Chapter 50 The Color That "Won't Lie"

Chapter 50 The Color That "Won't Lie"
The sun was shining brightly and the breeze was gentle. The clouds in the sky playfully arranged themselves into various shapes, fluffy and lovely.

Meng Youyou rarely got up early on the weekend. She carefully examined her face in the mirror. Her skin still had a rosy glow from the morning, but she was unusually dissatisfied with her appearance.

Her long, black hair, which she had washed specially last night, was now loosely and smoothly draped over her shoulders, still carrying a faint peach scent that lingered around her nose.

Meng Youyou picked up a wooden comb and combed all her long hair to the front of her left shoulder. Her fingers moved nimbly through the strands of hair, each movement exceptionally patient and meticulous, allowing no room for error. Finally, she braided a bright yellow hairband, half-hidden and half-revealed among her dark hair, like the finishing touch.

Standing in front of the wardrobe, Meng Youyou was filled with worry...

……

Huo Qingshan stood by the car waiting, glancing down at his watch every now and then, but his face showed no sign of anxiety. Instead, a slight smile played on his lips, and he seemed to be in a good mood.

From afar, a bright yellow figure came into view. At first, the person seemed to be walking briskly and steadily, but halfway there, as if suddenly realizing something, the body's center of gravity suddenly tilted to the left, and then slowly walked towards this side with a limp.

Huo Qingshan couldn't help but chuckle, and the corners of his mouth curved upwards even further.

As she approached, Huo Qingshan saw her attire clearly.

She wore a pale yellow puff-sleeved shirt, light blue washed jeans, and tan canvas sneakers.

The eye-catching color combination is bold and flamboyant.

This visual contrast made Huo Qingshan feel for the first time that the increasingly bleak autumn could also be full of vitality, like a ray of bright morning sun, forcefully and unreasonably radiating light, effortlessly dispelling all the gloom, and domineeringly announcing the arrival of a sunny day.

"When I woke up this morning, I found that my right foot was still a bit uncomfortable, so I was a little slow and took a little longer. You shouldn't have had to wait too long, right?"

This was the first thing Meng Youyou said when she walked up to the man.

Huo Qingshan didn't expose her. While opening the car door for her, he replied, "It's alright. If your foot is uncomfortable, get in the car quickly."

In the car.

Huo Qingshan reached out and handed Meng Youyou something wrapped in plain oil paper. There were a few oil spots in some places, and it was still steaming.

Meng Youyou took it with some confusion, and felt a slight burning sensation when her fingertips touched it. "What is this?"

Huo Qingshan drove without looking to the side. "Roasted rice cakes, a specialty of Fanzhou City, want to try some?"

Meng Youyou opened the outer oil paper, and a cloud of steam carrying the fragrant aroma of rice wafted out. Inside was a roasted rice cake with a slightly charred outer layer and plump "cheeks," its surface glistening with an enticing sheen, dotted with sesame seeds and sauce.

Meng Youyou's appetite was immediately whetted. She opened her mouth and took a bite. The slightly charred and crispy outer skin of the rice cake made a crisp "crunch" sound between her teeth.

Then, the soft and chewy interior, wrapped with savory shredded potatoes and crispy fried dough sticks, comes at you. The richness of the sweet sauce and the tanginess of the pickled cabbage are cleverly intertwined, and the aroma of rice blends with all sorts of flavors, creating a burst of taste on your tongue.

With each bite, the rich flavor intensified. She ate with complete satisfaction, her eyes crinkling like a contented kitten lazily rolling around after a nap on a spring afternoon. Her pure and adorable contentment radiated sweet joy from the corners of her eyes and brows.

Huo Qingshan saw this scene through the rearview mirror and felt the fatigue from driving two hours round trip to buy roasted rice cakes instantly disappear.

……

When they arrived at the movie theater, Meng Youyou had just unbuckled her seatbelt and was about to get out of the car when she paused and started fixing her hair.

Suddenly, the light on her left dimmed abruptly. Before she could turn her head to look closely, a warm breath rushed towards her, carrying the unique scent of that man. Meng Youyou's heart skipped a beat, then pounded wildly in her chest like a startled deer, but she was still lost.

Before she could catch her breath, she felt a faint caress at the corner of her mouth—the familiar fingertips with calluses. It was fleeting, yet she instinctively held her breath, afraid that if she inhaled any more of his scent, her reason would crumble even faster.

"I got one grain of rice for you," he said as he stepped back.

Meng Youyou looked up at him, his face calm and his eyes expressionless... but she was no longer easily deceived by his facade. She looked at his earlobe with practiced ease, and sure enough, it was the red she had been hoping for.

Meng Youyou likes this color; it's a color that doesn't lie.

……

The two got out of the car and looked up to see that the exterior walls of the cinema were covered with white ceramic tiles, many of which were already slightly mottled.

Above the entrance, the large white characters with red borders that read "Fanzhou City Dongfanghong Cinema" are eye-catching yet simple. They are made of thick acrylic material, and although the edges are somewhat worn, they stand firmly at a high position, demonstrating the confidence of a long-established cinema.

After climbing several cement steps, you enter the hall. Under your feet is dark green terrazzo, with a pattern of stone pebbles that has been polished to a shine by the footsteps of passersby.

The old-fashioned chandelier still hangs overhead, its bulbs covered by metal shades, slightly dusty.

In one corner of the hall, a large crowd had gathered in front of a simple sales counter.

The wooden countertop had been worn smooth at the edges, and on it sat an old-fashioned popcorn machine, a dark, unremarkable iron lump. The vendor cranked the handle, and the corn kernels popped and burst open in the pot with a "clatter" as they heated up.

In an instant, a sweet and caramelized aroma filled the air, wafting into people's noses and tempting their appetites.

Meng Youyou, somewhat carried away by her own excitement, ran towards the crowd and nimbly made her way into the throng: "Master, I want a serving of popcorn."

As she walked back, contentedly holding her popcorn, sipping it, she saw the man waiting not far away... his gaze fixed downwards... on her feet?
He thought to himself, "Oh no! I was careless!"
One misstep will lead to eternal hatred!
Delicious food makes people neglect their duties!

He froze on the spot, unsure whether to move or not.

Huo Qingshan stepped forward and asked quite naturally, "Would you like anything else to drink? I'll go outside and buy it for you?"

A hint of surprise flashed in Meng Youyou's eyes, and she stammered, "I want to drink Arctic Ocean soda, orange flavor."

"Okay, wait for me here, I'll be right back."

When Huo Qingshan returned to the cinema after buying drinks, he found Meng Youyou still standing in the same spot, without moving, looking somewhat bewildered.

He strode over, shoved the soda into her hand, and whispered in her ear, "I already knew. I was just checking to see how it was recovering."

After pausing for two seconds, he added, "Whether I know it or not has nothing to do with whether I come today or not."

"That's a real tongue twister!" Meng Youyou thought to herself.

The man then slightly increased the distance between them and said, "The movie is about to start, let's go in."
