Chapter 126 Air-to-Air Missile Testing
Chapter 126 Air-to-Air Missile Testing
"Hello everyone, I am Wang Jiankun, the chief scientist of the Academy of Sciences. Today I will explain to you the operation of two new missiles. Please listen carefully. There will be a test after class. Only those who pass the test will be qualified to become operators of these two new missiles."
Wang Jiankun gave a speech to the more than 60 Southern Liberation Front soldiers sitting below.
The people below were all soldiers selected by my uncle who were loyal to the organization, had clear backgrounds, and had junior high school or high school education.
So when they heard Wang Jiankun's speech, everyone was very serious. No one whispered to each other, but picked up paper and pen to take notes.
"Okay, are you ready? I will explain while watching the video. Here I will only tell you how to do it. As for the principles, I will provide materials later. If you have more time to learn, you can read the materials to learn the principles."
"Ready." Everyone shouted in unison.
Wang Jiankun turned on the projector and played the animated demonstration film that Tomoko helped make.
The first picture shows the appearance of two missiles and their launch vehicles, with the two models D-300 and K-3 written next to them.
"Please look, this time I'm going to explain these two missiles. The one on the left is the D-300 surface-to-surface missile, which has a range of 300 kilometers, so it's named D-300. The one on the right is the K-3 air defense missile, which has an effective firing height of 3 meters, so it's named K-3."
After everyone had recorded the models of the two missiles, a picture was put down.
"This D-300 surface-to-surface missile can be loaded on one launch vehicle with two missiles. It uses a high-explosive warhead, has a destructive radius of 2 meters, an accuracy of 80 meters, a terminal speed of Mach 30, and uses a parabolic trajectory."
"This K-3 air defense missile can be loaded on one launch vehicle with four missiles. Generally, two missiles are launched to attack one target when dealing with supersonic fighters. If it is used against subsonic aircraft, one missile is enough to attack one target. In the early stage, it uses ground radar guidance. When it approaches the target about 4 kilometers, its own radar and infrared seeker start to work, and no ground radar guidance is needed."
After Wang Jiankun explained some parameters of the two missiles, he began to introduce the workflow of the entire system.
"This surface-to-surface missile has two usage modes. One is to attack known coordinates, and the other is to counterattack the enemy's artillery positions or missile positions. Next, the animation demonstrates the operation of the two modes. Everyone pay attention and record it."
Then the animation begins to demonstrate how ground-to-ground missiles deal with enemy targets with known coordinates.
When an order comes from superiors to attack a certain target or a front-line observer reports the target coordinates, the radar operator in the radar vehicle first turns on the radar and prepares it. Then the person in the command vehicle inputs the target coordinates, and the on-board computer calculates the missile operating parameters, which are then transmitted to the missile launcher.
The missile launcher inputs the target coordinates and missile operating parameters into the missile to be launched, and erects the missile into launch preparation status.
Then when the superior's attack order is transmitted to the command vehicle, the people in the command vehicle will press the launch button.
At this time, the missile is ejected from the launch tube, starts the engine in the air, and flies according to the parameters.
At this time, the radar will monitor the flight attitude and transmit the flight data to the missile. The computer inside the missile will fit its own inertial guidance data with the data transmitted by the radar, and then control the rudder to adjust the flight path of the missile so that the missile flies along the predetermined route.
Because it uses a parabolic trajectory, the speed during the ascent phase is actually not very fast. So although the missile range is 300 kilometers, the distance it has to travel is thousands of kilometers, and it takes about 10 minutes from launch to hitting the target.
However, this is calculated based on the maximum range. The closer the target, the shorter the time. However, Wang Jiankun’s operational suggestion for the shortest attack target is not to be less than 50 kilometers, because targets within 50 kilometers can be attacked by other means, and there is no need to use this kind of regional deterrent force.
Another mode is counterattack, which requires radar to capture the opponent's artillery shells or missiles.
This radar is a combination of long-range early warning radar and target guidance radar. Wang Jiankun asked Zhizi to redesign it by combining the radar technology on US aircraft carriers and destroyers. Its functions can be said to be the most advanced in the world.
After the radar captures the flight path of a shell or missile, it will calculate the enemy's position, and subsequent operations are the same as those for dealing with known coordinates.
After the animation demonstration of the ground-to-ground missile was completed, Wang Jiankun stopped to let everyone digest it, then gave a brief review and explained several important nodes in detail.
Next is the animated demonstration and explanation of the K-3 air defense missile.
