Chapter 132: Bugbear Woodcarving
Chapter 132: Bugbear Woodcarving
"It seems that Orson Munielper wants to go into the cave, but it doesn't necessarily mean he is afraid of fighting."
Victoria looked at the various rare treasures and magic items piled up around her: "Among these treasures, there may be a trump card that can help him fight to the death."
"It's unlikely," Ron said, holding the weaving foreword and examining each magic item one by one. "These are basically made by wood elf craftsmen. Before moving to the Delusion Land, it is very likely that it swept through the entire wood elf kingdom in the deep forest."
"Take the crown on Exuri's head, for example. It is part of a complete set of magical items: a crown, a cloak, and a scepter. Possessing all three of these items allows the holder to release a spiritual guardian once a day, just like a clergyman."
"It's more symbolic than practical," Exthuri commented. "You won't need it, so I'll give it to you. Oh! I found the scepter. Is it this one?"
It's a pity that Exuri is neither a metallic dragon nor an adult, otherwise it could transform into a humanoid creature and pretend to be a king or something like that. Now it can only hold the crown with its horns and hook the cloak on the spikes on its back.
The dragons naturally had their own tricks for using magic items to cast spells, such as swallowing them whole. However, it was impossible for Axuri to rely on this set of items to show off his majesty as a dragon.
"And the color doesn't match me." After playing with the new toy for a while, the young dragon began to look for other new magical items. "Oh, look at this, a pen with an emerald nib! I bet that green dragon uses it to write in his diary!"
"This is a pen that can write without ink. When you hold it, you can cast spells to confuse manuscripts at will, without the need for any material components." Ron took it. The pen seemed to automatically adapt to the user's body size. When he held it in his hand, the pen quickly shrank, just like a pen that an ordinary human could use.
"You can play with this one," Exuri waved his hand generously, "The gem on the tip of the pen is too small. It's an insult to a rich dragon like me!"
For other races, any magic item might attract them; but for dragons, a useless magic item is not as attractive to them as shiny gems or even colored glass.
"It's really strange," Ivy climbed up the treasure hill and looked into the depths of the treasury. "This guy is a little too lazy. So many gold, silver and jewelry are piled up randomly. Why is there a box in the corner that has not been opened?"
"Maybe he forgot about it," the young black dragon said, not surprised by this. "There shouldn't be anything important in there, so he forgot about it when he was sorting out the treasure."
It was a plain-looking wooden box, about one meter long, half a meter wide and high. As it had been placed in a dark and damp underground, it had become somewhat rotten and moldy over the years. There was a heavy iron lock on the outside of it, but it was also rusty and tattered, and it looked like it could be opened with just one kick.
"I'll do it, I'll do it!" Driver jumped out of the chest-deep gold coins and slid down the hillside made of treasures. "I tell you, my lock-picking skills are first-rate. Watch and learn from me--"
The goblin's voice stopped abruptly. "Driverdo?"
Ron looked up, but found that the goblin was not standing next to the wooden box at all. Instead, he kept reaching out and digging in the mud, looking for something.
"What are you doing? Aren't you unlocking the door?"
"Forget about the lock for now. Look what I found." Driver dug out a wooden sculpture that was more than one meter tall from the soil with great effort. "That green dragon really doesn't know how to appreciate beauty. It actually buried such a wooden sculpture of a beautiful woman in the soil. What do you think it was thinking?"
Ron opened his mouth slightly, staring in amazement at Driver diligently cleaning the dirt off a wooden sculpture. He was not surprised that Driver would be so attentive to a piece of wood, but that the sculpture was... a bugbear? !
How did he recognize that this huge and hairy beast was a beauty!
Moreover, why would a green dragon put such an eye-catching statue in its own treasure house, even if it was covered with soil?
"Driverdo, let go, it might be!" Ivy was the first to react, but the sound was still a little too late for Driverdo.
A thick pseudopod covered in mucus suddenly stretched out from the inside of the wood carving and instantly rolled Driver into sushi. Before anyone could react, the goblin hunter was swallowed whole into the statue, leaving only one of his short leather boots outside.
"Damn, it's a mimicry, I knew it!" Ivy rushed out immediately, and the others also reacted, picking up their weapons and attacking the wooden sculpture that pretended nothing had happened.
This creature is a shapeshifting predator that can transform into inanimate objects to lure prey. It can change its appearance to imitate the texture of wood, stone or other materials, and will transform into objects that other creatures are most likely to approach and interact with. It will then extend its pseudopodia to attack prey that mistakenly enter its hunting range without being aware of its presence.
Generally speaking, the most likely form they would transform into is usually a treasure chest or a door, hence the common name of a treasure chest monster. But this one in front of us obviously did not take the usual path, it turned into the most likely thing for a goblin to approach - a statue of a bugbear!
But it didn't take into account one thing: Driver has teammates who don't buy it!
Although the Mimic realized that it had been exposed, it immediately showed its true form and stretched out its pseudopods to try to fight back. But how could such an ambush predator be a match for the five people and the dragon in a head-on confrontation? Even though it had been forced to spit out Driver to lighten its burden, it was still no match for Ron and the others.
"Stop fighting, stop fighting! I surrender!"
Just as Aik'Zuri's sharp teeth were gnawing on the tough gelatinous skin of the mimic, the young dragon discovered that the food in his mouth actually started talking, and it was speaking the Common Language!
"I was wrong! This was a completely instinctive reaction!" The Mimic screamed and begged for mercy in the mouth of Xuri, "It's still alive, still alive! Oh, do you have to risk your life for a goblin? I won't eat it..."
Ron and the others hurriedly checked on Driver's condition. Just as the strange mimicry said, the goblin was indeed fine except for corrosion and burns on his body. It was just that the sudden shock and the environment inside the mimicry's body caused him to suffocate and faint.
