Chapter 156 The Blame
Looking at Emily pouring wine for Pam, Leon stared at this famous old drunkard in Stardew Valley and sighed.

After all, he was listening to what Pam said just now. She seemed to be buying wine on credit, and from the sound of her voice, it was not her first time.

And looking at Pam's flushed face, the two of them could smell the pungent smell of alcohol even though they were more than a meter away. Leon estimated that Pam had drunk quite a lot before this.

This made him think of Penny. After all, this drunkard was Penny's mother.

After Pam left with a full glass of beer, Leon asked, "How much did she owe for the drinks at the store?"

"I'm not sure either. Let me take a look. Um, it's 645G." Emily picked up a notebook behind the counter, flipped through it for a moment, and gave the answer.

"Gus just let her buy on credit?" Leon continued to ask.

"After all, he's an old customer, and you know Gus's character." Emily said with a helpless expression, as if she was very dissatisfied with Pam's use of Gus' kindness to satisfy her alcohol addiction.

"Then do you think it's possible for her to pay back her debt?" Leon glanced at Pam who was drinking alone in the corner. From her somewhat sloppy clothes, it was impossible to tell what kind of job Pam was doing.

"I think so. She used to be a driver on the bus from Pelican Town to Calico Desert. After the bus stopped running due to an accident, I heard that she would occasionally work as a loader at Joja Supermarket." Emily answered, recalling the conversation between Pam and Gus.

"Did her family come to pay for her wine?" Leon asked.

"You mean Penny? Of course, and more than once." Emily nodded. "And every time Penny came to pick her up when Pam was drunk."

Leon shook his head silently and said nothing more, while Emily glanced at Leon, not understanding why Leon suddenly cared about Pam's situation.

After a moment of silence, Leon spoke again: "Is Pam the only one in town who can drive a bus?"

"No, but Pam is the only one who lives in Pelican Town permanently," Emily explained.

"If I fix the bus to the Calico Desert, what do you think Lewis will do about the driver problem?"

"I don't know either." Emily shook her head. "Maybe they'll hire a driver? Or maybe Pam will continue to be in charge of the bus operations."

"I'll go talk to Lewis." Leon said, saying goodbye to Emily and found Lewis who was chatting with Marnie.

“Mani, you don’t mind borrowing Lewis for a while.”

As soon as he came in front of the two of them, Leon made a joke to Marnie and winked at Lewis.

"Of course, you guys chat." Mani was stunned for a moment after hearing this, then she covered her mouth and smiled, agreeing with Leon's statement, and then prepared to leave, but Lewis stood up first and pulled the two aside.

"what happened?"

"I have plans to repair the bus to the Calico Desert in the future. I have some questions for you about the selection of the driver." Lyon said to Lewis seriously.

"That's a good thing." Lewis was a little happy when he heard it. "As for the driver selection, I plan to listen to you. After all, it was you who repaired the bus."

"I'm not very familiar with the personnel affairs in Pelican Town. I just wanted to ask about your arrangements," Leon continued, glancing at Pam while Lewis looked at him. "Are you worried that I'll let Pam become a bus driver again? It seems you've heard about that incident." Lewis immediately understood what Leon meant and looked a little embarrassed.

"Leon, you may not know that Pam is the only one in Stardew Valley who has a bus driver's license, even though she is an alcoholic."

"So you are still inclined to Pam." Leon saw Lewis's expression and understood his thoughts.

"Yes, although Pam has a habit of drinking, she is very serious about her work and will never drink during working hours. The previous bus accident was not caused by Pam driving the bus while drunk as rumored in the town. Otherwise, according to the relevant laws and regulations of the Finkiel Republic, if she really did such a ridiculous thing, she would have been arrested and imprisoned long ago." Lewis explained.

"What's the specific reason? Could you please tell me?" Lyon asked.

"Well, that happened several years ago, but I still remember it vividly. Pam was working normally that day, and when he returned from the Calico Desert, there were only four passengers in the car, three of whom were residents of the town, and one was a tourist."

When Lewis talked about the tourist, his expression became a little complicated. "The problem lies with that tourist. He was a spy from the Gatlo Empire. He injected Pam with an anesthetic needle just as the bus was about to enter Stardew Valley, causing her to pass out. That's why the bus lost control and crashed into the tunnel."

"Spy? Why choose Pam?" Leon was stunned when he heard the news. After all, the plot development was a bit abrupt.

"Remember the library where all the antiquities and mineral exhibits were swept away?" Lewis reminded.

"So, the day the bus accident happened was exactly the day the previous library director fled?" Leon reacted immediately.

"Yes, Pam was the bait. Her bus had an accident near Stardew Valley. After we got the news, we immediately rushed a lot of young and strong people there, resulting in a shortage of manpower in Pelican Town. That gave the previous librarian an opportunity to escape Stardew Valley by boat with a large number of collections."

Lewis said this with a somewhat helpless expression: "When we found Pam, she was still unconscious. The rescuers mistakenly thought she was drunk, so some people spread the rumor that Pam was the cause of the accident due to drunk driving."

"Didn't she make any defense? Or was she given a gag order?" Leon asked.

"The latter. Because the Fingir Republic had not yet gone to war with the Gotlo Empire at that time, in order to avoid causing panic among the people, government agents specifically found Pam for a talk. I was there at the time and served as a witness and guarantor." Lewis sighed.

"Although the government offered compensation for the damage, it wasn't much. Pam couldn't refuse, and she didn't dare to refuse, so she had to bear the stigma until now. The residents of Stardew Valley owe her an apology and a job, so I still think it's best to hire her after the bus is repaired."

"I understand." Leon understood a lot of things in an instant, and his resistance to Pam almost disappeared.

“But since this is an official confidentiality agreement, Lewis, aren’t you worried about breaking the law when you tell me this?”

"This war is almost over. The Gotlo Empire's defenses are on the verge of collapse. They can only hold out until autumn or winter at most, after which they will have to surrender. Furthermore, the confidentiality agreement is about to expire."

Lewis gave a shocking piece of news, which surprised Leon. Why would the mayor of Pelican Town, which is far away from the war zone, know such information?

Seeing Leon's confusion, Lewis explained with a smile: "I have a good relationship with the governor, and Jody's husband is on the front line. I am the mayor of Pelican Town and a friend of Kent. I have the responsibility and obligation to care for my friend."

Regarding the addition of mod content, I am still considering it. There will be no results before at least 600,000 or 700,000 words. After all, I still have to experience it. I have downloaded a lot of additional content mods. I will choose some interesting ones and add them in a reasonable way.

As for this chapter, it can be regarded as a character supplement. I like Pam very much. After all, the gifts this guy gives are either batteries or tonics, which are all good things. The most important thing is that she has a daughter.