"As a regional air defense weapon, the K-3 missile is usually deployed near important targets of the enemy, forming a defense umbrella with a radius of 20 kilometers."
While the animation was playing, Wang Jiankun explained the purpose of this missile.
As a weapon for protecting important targets, its position is generally semi-fixed, with launch positions preset near the target to be protected. The radar is also usually turned on to monitor the airspace with a radius of 50 kilometers at all times.
When an enemy aircraft is detected by radar, the entire air defense team must act quickly, start each vehicle and deploy a combat formation. The missile launcher will erect the missile launch tube, and the command vehicle will continuously receive radar data and prepare to import missiles.
Once entering the 30-kilometer absolute defense circle, the target data will be imported into the missile, and then the missile will be in an activated state, waiting for the launch button to be pressed.
Generally, when the aircraft enters about 25 kilometers, the launch button will be pressed, and two missiles will be ejected from the launch tube 5 seconds apart. Then, under the guidance of the radar, the target position will be corrected and the aircraft will fly towards the target.
If the target is a supersonic aircraft, the launch button will be pressed when it approaches 30 kilometers, because 10 kilometers is less than 30 seconds for a supersonic aircraft.
This missile will first rise to an altitude of about 3 kilometers, and then accelerate under the propulsion of its own engine and gravity. The terminal speed can generally reach Mach 5.
At present, it is difficult for all aircraft in the world to escape the attack of this missile as long as they enter the air defense circle. Even if the US military's "Blackbird" reconnaissance aircraft enters the air defense circle, it is difficult to escape the attack of this missile.
The information Wang Jiankun collected from the U.S. military base was that the ceiling of this "Blackbird" reconnaissance aircraft was 3 meters and the maximum flight speed was Mach 3. Under the two maximum data conditions, the aircraft could not perform large maneuvers.
The K-3 missile can perform some maneuvers when it reaches Mach 3.5 at the terminal end, and its speed is slightly faster than the "Blackbird". Therefore, if the US military dares to send this aircraft for reconnaissance in the future, they will definitely be taught a lesson.
After demonstrating and explaining both missiles, Wang Jiankun distributed the prepared test papers and asked the more than 60 soldiers to complete them within half an hour.
Wang Jiankun also did the grading by himself. With the help of projection ability and Zhizi's assistance, Wang Jiankun spent half a minute to grade each test paper.
The entire test paper consists of fill-in-the-blank and short-answer questions, and the content is some key points of the operation process just demonstrated.
These selected soldiers all had a cultural foundation and had been screened, so their IQs were not a problem and they all passed. Wang Jiankun divided them into groups based on their scores.
A combat team requires 4 drivers, 1 commander, and 6 operators. The driver will also take on some other tasks.
A total of 6 combat teams were formed. After the grouping was completed that evening, Wang Jiankun took people from different groups to see their future work positions, and then let everyone go back to rest.
On the morning of July 1982, 7, a thin mist covered the mountain lake. Wang Jiankun got up from the barracks with the soldiers from the previous night, and then washed and did morning exercises together.
The breakfast was quite rich. According to my uncle, the food in the Southern Liberation Army's troops is the best. After all, only with good food can the army's combat effectiveness be guaranteed, and it can also attract more people to join.
After breakfast, Wang Jiankun led everyone into the intense missile test work.
The first test was of air defense missiles, which took place at the air force base.
The target drones were operated by Air Force personnel, who had been using them for enemy training before, so they were already very skilled at flying target drones.
However, this time Wang Jiankun built two target aircraft capable of supersonic flight, with a maximum speed of Mach 2, but it can only be maintained for 2 minutes.
This type of target drone is not easy to manufacture, so it cannot be treated as a disposable item during testing. The missile's warhead will not be detonated when it approaches the target drone. As long as the target drone collects approach data, the attack is considered a success.
Those in the Air Force who often operate target aircraft listened to Wang Jiankun's explanation, and then waited on the side for the order for the target aircraft to take off.
"Air defense drill begins. Group 1, please deploy in battle formation. Quick~."
After communicating with the head of the Air Force Base and confirming the safety of the airspace, Wang Jiankun ordered the first combat team to operate according to the air defense combat procedures.
Since they had only seen the demonstration and had only briefly explored the real object, the first group was a little confused when they performed the actual operation.
Wang Jiankun has been using his super powers to keep an eye on these novices to prevent them from making mistakes. After all, the missile's warhead is real.
Generally speaking, combat deployment should be completed within 3 minutes after receiving the order, but the first team took more than 7 minutes to complete it.
