Chapter 56: The Sedimentation of Porcelain and Other Antiques
This is to answer the question raised by some fellow Taoists about whether the Song Dynasty porcelain that Zhou Qing picked up and sold as antiques has the value of being aged.
My personal understanding of "years of accumulation" is divided into two parts:
1. Patina. This is the source of doubts among book lovers, because many collectors believe that all antiques must have patina. (I will focus on this issue later)
2. The aesthetics, materials, craftsmanship, physical climate environment, etc. in ancient times were different from those today.
Aesthetics - Each era has its own aesthetics. The aesthetics of the Song Dynasty have the aesthetic characteristics of the Song Dynasty. This is one of the important bases for identifying antiques. (This is easy to understand, no need to elaborate)
Materials - Take the kiln factory in the same location as an example: this kiln factory uses soil from the same piece of land, and the available soil layer is ten meters thick. The Tang Dynasty used 1 to 2 meters above, the Song Dynasty used 3 to 4 meters, the Yuan Dynasty used 5 to 6 meters, and the Qing Dynasty used 7 to 8 meters. We now use 9 to 10 meters of soil to burn porcelain. Although the soil comes from the same place, the composition proportions of different soil layers are different.
Craftsmanship - The craftsmanship of each era is related to the level of technology at the time and the environment of the production site. (This is easy to understand, so I won't go into details)
The physical climate environment - the macroclimate is constantly changing. (This is also easy to understand and I won't elaborate on it.)
……
and many more.
The porcelain that Zhou Qing materializes through the panel fully possesses the second part of the accumulation of time, but does not fully conform to the first part.
The reason why it does not completely conform to the first part is that it also has a patina - it has been used in the novel and has traces of use, and this part will bring a patina of usage.
But it does not have the oxidative patina from the Song Dynasty to our modern times, which is the source of everyone's doubts, and they subconsciously think it is too "new".
However, a true antique connoisseur would not judge an item's age solely based on its patina.
The reality is that many porcelains are "appreciation objects" or for some other reasons, and they have not seen the light of day for many years. For example, they are stored in cellars, large vats, partitions, wells, caves, etc. They are not fully used, not fully phototreated, and not fully oxidized, that is, the patina has not formed. However, its aesthetic is old, the materials are old, the craftsmanship is old, and the external conditions of its creation are also old... It itself has a sense of history.
……
Of course, if antiques that appear in the future contain "organic matter" and can be detected using carbon 14, the protagonist will take this into consideration.
I don’t know if you can accept my explanation.
If you cannot accept it, please leave a message and I will modify the previous text as appropriate.
As usual, please be sure to read it! Please vote for next month.
