Chapter 119, Langlands conception, perfunctory and imaginative! 2 Sacks of readers' letters!

Chapter 119: Langlands' conception, perfunctory and imaginative! Two sacks of reader letters!
Wang Duoyu smiled slightly, looked at Qiu Chengtong and shook his head slightly:

"Professor Qiu, thank you very much for your invitation. America is still too far away for me. I'm not used to living abroad, so I won't bother you anymore."

As soon as these words came out, the smile on Qiu Chengtong's face froze, and he blurted out in disbelief:

"why?"

That’s the United States, the most powerful country on the planet. How could anyone not want to go to the United States?

Previously, when Peking University President Zhou Peiyuan led a delegation to visit Stanford University and the University of California, Berkeley, Shing-Tung Yau met with other members of the delegation.

These people are very envious and also want to study in the United States.

During these days since returning to Beijing, when communicating with other scientific research units such as the Institute of Mathematics, Shing-Tung Yau has also seen envious eyes from many researchers, master's students, etc.

Qiu Chengtong knows that our country already has a study abroad program and the first batch of international students has already been sent out.

Many Chinese people are now eager to study abroad, and almost no one does not want to study abroad.

However, Qiu Chengtong never expected that Wang Duoyu was an exception. Without thinking too much, he directly refused.

Chen Shiing-Shen was also very surprised, but he was a 68-year-old man after all, and was used to the ups and downs of life. He just raised his eyebrows slightly, looked at Wang Duoyu in surprise, and his expression quickly returned to normal.

Tao Fangqi, Li Rui, Liu Deben, Wu Congqin and others were secretly delighted. Wang Duoyu did not disappoint them and was still very determined.

Tian Shouzhong's expression instantly became very interesting. He looked at Wang Duoyu in disbelief. The other party actually rejected Professor Shing-Tung Yau's invitation?
You have to know that this means studying abroad in America, the most developed country in the world. Who wouldn’t want to go?
Anyway, if Tian Shouzhong had such an opportunity, he would definitely not hesitate at all and would agree immediately. Unfortunately, he is an assistant researcher and does not have such an opportunity.

Wang Duoyu smiled and said, "Professor Qiu, I've already explained that I'm not used to living abroad, nor do I yearn for it. We Chinese have an old saying: 'A nest of gold or silver is not as good as your own doghouse.'"

After a pause, he continued:

"In fact, I really enjoy communicating with Professor Qiu and Professor Chen. You were also Chinese in the past. You are welcome to come back here often."

"Oh, right, we just talked about the Langlands concept. In my opinion, the idea of the cusp form comes from the cusp on the modular curve, which corresponds to the discrete spectrum in spectral theory. In contrast, the continuous spectrum comes from the Eisenstein series."

“But the larger a given Lie group is, the more parabolic subgroups there are, and the more technically complex it becomes.”

The best way to resolve the awkwardness is to change the topic directly. It was obvious that Qiu Chengtong was a little unwilling, but he listened carefully.

Not only him, but Tao Fangqi and others also listened attentively.

Seeing this, Chen Shiing-Shen sighed in his heart. Geniuses are indeed very proud, but he never expected that Wang Duoyu would be so arrogant.

The United States is the most developed country in the world. Not only that, there are mathematics centers like Princeton University there, but Wang Duoyu was not interested at all.

Glancing at Liu Deben, Wu Congqin and the others, Chen Shiing-Shen guessed that perhaps Wang Duoyu had been fooled by some teachers from Harbin Institute of Technology?
No, I have to find an opportunity to talk to Wang Duoyu alone.

In the evening, Wang Duoyu came to Wangfujing Street and met Zhu Ling.

When the latter learned that he had come, he was very happy and asked quickly:
"Didn't you say you wouldn't come to the capital for a while? Why are you here suddenly again?"

"Are you unhappy that I'm here? Are you afraid to see me? Or are you hiding something from me?"

"Who's afraid of seeing you? I'm just surprised. You said you're very busy, with several projects and a paper to write. Tsk, I don't know what you're busy with all day long. You're busier than my dad."

Zhu Ling's father is a professor at Beijing Institute of Technology, so of course he is not very idle.

Since the national college entrance examination was resumed at the end of last year, universities have resumed their previous enrollment, the number of students in schools has gradually increased, and professors and lecturers have become very busy.

Wang Duoyu smiled and briefly told Zhu Ling the purpose of his visit to Beijing.

