Chapter 89 Reminds Fury
At the Carter Corporation headquarters, at the invitation of Peggy Carter and S.H.I.E.L.D., he once again came here.
“Ms. Carter, are those guys at S.H.I.E.L.D. still not giving up?” Tony asked as soon as he entered Peggy Carter’s office, making his way there with practiced ease.
"Mr. Stark, or should I call you Iron Man?" Before Carter, who was sitting in the main seat, could answer, a voice came from the side.
Tony turned his head and looked, oh dear.
What a dark, marinated egg.
Although it was the first time they had met, Li Wei had mentioned the bald man and eye patch countless times before, so he recognized the man instantly.
Nick Fury, the current director of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Finally, someone in charge has appeared!
Previously, Tony, representing Stark Industries, along with Peggy Carter, had already engaged in two rounds of wrangling with S.H.I.E.L.D.
However, Phil Coulson has always been the only representative of S.H.I.E.L.D.
"Oh, I was wondering why I felt itchy as soon as I came in. Let me guess, you must be that mysterious director of S.H.I.E.L.D., right?" Tony said, scratching his arm in a mock manner.
They were practically ready to call Nick Fury some kind of filthy scumbag.
His words successfully made Nick Fury's forehead throb.
Although I knew Tony Stark was difficult to deal with, I didn't expect him to be this difficult.
“It seems Mr. Stark knows us very well!” Nick Fury said, glancing at Peggy Carter.
“Director Fury, you don’t need to look at me like that. I created the SHIELD confidentiality policy, and I know better than you what can and cannot be said. Besides, I have never told Tony anything about SHIELD.” Facing Nick Fury’s gaze, Peggy Carter calmly added a piece of sugar to her coffee cup.
"Oh, do we really have to talk about this? It seems my father isn't as high-ranking in S.H.I.E.L.D. as he said..." Tony said, feigning surprise.
The two men's sarcastic remarks made Nick Fury feel very frustrated.
And believe it or not, one of the first bureau chiefs was the son of the founder.
In terms of seniority, they are all more qualified than the current director to talk about S.H.I.E.L.D.
"Or should I act surprised by your appearance at this moment, and then you say to me, 'Ah, I am Iron Man. Do you think you are the only superhero in this world? Mr. Tony Stark, you have become a part of the great world, you just don't know it yet!' Something like that?" Tony said, acting as if he were performing a play.
His performance immediately drew a soft laugh from Carter.
How come she never noticed before that Howard's son was so funny?
As for Nick Fury?
Of course, his face was as black as the bottom of a pot—oh, sorry, he was actually blacker than a pot.
But Stark's performance does sound a lot like the rhetoric he uses to recruit exceptional individuals...
It's hard to comment.
“Enough, Mr. Stark. This isn’t drama class time. I’m here to negotiate on behalf of S.H.I.E.L.D.!” Nick Fury disliked the feeling of not having the upper hand.
“Oh, of course, but who do you represent? The US government? The United Nations? Or just your S.H.I.E.L.D.?” Tony asked, shrugging.
“Mr. Stark, you may not yet understand what the appearance of the dragon bone means. No one can guarantee that it is safe for Earth, and we at S.H.I.E.L.D. are authorized by the Security Council to handle such matters!” Nick Fury was not about to answer Tony’s question, which was clearly a trap.
"Look, more of this boring rhetoric. If you invited me here just to say this, then I think we have nothing to talk about. Stark Industries' legal department is actually quite idle; it's a good opportunity for the world to see what kind of organization S.H.I.E.L.D. is!" Tony scoffed. Using power to intimidate? Stark Industries owns numerous media groups worldwide; do you believe we can expose S.H.I.E.L.D. directly?
“Ms. Carter?” Nick Fury looked at Peggy Carter.
“Hey, you young people are always so hot-tempered. Why don’t you talk things out properly? You always have to make a big deal out of it. My old bones can’t take your commotion,” Carter said.
...Old bones? Do you want to see what you're saying?
Nick Fury really wanted to yell at him. "Looking like you now, you could go out and say you're Stark's daughter and people would believe it!"
Tony: Am I that old?
“Mr. Stark, your father dedicated his life to S.H.I.E.L.D.!” Nick Fury sighed inwardly, trying to appeal to his emotions.
"So he died in a car accident, and his death was shrouded in mystery!" Tony scoffed.
How dare you mention his father?
It was one thing for him not to know the truth about his father's death, but the moment he learned it, he was ready to destroy S.H.I.E.L.D.
Playing the emotional card? Living in a dream world?
However, Nick Fury was unaware of Tony's thoughts, because at this point, he was still unaware of the truth behind Howard's death.
He was still secretly regretting his decision when he realized that the relationship between Stark and his son was actually quite bad.
But then I thought about it and it didn't quite make sense.
If the father-son relationship was really that strained, how could Howard have told Tony about the situation at S.H.I.E.L.D.?
That doesn't make sense.
“Director Fury, I think it’s necessary to give Tony an explanation regarding Howard’s car accident back then. After all, besides knowing about his father’s death, he didn’t even see the specific accident report… I don’t think that’s in line with S.H.I.E.L.D.’s rules, is it?” At this moment, Peggy Carter also raised her doubts.
"Really? There's such a thing?" Nick Fury was stunned when he heard Carter say that.
He really didn't know about this.
After all, he wasn't the bureau chief at the time.
Things at Howard's level are not his concern.
If such a thing really exists.
That would explain why Tony dislikes him so much as the director of S.H.I.E.L.D.
“If it’s true, I’ll go back and reinvestigate this matter to give Mr. Stark an explanation,” Nick Fury said, frowning.
“In that case, let’s talk about the dragon bone later!” Tony said.
"Alright! I'll do it as soon as possible! In that case, I won't bother you any longer." Knowing that nothing would come of it today, Nick Fury simply got up and took his leave.
“Why didn’t you just tell him?” Tony asked Carter after Nick Fury left.
Because of Levi, he knew that Nick Fury was reliable in dealing with Hydra.
As for why we didn't mention this matter the previous two times?
Of course, it's because Coulson isn't qualified yet!
At this point, Coulson is merely a Level 5 agent.
Telling him too much will only harm him.
"Because people like him only believe what they find out themselves!" Carter said calmly, sipping his coffee. "If we just tell him, believe it or not, he'll investigate us more than Hydra?"
