Chapter 609 Gathering in One Hall
After bidding farewell to Brianna, Roland headed straight for the Holly Tower. On the way, he saw from the window a procession of knights in gleaming armor, carrying banners embroidered with gold and silver, just entering the castle gates.
Roland didn't recognize the flags, but he could tell that the knights' armor was extremely precious magical armor. Even if the kings of the surrounding small kingdoms pooled all their wealth together, they couldn't forge two sets.
The procession had already entered the castle's forecourt, and judging from the attire of those alighting from the carriages, the king looked like a country bumpkin to them.
When those exceptionally tall and imposing knights removed their helmets, they revealed pointed ears—there were quite a few elves in the group!
Since returning from the ruins at the age of sixteen and gradually regaining some of his memories, Roland has become exceptionally interested in elves, even though he had been interested in them before.
Taverns are always filled with beautiful love stories between humans and elves, but once you actually meet an elf, you'll find that the story is just a story.
The two are vastly different in terms of culture, height, and appearance.
In one of the newspapers Miss Brianna frequently read, there was a census of the world's population conducted by wizards. Currently, because society is in the early stages of the magical revolution, many people are still starving, and in many impoverished areas where the truth has not yet reached, many families even have to share a single pair of trousers.
Currently, the wizards are working hard to ensure everyone has enough to eat and that every family can send someone to school. Without enough to eat, naturally, one won't grow tall. And society as a whole is far less civilized than that of the elves.
The average height of humans worldwide is just over 1.6 meters. People like Roland, who are over 1.9 meters tall, are extremely rare, even among nobles and wizards.
The average height of the elves is over 1.9 meters, and those royals with ancient bloodlines have an average height of 2.2 meters.
The male elven knight who was embracing and chatting with Baron Victor in front of the castle gate looked just like royalty.
This elven prince was incredibly handsome, even more elegant than the elven princes in the stories sung by bards. But his height was terrifying.
Baron Victor was born in the Vilmier Cathedral and was once the Grand Master of the Knights of the Dawn Temple. He was so tall that he could be described as imposing; if he stood on the altar of the cathedral, he would be worshipped as an archangel or demigod.
But even standing on two steps, he was still half a head shorter than the elf prince!
In the eyes of elves, humans and goblins are probably not much different, so how could an elf possibly fall in love with a human?
'Do I really have such a tall elf wife?' Roland muttered to himself, recalling some things he had dreamed about.
Lost in thought, Roland bumped into someone. Looking up, he saw it was Joan.
"What's all the rush about? Weren't you going back to pack your things for the interview?" Roland asked. "Judging by the direction you're going, it looks like you're heading back to your dorm. Did you forget something?"
“I really have to go back.” Joan looked out the window, her face anxious. “Did you see that elf? His name is Nal, and he’s Alexandra’s personal bodyguard. It seems Her Highness has come in person!”
Roland asked with a strange expression, "She's not here to interview us, is she?"
"That's what I'm worried about!" Joan said anxiously, her forehead covered in sweat. "I can't talk to you anymore, I have to hurry back and change. I have to hurry back and call my sister over."
"Hey, hey, don't rush off." Roland pulled Joan aside and asked, quite puzzled, "Can't you two go to the interview together?"
"You'd better be happy!" Joan suddenly became angry. "A princess like her would never bring a man in or out of the palace, so she only has female disciples! This time, she probably only gave you a chance to meet her because of Victor. If you perform well, you might become her nominal apprentice and then have Wallace teach you."
"I follow her to break the pact between my family and the goddess Heracles, so naturally I need to become a true disciple. Well, I mean, my sister follows her to break the pact, so naturally it has to be her."
"But...does this conflict with your nominal apprenticeship to Alexandra?" Roland asked, puzzled.
Joan was stunned by the question.
"Why are you asking so many questions? I have my reasons for not going!" Joan said somewhat irritably, "Stop talking nonsense. Remember, if the interview asks about it, don't let it slip! I've never had a brother, only a sister. And she lives next door to you, not in your dorm!"
"Okay. So, what's your sister's name?"
“I came here to study under her name, so naturally I’m using her name.” Qiong’s face flushed slightly.
"Good heavens!" Roland exclaimed incredulously, "I treated you like a brother, and you haven't even told me your real name?" "Idiot! Joan is my real name, but she'll be using it from now on." Joan then muttered under her breath, "Besides, she never expected to be friends with you, why would I tell you so much?"
That's true. He thought he was just a stranger he would never see again after two months, but Baron Victor and Miss Brianna arranged for him to be Roland's roommate.
What I never expected was that after two months of getting along, this kid, whom I initially disliked, would become so good to me.
“I understand. Your sister will be called Joan from now on. What will you be called?” Roland asked curiously.
“Andrei.” Joan paused for a moment when she said the name. “If you don’t plan to become a professor at the academy, we probably won’t see each other again.”
"Well, alright." Roland sighed and opened his arms to Joan.
Joan was taken aback for a moment, then blushed and hugged Roland.
“I will write to you, Andrei.” Roland patted Joan on the back. “Miss Brianna knows where to send it, right?”
“Just give it to my sister.” Joan pushed Roland away, blushing as she pointed to the courtyard outside the window and changed the subject: “See that tree? You wait for her there.”
After uttering a bunch of nonsensical words, Joan left. Roland, completely bewildered, scratched his head and went to the courtyard.
Surprisingly, a beautiful elf lady also seemed to be waiting for someone nearby.
From a distance, her perfect proportions might make one mistake her for being as tall as an average person, but when Roland got closer to the tree, only five or six steps away, he realized that this young lady was unusually tall.
Although not as exaggeratedly tall as the elf prince chatting with Victor in front of the building, Roland would still need to stand on two steps to look at her eye level.
Despite being an elegant elf, she seemed to be venting her anger by whipping the flowers in the flower bed with her sword sheath. She must have been furious and was in a bad mood.
Suddenly, Roland realized that the beautiful elf lady looked somewhat like the prince, perhaps they were siblings. What intrigued him even more was that her face was remarkably similar to, yet not exactly the same as, a face from his dream.
Or rather, the two are seven or eight parts alike. However, this elf lady lacks a bit of composure and calmness in her personality, and has more of a wild and unruly nature.
Roland couldn't help but take a second look.
Upon looking at it this way, Roland couldn't help but recall some scenes from his dream that he couldn't tell anyone else. His eyes also couldn't help but dart downwards from the elf's delicate back.
When Roland looked up along the curve again, he saw a pair of furious eyes. Those cat-like brown pupils were so fierce they looked like they wanted to devour someone—he had been caught red-handed.
The elf lady was furious and had nowhere to vent her anger. Seeing the person behind her being so bold and rude, she actually gripped the hilt of her sword and strode over.
"Give me a reason not to beat you up," the elf lady said condescendingly.
For some reason, the elf girl felt inexplicably irritated whenever she saw Roland.
Roland actually thought about the reasons very seriously.
He touched his chest and bowed slightly, then earnestly stated three reasons: "First, this is my home, I am the host, and you are the guest."
Secondly, anyone who sees a beautiful foreign lady ruining the landscape painting he just finished tending in his yard will be curious enough to take a second look.
Third, you are no match for me.
So I advise you not to be impulsive, or I'll definitely hang you from a tree and beat you up.