Wang Jiankun couldn't blame them either, because generally speaking, a new equipment requires a relatively long period of training. He only spent half a day letting them practice, so he couldn't blame them for their poor performance.
The reason why Wang Jiankun is so anxious is that it is not easy to stay here for a long time. He is also needed in other places, so he wants to save time as much as possible.
Seeing how these people were in a mess during the actual operation, Wang Jiankun had to put the production of simulated missiles on the agenda. Originally, he didn't want to make simulated missiles.
After the combat deployment was completed, Wang Jiankun ordered the target aircraft to take off and pass over the air defense missile position at subsonic speed, allowing the first group to conduct a simulated attack.
Then came the formal target shooting test. The target aircraft flew to the position from more than 40 kilometers away according to the preset command. After the radar captured the target, the combat alarm sounded and people in various positions began to operate according to the procedure.
After the target aircraft enters the 30-kilometer defense circle, the commander orders the target to be locked, waits for a few seconds, and then orders the shooter to fire.
A white-painted K-3 missile was launched into the air the moment the button was pressed, and then the engine ignited. In an instant, a long tail flame and a large amount of white smoke came out, and the missile flew into the air, dragging flames and white smoke.
Soon the missile was out of sight, with only a trail of smoke to show that it was still climbing.
The radar screen in front of Wang Jiankun showed that the missile began to turn downward after reaching an altitude of 3 kilometers, quickly entering supersonic speed, and then reaching Mach 5, Mach 2, and Mach 3. The engine stopped working at Mach 3.5. The final speed increase was entirely due to the effect of gravity acceleration.
The Mach 3.5 missile quickly approached the target aircraft, and then passed by it about 5 meters behind it. The disturbed airflow actually caused the target aircraft to shake.
At this time, the screen next to it also showed that the target aircraft received a signal that the missile was approaching the preset distance, which indicated that the missile test was successful.
Then another missile was launched, and the target aircraft accelerated to Mach 2, waiting for the K-3 missile to approach.
This pursuit took a little longer. After all, the target aircraft's speed was not much slower than the missile, but it was still rear-ended by the K-3 to a distance of 5 meters.
Then Wang Jiankun asked the second team to test-fire two missiles, attacking subsonic targets and supersonic targets respectively. The two missiles of the second team also successfully eliminated the targets.
All four missiles hit the target, indicating that the missile designed by Sophon can be officially put into service.
Because one launch vehicle can only carry four missiles, it has to be reloaded after launching.
Wang Jiankun asked several combat teams to conduct simulated attacks while he returned to the factory to manufacture missiles.
My uncle had arranged for people to transport a lot of metal elements in overnight, so Wang Jiankun manufactured four anti-aircraft prototypes, 4 K-24 anti-aircraft missiles, and an anti-aircraft vehicle crew (3 vehicles) according to the maximum configuration of these elements.
Then, two surface-to-surface missile prototypes, 2 surface-to-surface missiles, and one surface-to-surface missile vehicle crew (10 vehicles) were manufactured.
After the manufacturing was completed, Wang Jiankun asked everyone to carry four anti-aircraft sample bombs to the exercise site, carry out loading operations, and then familiarize themselves with the simulated attack process.
The launch of the ground-to-ground missile had to wait for my uncle's reply.
Because this missile needs to be tested, a series of coordination along the way is required, and the government forces and northern neighboring countries must also be notified.
This ground-to-ground missile has a parabolic trajectory, with the highest point reaching nearly 200 kilometers. The territory of the Southern Liberation Front is separated from its northern neighbor by a mountain range.
If the missile is launched and flies over an altitude of about 50 kilometers, it will definitely be detected by the long-range radar of the Southwest Military Region, so it is necessary to inform them first to avoid misunderstandings.
As for the southern government forces, let them know that whether they believe it or not, the missile test will definitely be carried out, but their northern military region may not have the ability to detect this missile.
As for Chen's army in the east, they are just waiting for the results of the ground-to-ground missile test. If successful, the Southern Liberation Front will prepare to carry out a decapitation operation against its leaders and cover their bases with ground-to-ground missiles.
This was the plan that my uncle Cen Yong came up with after learning about the performance of this missile. So my uncle was not present during the air defense missile test today. While he was coordinating the establishment of an impact point near Myitkyina, he was also looking for intelligence personnel to keep a close eye on the three main leaders of Chen's army.
Once tonight's ground-to-ground missile test is successful, we will launch a strike against Chen's army tomorrow.
As long as their leader is defeated, the Chen family army will fall apart, and the Nanjie formation will be able to gradually erode the Chen family army's territory.
