Chapter 15: Consequences
Chapter 15: Consequences
About twenty minutes later, Wen Jingyan and Sui Yi arrived after hearing the news. The couple looked anxious and worried as they rushed over. "Wen Qi, how is Zhengzheng?"
Wen Qi got up and went to greet her, taking Sui Yi's hand and saying truthfully, "It's a contusion fracture, especially the toes, which is quite serious. She's currently undergoing surgery inside."
"How could this happen?" Sui Yi's eyes trembled with shock. "Is her life in danger?"
"The doctor said that it is not life-threatening for the time being."
Sui Yi seemed to breathe a sigh of relief and was helped to sit down by Wen Qi. Wen Jingyan frowned and asked, "What exactly happened?"
The theater manager was very perceptive and immediately stepped forward, introducing himself under Wen Jingyan's sharp gaze, "Chairman Wen, I am Qi Yuan, the director of the Wind Chime Theater."
He paused deliberately, but instead of hearing Wen Jingyan's words, he felt the light reflected from those eyes become even more intense.
He could only grit his teeth and briefly recount the events, solemnly reiterating the same promise he had made to Wen Qi.
"Dean Qi, we've known each other for a long time. Now that such a serious accident has happened, I don't need to elaborate on how important legs are to a dancer, do I? Our Wen family will definitely pursue this matter to the end!"
Before Wen Jingyan could react to his words, Sui Yi spoke first.
She was as elegant as ever, but her composure was gone, and her gentle tone carried a clear hint of anger.
"The Fengling Theater has been established for so many years and has never had such a major accident, especially since it involves wire work. Zhengzheng has been rehearsing for so long, and of all days, something went wrong today!"
Sui Yi didn't continue speaking, but everyone present could hear the intriguing implication in her words.
Qi Yuan was startled and raised his hand to wipe the cold sweat from his forehead.
"Don't worry, Teacher Sui, we will definitely conduct a thorough investigation of all theater staff and those who will be performing tonight."
Sui Yi said, "Just call the police directly. Your theater will cooperate with the police investigation."
Although Ruan Zheng was the adopted daughter of the Wen family, she was no different from their own daughter to Sui Yi and his wife.
Moreover, she herself is a national first-class dancer and Ruan Zheng's mentor in classical dance. She herself had to leave the stage due to a leg injury, so she knows very well how important legs are to dancers.
Upon hearing this, Qi Yuan felt there was no need to make such a big fuss and even wanted to offer some words of advice.
But when Ji Xuan met Wen Qi's gaze, he knew that Wen Qi agreed to do so, and immediately took out his phone to call the police.
As a secretary, she was always decisive and efficient, and Qi Yuan couldn't stop her.
Finally, he gave in under Wen Qiying's indifferent gaze.
The police arrived quickly. After understanding what had happened, they were taken back to the theater by two other managers for investigation, while Qi Yuan remained there waiting for Ruan Zheng to come out.
Two hours later, the operating room door opened, and a doctor wearing dark green surgical scrubs came out.
The people waiting outside rushed forward to inquire about the situation.
"The surgery was successful. The patient's right ankle was put in a cast to monitor the recovery. The condition of the toes was more serious, but since the patient is a dancer, we adopted conservative treatment, which involved open reduction and fixation with Kirschner wires. A brace was also put on, and the patient needs to be observed for about 4 to 6 weeks."
Wen Qi asked, "Will that affect her dancing?"
After a moment's thought, the doctor said, "After all, it's a fracture, so it will have some impact, especially on her toes. But what happens next depends on her recovery."
Upon hearing this, Sui Yi's heart sank.
Wen Jingyan noticed her unusual behavior and quickly put his arm around her shoulder, gently patting her hand to comfort her.
Wen Qi also frowned, his expression somewhat solemn.
Everyone knows how much Ruan Zheng loves dancing. Because she started learning dance at a later age, she worked harder than anyone else and cherished and enjoyed every moment on stage.