After hearing this, she was immediately surprised, and looked at him with her beautiful eyes blinking:
"You mean the Chinese-American math professor who came back from the US specifically to see you? He even invited you to study in the US, and you turned him down?"

Seeing him nod, Zhu Ling immediately punched him lightly and complained coquettishly:

"You're so stupid! How could you refuse such a good opportunity? You're not rejecting it just for me, are you? I'm telling you, I'm not a stumbling block for you. If you want to go, go ahead. I won't stop you."

"Really?" Wang Duoyu looked at her suspiciously. She nodded immediately. The next moment, she seemed to notice the smile on his lips and became furious.

Just as she was waving her fist and wanted to hit him, Wang Duoyu had already dodged.

Haha!

"Well, you actually dared to laugh at my joke? Don't leave, wait and see how I beat you!"

The two of them were chasing and fighting on the street, laughing and angry, but it was hard for the two security staff who were following them a hundred meters away.

They were all security personnel arranged by Liu Deben. Five people from the Harbin Institute of Technology Security Department came to Beijing this time.

Upon learning that Wang Duoyu needed to go out, two security staff members were sent out to ensure Wang Duoyu's safety.

After a long while, Wang Duoyu and Zhu Ling finally stopped and found a state-owned restaurant to eat and chat while eating.

"Are you really not going to study abroad?"

After sitting down, Zhu Ling brought up the issue again. Wang Duoyu shook his head and briefly explained the situation, saying that he really didn't want to study in the United States.

Zhu Ling remained silent, but she was still moved.

Even though Wang Duoyu said it was his own fault, that he was not used to life in a foreign country, such a reason was too far-fetched. It was clearly for her!

Women are easily moved by themselves and think of other levels.

Seeing that she didn't say anything, Wang Duoyu felt helpless, because this was his real reason.

In his previous life, when he was studying in the United States, he was really losing weight. He weighed 160 kilograms before leaving the country, and 120 kilograms when he returned. Why?
Because I'm not used to the fast food in the United States, I eat fried chicken and hamburgers every day. It's okay for one or two meals, but if I do it every meal, it will cause stomach problems and make me get a sore throat.

Not only has Chinese fast food changed in taste, it is also extremely expensive and I can’t afford it.

After all, he was too picky about food and couldn't get used to the delicious food in the United States, so in the end he almost starved to death.

Unexpectedly, his most genuine reason was ignored by Zhu Ling, who was still moved by herself.

People are most afraid of imagining things, but this doesn’t seem to be a bad thing, right?

Two days later, in a small conference room at the Institute of Mathematics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Zhongguancun, Beijing, Tao Fangqi looked at Wang Duoyu in surprise.

"You mean you wrote thirteen more papers? All about the algebra behind quantum integrable systems?"

Everyone in the conference room was quite surprised. They didn't expect Wang Duoyu to be so fast.

He just submitted a paper on the Poincaré conjecture at the end of September, and now he has written thirteen more papers. Where does he find so much time?
Tao Fangqi, Feng Kang and others all knew that Wang Duoyu was also involved in the project of Professor Xia Peisu of the Institute of Computing Technology. The high-speed array processor project had just been established not long ago, so it should be very busy.

So how did Wang Duoyu find so much time to write thirteen papers in just two months, October and November?
Tian Shouzhong and others became withdrawn, especially the master's students who just joined the Institute of Mathematics this year. It takes them at least three or four months to write a paper, but Wang Duoyu wrote thirteen papers in just two months.

The key point is that the papers he wrote can actually be published in top journals, even top foreign journals, while the papers written by these master's students still need guidance and revisions from their supervisors before they can be passed.

The difference is clear at a glance!
Wang Duoyu smiled modestly and said:
"Actually, my paper is just a piece of junk paper, not of much quality."

Feng Kang and others did not believe at all that the algebraic problems behind quantum integrable systems were a new field. What's more, Tao Fangqi had just glanced at the title of one of the papers, which was closely related to the Langlands concept discussed by former superstar Duoyu and Professor Chen Xingshen.

Eleven years ago, Canadian mathematician Robert Langlands proposed a set of far-reaching conjectures in a letter to American mathematician André Weil.

These conjectures gave rise to three relatively independently developed branches of mathematics: number theory, group representation theory, and algebraic geometry, which are actually closely related.

