Chapter 3 High Fever

Xiao Huan is a good cook; including the roasted snake meat, there were two meat dishes, two vegetable dishes, and a soup.

She also made minced meat porridge and steamed smooth egg custard for Yuanyuan. Little Yuanyuan was very satisfied and ate until her little tummy was round.

While Xiao Huan was cleaning up the dishes, Shang Wan and Shi Tou worked together to clean up all the rats in the house and the cellar.

Shi Tou thought Shang Wan's hearing was terrifyingly sharp. No matter where the mouse was hiding, as long as it made the slightest noise, Shang Wan could immediately and accurately find it.

Within half an hour, all of the rat's offspring and grandchildren had perished in the sack.

At Shang Wan's request, Shi Tou, with a blank expression, carried a sack of dead rats to the villagers to exchange for something. Unexpectedly, he actually got two quilts in return, just enough for them to sleep on that night.

Shang Wan and Xiao Huan slept in the main room with Yuan Yuan, while Shi Tou slept alone in the west wing and was responsible for keeping watch at night.

The roof leaked light, the walls let in drafts, and there was a faint musty smell on the blankets; the resting environment was far from comfortable.

But because there were no zombies in this world, Shang Wan slept very soundly, so much so that when someone woke her up in the middle of the night, she almost snapped the person's neck.

Fortunately, she was only confused for less than a second, and when she saw Xiao Huan's face clearly, she subconsciously let go.

Xiao Huan coughed twice, covering her neck, and, disregarding her fear and surprise, said urgently, "Young Madam, Miss has a high fever!"

Her round little face was burning red, but her lips were pale. When she touched her forehead and body, they were burning hot.

"It must be because the young lady couldn't adjust to the sudden change of location and caught a chill last night, which caused her to develop a high fever." Xiao Huan's eyes welled up with tears of heartache as she asked helplessly, "Young Madam, what should we do now?"

Shang Wan gestured for her not to panic, "Go and fetch a small bucket of well water first."

"Okay," Xiao Huan replied and ran out.

Taking advantage of this moment, Shang Wan pried open her round little mouth and dripped a drop of spiritual spring water into it.

"Young Madam, the water is here!" Xiao Huan placed the bucket on the table.

Shang Wan walked over and, while wringing out her handkerchief, secretly dripped a drop of spiritual spring water into the bucket.

"What happened?" Shi Tou was disturbed by the noise of Xiao Huan fetching water. Seeing the light on in the main room, he hurriedly put on his clothes and came over.

Because Shang Wan was inside, he didn't barge in rashly, but stood by the window and asked her questions.

"It's okay, go back to sleep." Shang Wan replied to the outside, her hands moving in turn to test the temperature of Yuan Yuan's palms, soles, back, armpits, and forehead, keenly feeling the burning temperature slowly decreasing.

Just be useful.

Shang Wan breathed a sigh of relief. Seeing that Shi Tou was still standing by the window, she asked him to go to the kitchen to boil some water for Yuan Yuan's bath later.

Without saying a word, Shi Tou went.

By the time everything was finally settled, it was almost dawn.

Shang Wan had dark circles under her eyes and was yawning from exhaustion, thinking to herself that raising a child was really not easy.

Xiao Huan said considerately, "Young Madam, I'll go to the kitchen to prepare breakfast. You can stay and sleep a little longer with Miss."

Shang Wan didn't stand on ceremony. She lay down, hugged the little bundle of joy, closed her eyes, and soon her breathing became even. Yuan Yuan smacked her lips in her arms, her little hands unconsciously gripping Shang Wan's clothes.

Xiao Huan tucked the two of them in, tiptoed out of the house, met Shi Tou's gaze, and pointed towards the outside of the courtyard.

The two walked outside into the courtyard, and Shi Tou asked in a low voice, "How is Miss?"

"The high fever has subsided. As long as it doesn't recur, you should be fine."

"That's good." The young master is still in jail; the young lady can't be allowed to get into trouble.

Shi frowned and said, "Don't you think that the young mistress is like a different person after she hit her head and woke up? Her personality has changed too. She didn't even cry after waking up."

Xiao Huan nodded in agreement.

Not to mention that she took the initiative to help her with chores, just last night, the former young mistress would never have stayed by the young lady's side the whole time, and even personally changed the young lady's handkerchief.

Before being kicked out of the Lu family, the young mistress was only worried about being infected by the young lady's illness. She would never even come to take a look at her, let alone take care of her personally.

“You saw the young mistress kill the snake last night, didn’t you?” Shi Tou gestured to Xiao Huan. “It was such a big snake. I secretly tried to skin it with a dagger last night. I couldn’t do it from that distance, but the young mistress killed it with just a stick about the thickness of a little finger. I wouldn’t believe it if I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes.”

Xiao Huan also recalled the scene from last night. She saw Shang Wan throw the wooden stick out with her own eyes, without even looking out the window when she threw it.

Shi Tou stroked his chin, puzzled, and said, "How could the young mistress, a young lady who can't lift a finger, have such good skills? I never saw it before."

Back in the Lu family, whenever the young mistress was bullied by the first and second wives, she would just cry pitifully like a doormat, completely clueless about how to fight back. If it weren't for the young master protecting her, she probably would have been tormented to death by the madam and the other two wives long ago.

“You know that the young mistress is a shrewd person, and she might have something up her sleeve.” Xiao Huan sighed. “We used to have the Lu family’s protection, but now we’ve been kicked out by them, and the young master is in jail. Miss is still counting on the young mistress. If the young mistress doesn’t stand up for herself, we really won’t be able to live like this.”

Shi Tou felt a lump in his throat. "You stay here and watch over the young mistress and young lady. I'll go to the city to inquire about the young master's case and see how it's going. I'll also look for places to hire helpers and earn some money."

Although I traded a silver hairpin for grain with the villagers yesterday, that little bit of food, if eaten sparingly, will only last for two days at most. I can't just sit here and let it all run out.

Xiao Huan said, "Have breakfast before you go. You'll need energy if you're full."

“Okay.” Shi Tou nodded, leaned close to Xiao Huan and whispered, “After I leave, you must stay with the young mistress every step of the way.”

He emphasized the words "never leave" very heavily. Xiao Huan was taken aback at first, but then realized what he was talking about, and her expression became somewhat complicated.

The young mistress had always disliked the young master's frail health and worried that he would die young, and had long harbored thoughts of having an affair. Stone was worried that the young mistress would abandon her young mistress and run away.

Shang Wan, who was sleeping on the kang (heated brick bed) in the main room, easily overheard the two people's hushed conversation.

In the post-apocalyptic world, human genes have evolved, resulting in significant improvements in all aspects. Shang Wan is an esper, and although her esper ability is not combat-related, her skills are still unmatched by ordinary people.

According to the Great Zhou Dynasty, Shang Wan's current strength is equivalent to that of a martial arts master with profound internal strength.

Yesterday, she deliberately didn't hide her skills, just to see how Xiao Huan and Shi Tou would react.

The reactions of the two were not beyond her expectations. She smiled, gently poked the little bundle of flesh sleeping soundly in her arms, closed her eyes, and truly fell asleep.

Whether it's survival or saving lives, you must first take care of your mental well-being.
