Chapter 240 Mission: 01-8 Life Accident
"Still playing!"
When his aunt returned home, she interrupted Lu Mingfei's leisure time with a shrill voice. However, Lu Mingfei had no reason to be dissatisfied. As a student with only a few months left before the college entrance examination, playing games like this was indeed a bit unethical. In a sense, his aunt was also concerned about him.
But what good would it be if he didn't play? His grades were mediocre to begin with, and he wasn't even qualified to consider those top-tier schools. And the living expenses his parents sent him guaranteed his aunt and uncle would at least find him a university. When the future wouldn't change whether he worked hard or not, who would bother to suffer when nothing else mattered?
Then, his aunt sent Lu Mingfei to the supermarket to buy groceries, a job he and his uncle had always been responsible for. Lu Mingfei actually preferred to be sent to work while his uncle was at home, so he could earn more change through outsourcing. His cousin, Lu Mingze, didn't have to do this kind of work; otherwise, he wouldn't be as tall and heavy.
Maybe this is what they call "those who are favored are fearless."
Lu Mingfei knew where the nominally "saved" living expenses had gone; after all, Lu Mingze was known for his lavish spending at school. But Lu Mingfei said nothing, neither protesting nor complaining. Six years ago, when his parents were still around, he should have lived a more carefree life than Lu Mingze did today, but that time seemed so long ago, like a distant memory.
It seemed like this was how life under someone else's roof was supposed to be. Lu Mingfei at least lived and ate with his cousin, and besides no one showing up for the parent-teacher conference, he didn't feel like he was missing anything.
Lu Mingfei, carrying milk and sausages, put down his things for a moment and stood at the door of the reception desk. If his aunt hadn't reminded him, he would have forgotten about this. In fact, he was applying to American universities. After all, his English was one of the few grades that seemed to be okay, which lowered the class average. Plus, he had done well on the TOEFL before, so if he got lucky and his parents asked about it, he would have an explanation.
Unfortunately, Lu Mingfei's judgment of himself was relatively accurate; he only had the first two of the three "luck in the mouth" categories. His aunt had enrolled him in prestigious schools, which certainly wouldn't accept a misfit like him.
Lu Mingfei hadn't held out much hope, so naturally, he hadn't bothered to reply. His aunt, however, was very concerned. After all, while Lu Mingze's grades were good, they were still just average compared to a million-strong army. If Lu Mingfei could study abroad, with this successful experience, they would have another option when making plans for Lu Mingze.
"Is there a letter for me?" he asked. "From America."
It was quite sad to think about it this way. Apart from these rejection letters, he wouldn't receive any other emails from others. The security guard glanced at him. He had heard this question a dozen times before, so he threw out an envelope in a prepared manner: "Here you go, Mingfei Lu."
Lu Mingfei sometimes envied the doorman, who ranked second on his "want-to-be" list, with the old man at the newsstand at first. Leisure is a good thing; it makes the ordinary seem less boring.
The letter the security guard handed over was very thin, looking like just a piece of paper. It was obviously not the admission notice that would come with all sorts of attachments. Lu Mingfei was too lazy to open the letter right then and there, so he took it and was about to leave when he was stopped by the security guard.
"There are also attachments, please sign for them."
This was quite unusual. Lu Mingfei signed the order and received a large FedEx envelope with a heavy brick sealed inside. Lu Mingfei asked the uncle to keep an eye on his purchases and went to the side to open the package. Inside was a black slider phone.
Lu Mingfei didn't have his own phone, so this strange gift immediately reminded him of the strange number he had received a few days ago, and the mysterious blonde girl. Could it be that the other party was getting impatient and was urging Lu Mingfei to contact him quickly?
That was truly flattering. But why did Lu Mingfei deserve this? Did he really have some hidden superpower?
He had memorized the string of eleven numbers by heart, and the handkerchief with the numbers was carefully hidden. Lu Mingfei didn't have much private space at home, but the small iron box behind the air conditioner outdoor unit was something no one would be tempted to look at. After a moment's hesitation, Lu Mingfei pressed the power button on his phone. While it powered on, he opened another letter.
This letter, sent from the United States, was surprisingly written entirely in Chinese. It began: "Dear Mr. Lu Mingfei, Thank you very much for your interest in the University of Chicago..."
He was right; it was a rejection letter. But why was there a cell phone attached to the rejection letter? If a university gave all its applicants a cell phone, it would go bankrupt within a month.
I've never heard of any university specifically writing rejection letters in the applicant's native language. It's just a hassle, like having a template and changing the name and address and sending it out. Who has the time to create dozens of templates in different languages and keep switching back and forth?
Lu Mingfei was about to continue reading when he suddenly felt a chill on his back. He raised his head, intending to move out into the sun, but suddenly realized there was no one around. It was after get off work, the city at its busiest, and this unusual sight gave him a shiver.
what happened?
He instinctively stood up and trudged back to the building. The guardhouse was empty, the door open, and the warm air from the air conditioner blew out. The air conditioner was still on in the guardhouse during the warm spring weather. Lu Mingfei couldn't help but marvel at the luxury and comfort of this uncle.
But the uncle was gone. Lu Mingfei, sweat breaking out on his forehead, quickly returned to the building and pressed the elevator button.
He wants to go home.
However, Lu Mingfei had apparently forgotten one thing: when something strange happened, the most unsafe place was an enclosed space like an elevator. As he pressed the button for his aunt's floor, the elevator started shaking and a terrifying roar echoed from above his head.
The lights in the elevator flickered briefly, then went out. The sudden darkness gripped Lu Mingfei's heart, and a surge of panic filled his mind. After a brief moment of weightlessness, the elevator's emergency safety measures activated, trapping Lu Mingfei between the ground floor and the basement level. The lights came back on.
Light always brings a sense of security. Lu Mingfei breathed a sigh of relief, remembering that he should have pressed the emergency button in every elevator. An elevator accident wasn't a big deal; as long as he didn't get too carried away, he'd be fine once help arrived.
It was then that he remembered that his aunt had not yet taken the things she wanted to buy. He hoped that she would forgive him when she saw how bad his luck was.
However, just as his finger was about to touch the button, there was another loud bang. Lu Mingfei's feet flew off the ground, and he fell straight down under the force of gravity.
