Chapter 266 Prepare for Action
"I'm fine, Lynn." Kate's voice was calm and firm. "They can question me, but they can't deny the facts. My job is to reveal the truth, no matter what the cost."
Lynn was silent for a moment, then said, "You don't have to face this alone. We are in this together."
In the headquarters' conference room, the team was summarizing the results of their operations. Lynn sat at one end of the table, flipping through a thick report, his face maintaining his usual calm expression.
Eric stood up and cleared his throat: "Okay, guys, I want to say a few words." His voice attracted everyone's attention, especially Lynn, who raised his head and looked at Eric with a hint of doubt.
"We've been through a lot of hard times over the past period. Failures, doubts, and arguments nearly dragged us down." Eric's gaze swept across everyone present, finally settling on Lynn. "But there was one person who remained calm and persevered. With his wisdom and actions, he led us to victory."
Lin En frowned slightly, as if he was not used to such public praise. He was about to say something when Eric raised his hand to interrupt him.
"Let me finish, Lynn." Eric smiled slightly, his tone more sincere. "I admit that I was skeptical of your leadership ability at first, and even had an argument with you. But today, I must admit that you are not only an outstanding detective, but also a trustworthy leader."
The meeting room was silent. Everyone was looking at Lin En, who seemed a little embarrassed. He whispered, "This is a team effort, not just my own."
"Don't be so modest, Inspector." John stood up with a smile. "Eric is right. You led us out of our darkest hour. Without you, we would not have been able to uncover this huge conspiracy."
Then, John turned to look at Eric and continued, "So, I propose that we apply for the headquarters' Medal of Honor for Lynn in recognition of his outstanding performance in this operation."
The conference room erupted in applause, and the team members nodded in support. Eric took the lead, saying, "I totally agree. He deserves this honor."
Lin En looked at these familiar faces, a complex wave of emotions welling up in his heart. He took a deep breath, stood up, and looked at everyone with a firm gaze: "Thank you for your trust and support. We won this battle together. I only hope that we can continue to fight side by side in the future to defend the justice we believe in."
Applause broke out again, and the atmosphere in the conference room instantly relaxed. Everyone began to chat and laugh, sharing their experiences and feelings during this period. The tension and barriers that had once existed seemed to dissipate in that moment.
After the meeting, Eric walked over to Lynn and held out his hand. "Brother, I owe you an apology. Those arguments in the past were caused by my stubbornness and shortsightedness."
Lynn shook Eric's hand and smiled calmly, "It's okay, Eric. I know you're doing this for the good of the team."
Eric nodded, his tone more relaxed. "I won't question you again. You are a true leader, Lynn."
A few days later, the head of headquarters met with Lin En. In the conference room, the head stood by the window, looking out through the glass at the bustling scene at headquarters. He turned, his eyes filled with admiration and deep thought. "Lin En, please sit down."
Lynn nodded politely and sat down in the chair across from the Chief.
The commander got straight to the point. "Your performance in this operation was impressive. Not only did you successfully dismantle the experimental organization, but you also restored a significant portion of our headquarters' reputation. We need more people like you."
Lynn listened quietly without saying a word.
The commander continued, "So, I have a proposal. I hope you can stay at headquarters and take direct charge of higher-level operations. This will not only allow you to fully utilize your talents, but also allow you to showcase yourself on a larger stage."
Lin En raised his head and looked at his superior calmly: "Thank you for your affirmation and suggestion. But I'm sorry, I'm afraid I can't accept it."
The commander was clearly surprised, his brow furrowed slightly. "Why? This is a rare opportunity. You'll have access to more resources and more important tasks at headquarters. This is a big step for your career."
Lin En smiled slightly, but his tone was firm. "I understand how important headquarters' resources and platform are, and I appreciate your trust in me. But I always feel that the real battlefield is on the front lines, not in this office."
