Chapter 98 Camping by the Lake
Around three or four in the afternoon, the scorching sun beat down on the earth, and even the wind that blew by was sultry.

Last year, the high temperatures reduced the number of zombies outside, but this year there seem to be none. The virus is powerful; it can keep evolving and mutating.

Seeing the zombies approaching, Song Jinhe, considering that she had just learned to drive a campervan and didn't want to be hit and fall into a ditch, decisively turned the steering wheel to avoid them.

There is plenty of gasoline now, and the air conditioning is on in both cars.

After leaving the service area, the road became less smooth, and since double-decker RVs are inherently slower, they didn't travel very far in that short time.

“There are burned corpses on the road, so there should be other teams ahead of us,” Zhang Yi said, sitting next to us.

Song Jinhe could not deny that all the city roads had been destroyed by the earthquake, and there was only one road to the west.

It's a bit far, but compared to cities teeming with zombies, it's much safer.

"I'm going to check on Qi Sixing. You guys chat." Zhang Yi glanced at Jiang Shi'an behind her, then got up and left.

As the sun sets, the blinding sunlight gradually softens, painting a patch of clouds red at the end of the road.

Song Jinhe took off her sunglasses and looked at the gradually widening and desolate road. She really felt like she was traveling on the road, if it weren't for the incredibly enthusiastic zombies on the roadside.

"There are no houses along this road. Let's find a suitable place to stop later." She looked at the wide meadow in front of her.

“I just checked. The terrain is flatter a kilometer or two ahead, and there’s a grove of trees nearby,” Jiang Shi’an said softly.

Following his instructions, Song Jinhe drove the car into the grassland. The terrain here was different from that of Wucheng, which was low-lying, surrounded by a complex and steep mountain road and dense forest.

The terrain here is high, the vegetation is sparse, and there aren't many wild vegetables to dig up.

The water supply is even less than that of Wucheng.

The two cars, one after the other, slowed down and drove through the grassland and woods until they reached a lake with a wide view.

The last rays of the setting sun spilled onto the lake, creating shimmering, fragmented light.

What stunned them was not the scenery, but the vehicles and campsites parked on the other side.

It looks like it's quite large.

The other party had obviously seen them too, and after a brief silence, several men came out.

They were dressed neatly and clearly lived well.

Song Jinhe considers all such people to be gifted individuals.

"Brother, we were here first."

The young man speaking was wearing a short-sleeved shirt and had a healthy tan. His gaze was fixed on the RV.

We all came from the same road, and everyone knows what's going on at that service station.

They stayed here for three days to prepare for clearing out the service station.

We lost people there before, and we finally made arrangements this time, saying we'd go first thing tomorrow morning, but someone else took it first.

Five people took over the service station?
"This is the only suitable place to set up a campsite nearby."

When Zhuang Ting faced the man, he didn't back down, saying, "This place is so big, no one will get in anyone's way."

It's getting dark. Will they leave? If they leave so easily, the other side will think they're easy targets and might try to steal their supplies.

The two sides haven't reached a life-or-death situation yet, and neither side has figured out the other's strengths and weaknesses, so the other side won't easily make a move.

"Can't you understand human language?"

As soon as a hot-tempered young man stepped forward, he was glared back by the leader.

“That applies to you too,” Zhuang Ting shrugged.

The leader's gaze swept over them; three men and two women, they didn't seem to have suffered much hardship. "Where are you from? How long do you plan to stay?"

"I don't know how long I'll stay in Lianyungang County, it depends on the situation," Zhuang Ting said in a nonchalant tone.

"Are you also going to Los Angeles?" the man smiled and suggested, "This place looks desolate, and we might encounter zombies at night. We're all in the same boat here."
How about this, we can stay close together on one side, so if anything happens, we can both find out immediately. We might even need to travel together for the rest of the journey; we have a few groups that have already teamed up with others along the way.”

That sounds quite nice at first glance.

Keeping them under his nose, only he knows his true purpose.

The other party brought it up because they were certain they wouldn't refuse.

"Where did you come from?" Zhuang Ting also asked.

"Yuecheng escaped during the earthquake."

The man noticed Zhuang Ting glance back, and the indifferent-looking man in the shirt next to him nodded before he gave an affirmative answer.

Interestingly, the person who actually makes the decisions for this team is this guy who looks like a pretty boy.

Standing next to him was a girl with an innocent-looking face, whose white skin seemed to glow in the gradually darkening night.

People like this can live so well outside, either because they have some skills of their own or because they have powerful backers.

After reaching a consensus, the other party led their people towards the camp, and Song Jinhe and his group also chose their locations.

It was right next to the other person, neither too far nor too close.

"Ninth Brother, why did you let those people stay?" Yi Feng, with his quick temper, couldn't help but ask halfway through.

“We had all agreed to take that RV, but now it’s theirs.”

Tan Jiu glanced at him. "You know that those five people took over the service station."

"Do you think we're afraid of them?" Yi Feng sneered.

Even if those five people were all gifted individuals, they wouldn't be afraid.

"I'm not afraid, and there's no need to fight," Tan Jiu replied. "They don't seem to have any intention of making a move, so why should we provoke trouble and waste our own strength?"

In the campsite surrounded by several vehicles, some people were cooking over a fire, and others were hanging clothes to dry. It was clear that the area was divided into several sections, as could be seen from the tents and supplies.

Just as Tan Jiu said.

A black SUV is parked in the best position for visibility, with a chassis that is higher than that of a regular SUV.

The equipment and personnel in this area were in the best condition, and the steaming food in the pot drew envious glances from many people nearby.

"Brother Su, there are only five people over there. They'll set up camp on the side." Tan Jiu looked at the man sitting in front of him on a folding chair, wearing white casual pants.

“It would take five people more than a day to loot the service area. In total, they took it over not long after we arrived.”

Speaking of this, Yi Feng felt aggrieved.

"If it weren't for the huge horde of zombies following us when we passed the service station, making it impossible for us to stop and clear it out, we would have taken it too."

Two-thirds of the zombies that came out of Yuecheng followed them. How long did it take to clear them out, and what was the result?

It benefited someone else.

“There’s no use talking about this now.” The man called Brother Su smiled and put down his binoculars. “Let’s take a look at the background of this group first.”

With the RV in place, Song Jinhe and his team didn't need to make many arrangements. They just needed to use a string to thread soda cans through the back to create a warning device.

The internet went down in my area this evening, so I'm taking a day off. I'll only be posting 2 words today.
