu family's food was locked in the main room, and Feng held the key. There was nothing in the kitchen except half a tank of well water.

Gu Lianshan was not spoiled either. When he was hungry, he would ask for food and would make a fuss if he was not given food.

Feng was so angry that she wanted to die, but she didn't dare to scold him. She was afraid that she would wake up Gu Tang and cause trouble again.

In the end, I could only suppress my anger and get him food.

Because the Gu family had two scholars, the whole family had to eat millet porridge all year round.

Mrs. Feng was angry today and only gave two handfuls of millet flour.

Millet flour is made into a sticky paste, so you can add more water. Two handfuls of millet flour are barely enough to make a paste for the second room.

Gu Lianshan was not picky and would eat whatever was given to him. After all, the food at home was like that, so he couldn't choose even if he wanted to!
Taking out five bowls, Gu Lianshan prepared to start distributing the porridge.

Gu Pingan called out to him, "Dad, didn't you say that my second sister was sleeping? If you serve five bowls now, it will get cold."

"Dad knows, this isn't for your second sister, this is for your mother."

Gu Ping'an froze. Oh no, I forgot to tell Dad that Mom wasn't around...

Gu Mei glanced at him and spoke before him about Zhang's matter: "Mother is not here today. She said that the old woman from the Lin family is not well again and wants mother to go back to see her."

This sounds correct, but the tone is sarcastic.

Gu Ping'an turned around to look at her, only to see Gu Mei curling her lips in front of him with a look of disdain, obviously looking down on Zhang, her stepmother.

Gu Ping'an clenched his fists and stopped looking at Gu Mei. His face was tense and cold. Gu Lianshan was not blind, and he could clearly see the quarrel between his children.

They are not born of the same mother, so it’s good enough that they don’t fight every day. How can we expect them to be affectionate with each other?
"It's time to take a look." Gu Lianshan's expression remained unchanged.

After saying this, he glanced at Gu Mei and scolded her: "You are already a grown-up girl, so be careful with your tone of voice in the future. Look at you, you clearly have no bad intentions, but your mouth is so dumb that it can't speak! Anyone who hears this will want to stay away from you!"

Gu Mei's eyes instantly turned red and she looked like she was about to cry.

Gu Lianshan ignored her and put one of the bowls back in its place.

Two handfuls of millet flour were really not much. Gu Lianshan didn't dare add too much water for fear that it wouldn't be enough to satisfy his hunger.

Halfway through, there was still one and a half bowls left in the pot.

After all the food was served, there were four bowls, but only two were a little full, and the other two were both half full.

Before Gu Lianshan could share some of the extra two bowls, Gu Mei secretly reached out and pinched Gu Laian. The brother and sister both stepped forward to take away the two extra bowls, leaving two with only half a bowl of porridge.

Gu Lianshan's face immediately turned black, and he almost couldn't help but hit it with the wooden spoon in his hand!
They are all his kind, and he educates them equally. Why is there such a big difference?
After receiving the porridge, the brother and sister went straight out of the kitchen and planned to go back into the house to eat.

"Dad, I can't eat so much. I'll give you half." Seeing that his father looked unhappy, Gu Ping'an wanted to give him some of the porridge.

"No need! Dad had a good meal in Bei'an City today, so he's not very hungry. You can eat by yourself."

Gu Lianshan stopped his son and picked up his own bowl to drink.

Gu Ping'an also imitated his father and didn't even use chopsticks. He just held the bowl and drank it.

Gu Lianshan ate quickly and soon finished everything. He touched his stomach and found that he was not even three-quarters full.

She turned to look at her son, and after he finished eating, she whispered to him, "Your second sister bought a lot of food today. If you feel too hungry in the middle of the night, go ask your second sister for more."

Gu Ping'an nodded repeatedly.

After the father and son finished their meal, they didn’t even wash the pots and dishes. They just put them on the stove, closed the kitchen door, and went back to sleep.

……

Gu Tang slept so soundly that his bones felt soft!
She didn't wake up naturally until the rooster crowed.

Nowadays, the nights are long and the days are short. Although the roosters have been crowing for a long time, it is still pitch black outside.

I glanced at the time on the system panel. It was five in the morning and the highest temperature was only five degrees.

Gu Tang smacked his lips in surprise. "Has the temperature dropped?" It was 7 or 8 degrees yesterday, but only 5 today.

She was a little worried. The first winter she had traveled back to ancient times was approaching. How should she survive it?
There was no cotton in this dynasty, so there were no quilts to cover ourselves with in winter or cotton clothes to wear.

Rich families can use various animal furs, silk and other materials to make quilts and fur coats.

Ordinary people used collected reed flowers, willow catkins, as well as some needles, thread, hemp ropes, cloth pieces and other things they had saved to keep warm.

Sew a cover similar to a quilt, mash and soften things like reed fluff, stuff them in one by one and smooth them out, and finally sew the cover shut. It can barely be used as a quilt.

If it's still cold, put another layer of straw on top.

"Cotton-padded clothes" are similar to this. Winter clothes are all double-layered jackets, so that it is convenient to stuff things inside to keep warm.

These things are definitely not warm, so people here basically stay indoors in the winter.

Families with good fortune would build a fire pit in the house to keep warm, burning firewood day and night, which was much better than those "cotton-padded clothes" and "quilts".