In September, Shing-Tung Yau helped collect many professional mathematics journals, including many papers about the Langlands concept.

Originally, these papers were nothing special, after all, anyone could read them. But no one expected that after reading them, Wang Duoyu started writing papers and produced thirteen papers at once.

Now that Tao Fangqi and his team had received the paper, they began to read it, and the more they read, the more surprised they were.

Papers like "Using harmonic analysis to study important L functions in number theory and reconstructing class field theory", "Non-divergent Abelian extensions on the field of univariate algebraic functions with algebraically closed fields as coefficient fields", and "On the relationship between algebraic K-theory and its Galois cohomology, as well as rigid analytic spaces" made Tao Fangqi and his team's eyelids twitch just by the titles.

Such an important research result is actually "water"?
Aren’t Wang Duoyu’s requirements for the quality of the paper too high?
Take the theory of class fields as an example. It appeared in 1853 when Kronecker first proposed the idea of class fields. Kronecker concretized the "class field" into a mathematical concept - associated species.

In 1898, Hilbert proposed a series of ideas about Abelian extensions on number fields. These conjectures are the prototypes of the basic theorems of class field theory.

In the 1930s, Sadaharu Takagi established the basic theorem of class field theory based on Artin's group theory, thus creating a new theoretical system: class field theory.

Class field theory is closely related to the Langlands conception. Although the Langlands conception is still just a conception, it is conceivable that once Wang Duoyu's thirteen papers are published, it will inevitably cause a great shock in the mathematical community.

Up to now, although many people have studied the Langlands idea, there are not many mathematicians who truly support this idea, let alone any extremely important research results.

But Wang Duoyu has now embarked on this path and entered this scientific research direction. Maybe he can really make some discoveries.

Tao Fangqi and his colleagues started studying Wang Duoyu's paper on the spot, so they had no time to deal with him, and he walked out of the Institute of Mathematics.

Shiing-Shen Chern and Shing-Tung Yau were attending other activities and had no time to communicate with Wang Duoyu.

This time Chen Shiing-Shen comes to Beijing and will not leave for a short time. Although he is old, he still wants to travel around and take a look.

So Wang Duoyu had nothing to do, so he just strolled around Xidan.

Zhu Ling has to go to work and doesn't have that much time to hang out with him.

After buying some cakes, Wang Duoyu strolled to No. 97 Qianmen West Street. When Fu Jixiang saw him, his eyes widened:
"Hey, the great writer is here again. Come in and sit down. It's warm here. You said you were coming, so why are you here with a gift? I'll take it back later."

Fu Jixiang was particularly enthusiastic, not because Wang Duoyu brought gifts, but because the latter was indeed a very friendly person.

Wang Duoyu had only bothered him once, but every time he came to Beijing, he would almost always visit with gifts. He was a very nice person, and Fu Jixiang was of course impressed, so he was very enthusiastic.

Wang Duoyu is the one who truly understands the ways of the world and handles it just right.

After chatting with Fu Jixiang for a while, Wang Duoyu sat for a while, then entered the compound, came to the editor-in-chief's office, and met Editor-in-Chief Zhou Yanru.

When the old lady saw him coming, she stood up to greet him with joy.

After exchanging pleasantries for a while, the old lady took him to the small storage room in the south wing, where there were two more sacks of mail.

The reason why I have accumulated two sacks of letters from readers in less than a month is that "Snow City Volume 2: Spring Equinox" has been published, so many readers have written to me collectively.

"How about we change the mailing address to Harbin Institute of Technology?"

Hearing the old lady's suggestion, Wang Duoyu shook his head and refused. "Editor-in-chief, please help me. I'm afraid that if my address is really published, I will be in turmoil. What if a reader really comes to Harbin Institute of Technology?"

This is no joke. It is 1978. Whether you are a farmer or a city dweller, if you want to go to other places, you still need supporting documents such as letters of introduction and passes.

But after the December meeting, many things will slowly change starting next year.

What if someone really came to Harbin Institute of Technology, even trying to commit suicide? How would Wang Duoyu deal with it?

So to be on the safe side, it's fine as it is now.

Zhou Yanru rolled her eyes at him, feeling both amused and helpless. "I don't know what your charm is. Others don't get many letters from readers, but you get hundreds and hundreds of them."

"If I weren't sure you didn't ask readers to write to you in your book, maybe our magazine's recent good sales are really due to your good writing."
