Chapter 315 Jackal
Chapter 315 Jackal
It was obviously fruitless to explain the culture of the humanoid race to the eagles, but neither side delved into it. Ron and the others quickly went down the mountain, following the path indicated by the giant eagles, in order to track down the location of the gargoyles as quickly as possible.
In this area that may not have been visited by anyone for hundreds of years, all kinds of wild beasts and monsters almost blocked the few roads. Ron's team had to spend a lot of time driving them away or clearing them to ensure safe passage.
Take the mud monsters that were specifically mentioned by the giant eagles as an example. When their companions finally escaped from the gathering place of these gel-like creatures, each of them seemed to be covered with a layer of smelly and sticky paste.
"I even have half a piece of undigested skull here!" Yelena "pulled" a piece of broken bone from her body in disgust. "If it were you, Ron, you should just use magic to clean them up! This is too disgusting!"
"It's the same if we use magic to clean it off," Ron casually summoned a stream of water to swirl between his companions, washing away the annoying mucus. "Look at the plants around us. Fireballs or lightning bolts might ignite them, and then it will be a disaster."
Although setting fire to the mountain here would not result in life imprisonment, it would most likely attract the attention of other monsters. Their top priority now was to hurry on their way, and it was better to avoid unnecessary trouble as much as possible.
"I don't like the slime either, but Ron is right," Quest raised his boots and rubbed the slippery gum on the tree trunk. "I don't know if you noticed that there is wind blowing towards us from the creek not far away."
Driver twitched his nose and cautiously took off his short bow: "Something is emitting a bad smell. We'd better be careful."
The hunter's nose was very sharp. When Ron and the others hid their bodies under the cover of the woods and gradually approached the open space by the stream, the sound of water in their ears gradually became louder, mixed with some dog-like barking.
"Is it an animal drinking water?" Yelena was far less interested in the souls of wild creatures than in the souls of humanoid creatures, and her knowledge in this area was quite limited.
She jumped onto a nearby tree as quietly as a leopard and observed the situation by the stream: "It looks like some jackals. They gathered by the water, and some were in the water."
"It doesn't look like this is a creek. The jackals can only show their heads. The water is quite deep."
"Are you sure it's just an animal?" Driver raised his hand and summoned a cloud of fog. At this time, the occasional thick fog by the water in the forest was just a "natural phenomenon" and would not cause excessive alarm. The team hid in the fog, quietly left the woods, and passed through the open space without cover.
If they were sure that they were just ordinary jackals, Ron and his companions would choose to bypass them directly. In broad daylight, no matter how ferocious the beast was, it would not risk taking their entire team as prey. They only had to worry about the second situation - some creatures with jackal heads but human bodies.
That's the real beast.
"Being careful will always pay off..." Ivy whispered softly. Through the fog, when everyone had already brought these creatures within the range of their bows and arrows, there was no longer any debate about their racial affiliation. A creature that was immersing its entire body in water stretched out a limb that was only four points similar to a claw and six points more like a human hand, and wiped the water off its face.
"It's the gnolls!" Driver whispered. "These guys are experienced hunters and robbers second only to the goblins. I suggest we go around them and clear all traces to prevent being tracked."
"Their hunting and attacks are completely random and without warning. If we are targeted, we will have to worry about their harassment for a long time to come!"
"That would be too slow," Quest shook his head. "And remember? Even the giant eagles would go to that cemetery to steal corpses to feed themselves. I'm afraid these gnolls will be no exception. No matter how careful we are, there's no way to guarantee that we won't encounter them."
"My advice is to get rid of most of them right here, while they're still in the water!"
Just as Quest said, most of the jackals had submerged their bodies in the water, leaving only a few jackals walking on four legs on the shore to drink the bath water and guard their weapons. This was indeed the best time to attack them.
A gnoll broke out of the water, raised his hands above his head, and showed off his achievements to his companions: he had caught a delicious salmon. However, gnolls were not a race that understood first come first served, and other gnolls immediately swarmed over. Some dived underwater, trying to believe that they had such good luck; while others simply pounced on the accomplice who had already harvested, trying to directly enjoy the fruits of others' labor.
The chaos came to an end only when a gnoll that was stronger than the others appeared. This gnoll, who looked like the leader, didn't even bother to take action. It stretched out its snout and bit the salmon in the other's hand directly into its mouth.
The jackal who was beaten up by the group for accidentally showing off was naturally unwilling to give up the fish he had caught. However, under the threat from the leader's throat, in order to protect his hands from being bitten off, he could only reluctantly let go and watched helplessly as the meat was swallowed whole by the leader.
The strong hyena who "once again upheld the dignity of the leader" licked his lips contentedly and looked around at his fellow hyenas who lowered their heads because of his gaze, but he did not notice that in the thick fog slowly drifting out from the forest, an arrow enchanted with strong acid was gradually aiming at his heart.
"Ah-"
The goblin hunter's arrow was the order for Ron's entire team to start the attack. When the werewolf leader's gradually darkening sight was still fixed on the arrow that had penetrated his chest, bright lightning had already exploded in the entire stream.
The jackals, who had not yet recovered from the little commotion, were suddenly thrown into chaos. They were frantic and horrified to find that the water, which had been cool and comfortable a moment ago, had suddenly become so numb, with strong electric currents running from their feet to their heads. Those jackals who impatiently tried to climb onto the dry shore to fight back often had their legs stiffened and slipped into the potentially fatal stream, unable to struggle anymore.
The flaming sword in Ivy's hand easily singed the flesh of the jackals on the shore, while Questor wandered along the shore. Those jackals who were lucky enough not to be paralyzed would be beaten with sticks if they got close enough. For a moment, the whole stream was filled with the heart-wrenching howls of injured jackals.