The commander's expression turned serious. "Lin En, you've already proven your abilities. It would be a waste of your talent to continue staying on the front lines. Besides, staying at headquarters doesn't mean you're out of combat."
Lin En shook his head, a look of determination flashing in his eyes. "Headquarters does need strategists and decision-makers, but I'm more suited to being on the ground, working alongside my team. I understand their capabilities, and they trust me. We are an inseparable force."
The commander pondered for a moment, seemingly weighing Lin's words. He finally sighed, a hint of helplessness and respect in his tone: "Alright, Lin. I respect your choice. While it's a shame to lose such an outstanding senior commander, I'm confident you'll continue to create miracles on the front lines."
Lin En stood up and extended his hand to the officer. "Thank you, sir. I will continue to do my job well, uphold justice, and protect this society."
The two men shook hands, and the commander nodded. "If you ever change your mind, the door of headquarters is always open to you."
Lynn smiled and said, "Thank you, but I don't think that day will come soon."
As he left headquarters, Lynn walked down the hall, his eyes scanning the busy agents and technicians moving back and forth. He knew this was an important hub, but his heart always belonged to the front lines of action, to those who had to face threats and dangers directly.
After returning to the office, Eric greeted him with a smile, "What's wrong, Inspector? Does the commander want to keep you at headquarters?"
"Yes." Lynn shrugged, "But I refused."
Eric laughed. "I knew you wouldn't leave us. Seriously, Lynn, we don't know what we'd do without you."
Lin En patted Eric's shoulder, his eyes revealing a hint of determination: "Don't worry, I'm not planning to retire yet. There are still many things we need to accomplish together."
The next evening, Lynn and Kate finally returned to Manhattan. Lynn drove through the familiar streets, his eyes occasionally scanning the street scenes outside the car window, and a long-lost sense of peace came over him.
"You haven't been home for so long. Will your family think you're missing?" Kate teased with a hint of joking in her tone.
Lynn smiled slightly. "George won't mind too much. He's used to it. But Gwen might have a lot of questions waiting for me."
The car stopped in front of Lin En's house. The sunset glowed red in the sky. The two got out of the car and walked towards the door. Lin En just took out the key when the door suddenly opened.
"Brother!" Gwen stood at the door, hands on hips, a look of dissatisfaction on her face. "You still remember to come back? Dad and I almost think of you as a legendary figure."
Lynn ruffled her hair gently. "Sorry, I've been a bit busy lately. But look, I even brought a guest back." Kate stood aside and waved to Gwen with a smile. "Hello, Gwen. I'm Kate."
Gwen's eyes flicked back and forth between the two of them, a meaningful smile playing on her lips: "Hello, Kate, welcome to our home."
Inside the house, George was carrying out a plate of hot food from the kitchen. Seeing Lynn and Kate walk in, he showed a kind smile on his face: "Hey, Lynn, you finally brought your friends back this time. Come on, come in, don't stand there."
Lynn and Kate changed their shoes and walked into the restaurant. The table was already filled with dishes. Lynn smelled them and couldn't help but asked with a smile, "George, did you make all these yourself?"
"Of course," George replied proudly, "even though you don't come back often, our family traditions must still be maintained."
During the meal, George and Kate chatted enthusiastically. He asked about Kate's work with concern, and Kate responded politely, occasionally telling some funny stories about her work as a reporter, which made George laugh.
Gwen, on the other hand, kicked Lynn's leg under the table and whispered, "So, is Kate your girlfriend?"
Lin En glanced at her and shook her head: "Don't guess blindly."
Gwen curled her lips in disapproval, then continued chatting with Kate: "Sister Kate, you know, my brother was really dumb when he was little. Although he always pretended to be cool, he was actually very timid."
Kate couldn't help but laugh, "Really? I thought he was a cold-blooded inspector since he was a kid."
"No!" Gwen said seriously. "When he was little, he would run away when he saw a bug. It was really funny."
Lin En held his forehead helplessly: "Well, this is a dinner dedicated to exposing my past."
