Chapter 64: Puppy Dragon is like this
Chapter 64: Puppy Dragon is like this
The Count's flying speed is limited, and Cohen can't make the process of "selling venom - getting money - buying feathers" faster.
During the nearly one-week wait, Cohen and Harry watched the entire process of Norbert, who was originally only the size of Hagrid's fist, growing into the size of the hound Fang.
On Wednesday afternoon, Cohen and others arrived at Hagrid's door.
"It's growing so fast - I have a feeling it'll be as big as this room in the next week!"
Ron was reluctant to go into Hagrid's house because Norbert was running around in it, and the whole house was shaking from the banging of his thick tail.
Just by looking from the outside, you can tell what a mess the wooden house is in.
"It's okay, it'll be quiet once Cohen comes in," Harry advised Ron with great experience. "I don't know why, but every time Cohen came in, Norbert would be very quiet."
"Maybe it's just afraid of me," Cohen said, feigning uncertainty. "I guess cracking its eggshell has left a psychological scar on it."
"Indeed, think about it, when you were born, there was a huge monster outside the eggshell trying to pull you out..." Ron said dramatically, pinching the air in front of him with both hands, as if trying to imitate the appearance of a terrible devil in his imagination.
"I hope it doesn't burn down Hagrid's house..." Hermione smelled a burning smell - she couldn't tell if it was Hagrid's beard or Hagrid's house.
Cohen went up and knocked on the door, and heard Norbert's roar and Fang's whimpering from inside.
"Oh—don't be impatient... Don't get excited, Norbert—be obedient..."
Hagrid was trying to control Norbert.
After a scuffle, the door opened a crack.
The remaining three people except Cohen all took a step back, wanting to wait until Cohen scared Norbert before following him in to avoid being injured by mistake.
As soon as Cohen pushed open the door, he saw Hagrid holding Norbert like a baby. The dragon's back was bent into a C shape, but it was still trying to struggle to break free.
"Bah-"
Sparks were constantly coming out of its nostrils, and Hagrid's beard was burnt in several places.
After Cohen appeared in Norbert's sight, it immediately stopped struggling, and slid out of Hagrid's arms like a loach, happily rubbing against Cohen's legs - in fact, Norbert was now almost as tall as Cohen's waist.
"This is called Stockholm syndrome when applied to people."
Cohen looked at Norbert, who was circling around him, with great confusion.
When it was just hatched, it felt fear when it saw Cohen.
But now, when it gets close to Cohen, it only feels happy - and even after Cohen touches its head, the happiness in it becomes more intense.
What is this? Is this masochism?
After Norbert calmed down in an instant, the whole world seemed to become quiet.
Luckily, Hagrid's house was filled with blankets and pendants made from the fur of magical animals, many of which were fireproof, so Norbert could only scorch the wooden tables and chairs, the wooden walls, and Hagrid's beard.
“It’s so cute…”
Hagrid looked with tears in his eyes at Norbert who had crawled over Cohen's legs and curled up into a ball.
"..."
Harry, Hermione, and Ron remained silent—they didn't find the black dragon particularly adorable, especially since they were sitting in the ruins it had created. Scraps of cloth and hair from unknown creatures were scattered everywhere, and Hagrid's unicorn blanket was ripped to pieces, looking like it had once served as Norbert's teething aid—he now had a new one, a crude wooden sculpture of a dragon Hagrid had carved for him, with fresh teeth marks on it.
Probably carved from the wood of some wand tree that hadn't been burned by Norbert.
"I actually feel okay."
Cohen commented neutrally.
It is indeed cute from a certain angle, of course, when it is quiet.
If it keeps its puppy-like personality, it will be a very fresh and useful pet.
"Should we move it to that room in the next few days?"
Harry asked.
"By the way, I'm dragging you here to see Norbert today because of this." Cohen was about to tell Dumbledore what he meant. "We can't keep it in the castle anymore."
"What?" Hermione asked in horror. "But it's going to be the size of a house by the end of the term!"
"So I can keep it in the woods?" Hagrid asked hopefully.
"No, once its wing membrane thickens a little, it will be able to fly. By then, everyone in the school will know there is a dragon in the Forbidden Forest." Cohen shook his head. "The school board will not let it stay here alive. The Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures will send people to kill it."
"By getting rid of it I mean..." Harry said cautiously.
"If it meets the requirements for usable fire dragon materials, it will be killed and its blood, skin, and other materials taken," Cohen said briefly. "If it doesn't meet the requirements, it will probably be captured."
"They can't do that!" cried Hagrid. "It's too cruel!"
Norbert seemed to understand what Cohen meant - he began to rub his head against Cohen's belly, trying to impress Cohen with his cute actions.
If other less lovable creatures were to take this position, they would probably be a bit unreasonable...
"Why can't we keep it in that room?" Hermione asked worriedly. "We can't - maybe we should ask Ron to contact his brother Charlie."
"But Charlie's dragon will eventually be made into wizard material, right?" Harry said soberly. "It seems the ending is the same..."
"Because Dumbledore wrote to me," Coin replied. "He forbade us to keep a dragon in the castle. It would be dangerous for the students—and he was right."
After hearing that Dumbledore knew about Norbert, Hagrid's face turned pale instantly.
"D-Professor Dumbledore knows?" Hagrid's voice trembled. "Sure enough, nothing can be hidden from him..."
"Don't blame yourself too much, Hagrid. Dumbledore didn't forbid this—even though it's illegal, at least he won't report us," Cohen comforted him. "And he also wants to help us."
"Oh my god... Woohoo... Dumbledore is really... um..." Hagrid covered his face, not knowing what to say, "I... he trusted me so much... and in the end..."
"What's the solution?" Ron asked cautiously. "If all else fails, I'll write to Charlie right now—I'm sure he can help..."
"We can keep it in a box."
Cohen replied:
"Use the Undetectable Extension Charm. I'm working on it. Dumbledore gave me a reference book. Now I just have to wait for the Earl to return with the last ingredient I need. Then the box that can house a dragon will be ready."
