Chapter 386 Mission: 14-2 End of the story
After a long-distance collision with Mondes, Nero was a little weak at the moment.
The scattered magic triggered an electrical charge in the clouds, bringing thunder and heavy rain. Knowing Dante would be waiting there, Nero returned to the nightclub entrance and was met with a confrontation between Virgil, who had arrived earlier, and Dante.
Seeing Nero approach, Virgil raised his weapon cautiously. His magical power surged, evaporating the rain, and a white mist began to rise from his body.
"Why you?" he asked.
"Why not me?" Nero chuckled and tightened his grip on the weapon in his hand: "Long time no see, Virgil."
Sensing the obvious hostility from Nero, Dante clenched his fists and gritted his teeth, but still held back what he wanted to say. Nero noticed his expression out of the corner of his eye, nodded slightly, and silently told him: Leave it to me.
This was something they had agreed on before.
If you want to fight Virgil, then let Nero do it himself.
"You devil..."
Virgil glared at Nero and roared, "What on earth are you planning?!"
He seemed to still think that Nero was on Mendes' side, but his voice did not seem so confident at this moment.
"I'm only here to defeat the Demon King."
Nero drew her sword cane. A crisscross of azure magic and angelic power rose from her back, like a pair of flaming wings.
She stood beneath the flaming wings, her blue eyes burning with the same flames: "That's all."
Such power immediately shocked Virgil: "How is it possible to possess two powers at the same time?! Are you——"
While he was still in shock, Nero had already made her move. She advanced, the blade of her cane sword swirling with immense magical energy. With one strike, she radiated countless rays of light, slicing through the rain like thunder, transforming into a dense net that enveloped Virgil.
Virgil raised his sword to block, and the black scabbard collided with the sword light in the sky one by one. The shattered residual light exploded like fireworks, illuminating Virgil's astonished face.
"Impossible! How is this possible?!" Virgil parried and retreated, finally unsheathing his sword and slashing with a brilliant flash. The power within the blade slashed through space, blending into the torrential rain, splitting into countless tiny slashes that in turn surrounded Nero's sword light, attempting to force her back.
At the same time, he was still questioning: "How could you be——"
Then his voice stopped.
"Is it so taboo to say this name?"
Instantly, the blade light in front of Nero converged, condensing into a blinding bolt of lightning that tore through the darkness. This lightning shot up into the sky, going against the tide, shattering and suppressing the turbulent spatial force.
Then Nero's figure appeared behind the lightning, the crescent-shaped blade spinning in her hand, turning into a giant sickle and falling towards Virgil's head.
She laughed at Virgil: "When you were angry just now, I didn't see you worry about being heard?"
There was no doubt that Nero was already a Nephilim. Both she and the weapon she held could freely transform between the two different powers of angel and demon - just like Dante and Virgil.
I never thought that Samael, being both an angel and a demon, would come in handy at a time like this. Of all Nero's weapons, only this one could perfectly carry the power of the Nephilim.
Virgil fell backward, narrowly avoiding Nero's scythe. He then propped himself up and rolled over, slashing his blade across his face. Two different colored blades merged the two different powers, forming a bright cross that blocked Nero's pursuit.
"——Wait!" Virgil hurriedly stopped after the flash of the knife: "I apologize for my previous misunderstanding of you, so please wait a moment!"
Nero did indeed pause. She held the scythe in her backhand, the mirror-like blade and pale cheeks reflecting the dazzling neon lights of the nightclub photos behind her. Her burning gaze lingered on Virgil, who sheathed his scythe as a gesture of friendship, wanting to hear his opinion.
"Please allow me to formally apologize for my previous unfounded assumptions about you. I am also willing to make amends for the actions I took towards you as a result of these misunderstandings..."
He rambled on, from apology to compensation, from compensation to reconciliation. So Nero interrupted him impatiently: "Is this what you want to say?"
"of course not."
Virgil paused, took a deep breath, and let the moist air with the smell of rain fill his chest. Then he spoke:
"What I want to say is that as a..."
Seeing Virgil's hesitation, Nero shook her head speechlessly. Her heavy hair clung to the back of her neck, making it uncomfortable when she turned her head, so she reached out and reached behind her neck from behind her ear, brushing it away.
"I think Nephilim can speak frankly. There's no one here who would tip off Mondes."
This is also the most important reason why Virgil is finally willing to trust Nero - because of the existence of the prophecy, Mendes will never tolerate any living Nephilim, let alone let her become a subordinate.
"I'm sorry, that's not what I meant." Virgil seemed to think Nero was still blaming him for what he had done to her before. He apologized again and added, "...As partners who also want to defeat Mendes, shouldn't we cooperate?"
"……ha."
Sure enough?
In the cold rain, Nero sighed and a helpless smile appeared on the corner of his mouth.
As expected, at this point, she was really naive to still have some hope for Virgil.
"What do you think?" Seeing that Nero did not answer, Virgil asked again: "If you still have doubts about how to distribute the future after defeating Mendes, we can-"
"Shut up."
Nero closed his eyes and interrupted him coldly: "Don't force me to kill you."
Virgil, who had flattered the wrong person again, was stunned: "You——"
"I've already said it. My goal is to defeat the King of the Demon Realm."
Virgil added quickly, "This isn't the same as—"
"It's not about defeating Mendes." Nero opened his eyes again, and the glint in his eyes almost hurt Virgil: "Do you know the difference?"
If even after all this, Virgil still couldn't understand, then he wasn't a Nephilim, but a fool. Nero's hostility was directed towards all the kings of the demon world, whether present, past, or future.
"Now you understand why I chose Dante." She turned her wrist expressionlessly, and the scythe in her hand flashed with light, sliding along the curve of the blade to the tip. "Compared to him, you, living among humans, are more like a demon."
This is the essence that cannot be changed even if the two brothers exchanged their lives.
