Chapter 4 Hospital 3
Song Jinhe did not hide anything, "At that time, I took advantage of the chaos to hide in the closet. I had no choice but to risk running out."

Zhang Yi shared some food with Song Jinhe. Although the mother and son were not very happy, they didn't say anything, since the food was brought by Cheng Yan and the others.

The sky outside the window gradually darkened, and the torrential rain that had lasted for more than half a month finally stopped, and the atmosphere in the room also became quiet.

There was only one single bed, where the middle-aged woman's son, who was in his early twenties, was sleeping. Nobody bothered to fight over it, so they pushed chairs together or simply slept on the table to make do with their rest.

Every minute of the night felt incredibly long. The roars and the scraping of fingernails against the door never stopped, as if the horde of zombies were about to burst out and tear their bodies apart at any moment.

The first person to awaken their talent would die if they went out alone at night without firearms and encountered three or more zombies, let alone an ordinary person.

Song Jinhe was so sleepy that she closed her eyes and slept for a while.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the city.

Bright lights accompanied a cold, electronic countdown timer.

Outside the tidy office, chaos reigned. Black blood soaked through confidential documents, and zombie corpses lay scattered about.

In the adjacent sealed laboratory, several zombies wearing white lab coats and name tags around their necks were pressed against the special glass and howling.

[Energy level in Zone C is below 5%, non-essential equipment will be automatically shut down soon!]

[Energy in Zone B is less than 1%]

The man sitting in the office slowly removed the gold-rimmed glasses from his nose, took off his white coat, and neatly hung it in the closet, followed by his name tag.

His name was written under the neatly arranged photo—Jiang Shi'an.

The lab will shut down in 3 minutes and enter self-destruct mode.

His expression was too calm, especially in contrast to the roaring zombies outside and the empty laboratory.

The flashing lights outlined the delicate and smooth lines of his features, as well as his dark and deep eyes. He was calm as if today was just an ordinary day, and the countdown on the wall, which lasted less than two minutes, was just the end of the workday.

However, this highly classified underground research institute is about to cease to exist, just like the vanished civilizations outside.

He opened the drawer, skillfully assembled the pistol inside, and after a moment's hesitation, put his work badge and pen into his pocket.

Then he picked up the half-person-high briefcase with one hand and walked out of the office.

Drip—drip—

The countdown has jumped to 50 seconds.

Gunshots rang out, and the lights behind them suddenly went out.

-

The next day, as dawn was breaking.

Shen Wu's anxious expression concealed a hint of ruthlessness.

He recalled the scene from a few days ago, where those two old geezers were being torn apart by zombies while shouting his name.

Before the apocalypse, those two old geezers spent so much money on their illnesses, and all that money was supposed to go to him. Every bit of his money was used, and then there was less of his. After the apocalypse, they even tried to drag him down with them, to take him with them to die.

Back then, I could abandon my burdensome parents; now, I can choose one of these people to push away.

He also had a small fruit-peeling knife hidden in his pocket.

He'd take the opportunity to kill Cheng Yan, and then he'd be in charge here. He'd been fed up with this idiot for a long time; he'd disliked these money-grubbing doctors even before the apocalypse.

The zombies outside the door did not leave. Song Jinhe silently took out two glass bottles from the cabinet and cut up the clothes that had been wrapped around her arms yesterday.

Cheng Yan opened his mouth, "What are you doing?" "This door doesn't look like it will hold for long. We'd better leave before the rain stops. Do you have a lighter?"

Song Jinhe took the lighter handed to her by Peng Zhixue. "I looked at the things here and found I can make two simple Molotov cocktails."

"You can even make Molotov cocktails? What exactly do you do?" Peng Zhixue looked at Song Jinhe again, his eyes filled with curiosity.

"If I learn some math, physics, and chemistry, I'll understand," Song Jinhe made up an excuse.

These are all memories from the three years of struggling in the apocalypse. She was a liberal arts student who had even taken a break from school due to health issues. How could she possibly excel in math, physics, and chemistry?

I do know a little bit about traditional handicrafts; I learned it during my free time while on leave from school.

“My car is parked 400 meters away, with dozens of zombies loitering in between.” Cheng Yan paused. “Are you sure the Molotov cocktails you made are okay? This isn’t a video game.”

Song Jinhe picked up a Molotov cocktail and gave one to Cheng Yan, just in time to avoid Shen Wu's hand that was reaching for something. "No problem, I can go out first."

"Xiao Cheng, it's not that I'm unwilling to help, but look at me." Jiang Hongrong stepped forward, looking at Cheng Yan with difficulty, her tone earnest.
“Your teacher, Dr. Zhou, has known me for over ten years. You know my situation. I’m a patient and can’t run fast. My son doesn’t understand anything and will only hold you back.”

“How about this, we’ll follow behind, and you can drive us up first. We’re an orphan and a widow, and we depend on each other for survival. You can’t just abandon us. Once we get to the shelter, I’ll find someone I know to make arrangements for you all.”

Their car was in the underground parking lot and couldn't be driven because it had been flooded. Cheng Yan's car couldn't even fit so many people in the trunk, so she had to make sure that she and her son went up first.

As for who will take care of these people once they arrive at the shelter.

Cheng Yan subtly indicated that he himself might not even survive, and couldn't guarantee the safety of the mother and son. His son was so big and needed someone else to protect him; he wasn't a bodyguard.

"I'm not doing this for your own good, because I don't want to hold you back." Jiang Hongrong didn't get the answer she wanted, and a hint of displeasure flashed across her face.

Cheng Yan was willing to open the door and let people in, so how could he not be responsible for her safety as a patient? He has absolutely no medical ethics.

Shelter?

Upon hearing the keyword, Song Jinhe secretly shook her head. Just like the place where the survivors gathered in the hospital before, the appearance of a single zombie would be a devastating blow.

The earliest zombies weren't bitten; no one knows the origin of the zombies—they suddenly died from a fever and then revived.

This situation did not occur after the first phase, but the survival rate was still less than 30%.

While they were talking, Song Jinhe used strips of cloth, a baseball bat, and a badminton racket, along with alcohol, to make two makeshift torches.

Click, click,

The sound of the doorknob turning wildly sent chills down everyone's spines.

"The zombie can open the door!" Cheng Yan's eyes widened.

"There's no time left." Song Jinhe, clutching a Molotov cocktail, pushed open the window and climbed out.

The door was smashed open a crack by the zombies, and Jiang Hongrong, who had just said she couldn't run anymore, climbed up the window and moved with incredible speed.

There are quite a few zombies outside, especially at the intersection.

"What should we do, Xiao Cheng? They're coming! Think of something quickly!" Jiang Hongrong urged from behind.

Song Jinhe looked at Cheng Yan, "Give me some time, I can lure them away."

“Okay.” Cheng Yan accepted Song Jinhe’s makeshift torch without hesitation.

Song Jinhe lit the first Molotov cocktail and smashed it into the pile of zombies.

Flames shot out instantly.