Sui Yi once said that Ruan Zheng was born to do this job; she was meant to stand on the stage, stunningly beautiful and graceful like a fairy.
But now, on her 33rd birthday, she has received such devastating news.
Let alone how she would react when she woke up, even they found it hard to accept now. Soon, Ruan Zheng was wheeled out. Seeing her pale face, Sui Yi touched it with heartache, and the emotions she had suppressed for so long instantly broke down.
With red eyes and trembling lips, he couldn't say a word.
Upon arriving at the ward, Wen Qi transferred Ruan Zheng to the bed. After the medical staff explained the precautions, the entire ward fell silent.
Ji Xian stood at the foot of the bed, looking at Sui Yi who was guarding the bedside and holding Ruan Zheng's hand tightly, as well as the father and son standing on either side. He could clearly feel their tenderness and affection for Ruan Zheng.
"Are you hungry?"
As if sensing her gaze, Wen Qi looked over, walked to her side, and asked in a low voice.
Ji Xian turned her head slightly and met Wen Qi's deep, dark peach blossom eyes.
The original plan was for them to go back to the old house with Ruan Zheng for dinner after watching the performance.
The incident happened so suddenly that she was busy helping out, and by now it was almost 11 o'clock, and she hadn't even had time to eat.
"It's alright," Ji Xuan said. "If you're hungry, I'll order takeout..."
"No need." Wen Qi squeezed her hand, glanced at the strands of hair stuck to her forehead, and gently brushed them away. "It's getting late, I'll take you back to rest first."
Ji Xian understood that he meant he wanted to take her back and then come over himself.
Ruan Zheng is indeed in a condition where she cannot be left alone; the anesthesia will wear off in two more hours.
She said, "No need for all that trouble, I can go back by myself..."
It was getting late, and he was worried about letting her go home alone, so he casually interrupted, "I'm going back to change my clothes."
Ji Xian didn't know what else to say, so he greeted Wen Jingyan and Sui Yi.
Sui Yi nodded and said softly, "Thank you for your hard work, Ah Xian. Be careful on the road."
"Auntie, you're too kind. This is all within my power," Ji Xuan said. "Please take care of yourselves, Uncle and Uncle."
As she exited the elevator, she called Aunt Zhao and asked her to prepare dinner in advance, and to cook some porridge and soup, which Wen Qi would bring to the hospital later so that Ruan Zheng could eat when she woke up.
On the way back, Wen Qi drove. Whether they were really tired or something else, they were both silent.
When the car arrived at Canglan Residence, Ji Xuan opened his eyes from his drowsy state and walked into the house one after the other.
Aunt Zhao came out of the kitchen to greet them. She noticed the fatigue on their faces, but didn't ask what had happened. She told them to go upstairs to wash up before coming down to eat.
After the two finished washing up, Wen Qi prepared to take the insulated container that Aunt Zhao had packed and leave.
Ji Xuan stopped her, saying, "You didn't eat anything tonight either. Eat something before you go. You can't stay up all night."
Wen Qi glanced back at her, and without hesitation, pulled her hand and sat her down at the table. He picked up his chopsticks, placed a piece of pork rib in her bowl, and said, "Cancel tomorrow morning's schedule."
Ji Xian readily agreed, "Okay."
After the meal, Ji Xuan saw him to the door. "Be careful on the road, drive slowly."
"Okay, you should go to sleep early."
Watching the car drive out of the yard and disappear into the vast night, Ji Xuan slowly withdrew his gaze and it fell on the begonias in the yard.
The image of Wen Qi letting go of her hand, rushing towards the platform, and angrily shouting for an ambulance to the people around him flashed through her mind.
This was the first time she had seen Wen Qi so out of control and flustered.
And the tense and anxious expression he had while waiting outside the operating room was completely different from his usual calm and indifferent demeanor.