The meal was lively and filled with laughter. Afterward, George made some hot tea and sat on the sofa with Kate to continue chatting, while Lynn and Gwen cleared the table.
"You two are quite a good match," Gwen murmured, holding the plate in her hand, but her eyes were fixed on Kate on the sofa.
Lin En sighed: "I know what you want to say, but there's no rush for emotional matters. Let me finish dealing with the current matter first."
Gwen didn't say anything else, just nodded.
Late that night, Kate said goodbye to George and Gwen, and Lynn drove her home. On the way, they were silent for a while, and Kate suddenly said, "Your family is really nice, Lynn."
"Thank you." Lin En looked intently at the road ahead. "They are my most important support."
Kate glanced at him and said softly, "You are their pride too."
The corners of Lin En's mouth rose slightly, and there was a hint of tenderness in her eyes: "Kate, thank you."
The next morning, Lynn opened the office door to find a mountain of documents and several anxious-looking colleagues. The office was busier than usual: phones rang, printers spitted out paper, and his assistant, Mark, was toiling away among the piles of documents.
"Inspector! You're finally back!" Mark saw Lynn and immediately stood up from behind the desk, several unprocessed reports in his hand. "These cases are waiting for your approval. I wanted to share some of the responsibilities, but there are simply too many."
Lin En glanced at the documents on the table, frowned slightly, then put down the coffee in his hand and rolled up his sleeves: "Okay, let me see the situation."
Mark began to report quickly, "In the past few days while you were away, we've received a series of cases—a serial robbery case where the suspect appears to be using some kind of mutant ability; two reports of illegal arms trafficking, the source of which still needs to be confirmed; and a missing child case where the family has been pressing for help several times."
Lin En picked up the topmost document and flipped through it, muttering, "It looks like each one is not simple."
Mark nodded, a hint of fatigue in his tone. "One more thing. The city hall is also urging us to provide a summary report on the last genetic experiment organization's actions. They want to use this report to deal with public pressure."
Lin En's mouth twitched. "It seems they're using us as a shield. But that report can be put on the back burner. These cases are much more important than political games."
He placed the missing children's case file in the center of the table. "Let's start with this. Missing children's cases involve the safety of families and children, so we must prioritize them. Mark, call the detective in charge of this case and have him explain the details to me."
Mark nodded quickly and ran to contact the relevant personnel.
Lin En sat down and began to read through the reports of other cases one by one. As he read, he quickly wrote down the key points and quickly sorted out the key clues and priorities of each case.
A short while later, a missing persons detective walked into the office, carrying a stack of more detailed investigative materials. "Detective, this is the latest on the missing child case. The child is Emily, 10 years old. She disappeared on her way home from school three days ago. Her family has provided some eyewitnesses, but there's no surveillance footage of her whereabouts."
Lynn flipped through the materials and quickly asked, "Did the witness's account mention any suspicious vehicles or strangers approaching her?"
The detective shook his head. "There was no clear vehicle, but two witnesses mentioned that they seemed to have seen her talking to a man in a dark hoodie."
Lynn nodded. "Have you checked the nearby surveillance cameras to see if there are any suspicious people wearing dark hoodies?"
"We've checked, but most of the surveillance cameras in that area are damaged, and the information they can provide is very limited," the agent replied helplessly.
"Okay, let's continue collecting more clues." Lynn closed the file, his eyes determined. "We can start with the suspect's possible identity and retrieve crime records from nearby neighborhoods to see if there are any similar cases. Mark, you'll be responsible for coordinating with the community police officers and going door to door to find more witnesses. No details can be overlooked."
Mark quickly agreed, picked up his coat and prepared for action.
"By the way," Lynn added before he left, "the files on the serial robbery case are on the table. I'll study them immediately after I finish handling this case. For the time being, let the technical department analyze the intelligence on the illegal arms trade to see if there are any false clues." (End of this chapter)
