Chapter 22 The Long Night

“Since that storm, the environment and climate have been changing.” Jiang Shi’an glanced at him. “In a situation like this, I need your talent to help me.”

Song Jinhe ate her noodles in large mouthfuls, her tone doubtful, "You trust me that much?"

The darkness provided her with a perfect opportunity to backstab him.

"Why don't you believe me? If I die, can you leave alive on your own?" Jiang Shi'an's lips curled slightly as he looked at Song Jinhe's right hand.

Of course, he wasn't completely unprepared.

After finishing their meal, the two returned to the second floor and used the string and empty bottles they found in the tavern to set up warning lines on the stairs, ensuring that any zombies would hear them when they came in at night.

There is a room at the very back of the second floor, which used to be the tavern owner's residence. It has only a bed and a sofa.

Song Jinhe slept cautiously in the car for two days. The sofa was fine with her too, as long as she could sleep on it.

But Jiang Shi'an told her to go to bed, saying that not getting enough rest would affect her performance, and she didn't refuse.

“There’s water in the bathroom for washing up, but it’s cold,” Jiang Shi’an said, looking at Song Jinhe.

"Where did the water come from?" It hasn't rained for days.

"You wanted to know about my talent, right? That's how it came about."

Song Jinhe paused. She hadn't said anything. How did she find out? Was her probing too obvious?

Entering the bathroom, Song Jinhe took out the hot water she had boiled at the bathhouse earlier, mixed it into the basin, and made sure it was just warm to the touch. She had to use the hot water sparingly.

It was inconvenient to wash with one hand, and it took her quite a while to finish tidying up.
Standing in front of the mirror, Song Jinhe couldn't help but sigh. It felt so good to be clean and refreshed. For the past two days, she felt like she was being pickled by the stench of a corpse.

The room was unusually quiet after the lights were turned off at night. The sounds of the zombies were only separated by a wall, and occasionally the sound of fingernails scratching could be heard. Song Jinhe's hand wounds throbbed with pain, and she was woken up by the pain several times when she was about to fall asleep.

Feeling the other person's even breathing, even though they were not familiar with each other and were wary of each other, brought a strange sense of comfort in the dead of night, amidst the zombies.

At least you're not spending the night alone.

-

Song Jinhe woke up with her eyes still closed and immediately checked her surroundings. No zombies had entered the house, and another person was sitting peacefully on the sofa.

Then, she opened her eyes and found that it was still pitch black. She clearly felt that she had slept for quite a while, and her wristwatch showed that it was 9:03 a.m.

For a moment she thought she had gone blind, and she waved her hand in the air twice. When she came to her senses, she realized that it was still dark.

There was a street full of zombies outside.

Song Jinhe got out of bed and walked to the sofa, whispering, "There are two screaming zombies walking this way. They are very sensitive to the smell of food."

"Have you ever encountered this kind of zombie?" Jiang Shi'an cut to the chase.

“Yes, I encountered one in the city, and it was very troublesome.” Song Jinhe frowned.

Jiang Shi'an paused for a moment. He had long known that special individuals would appear among the zombies, as the chimerism of the virus and genes was constantly changing.

I stayed in the city to look for these zombies, but I haven't encountered any yet.

"Besides being sensitive to smells, what other characteristics do they have?"

"Faster reaction speed, can summon companions, it's basically a pro version of a regular zombie." Song Jinhe looked around, "This place shouldn't be so easy to find."

Not knowing how long the night would last, Song Jinhe could feel how terrifying the situation was with zombies crossing the area, which made her restless.

If they were discovered by zombies, she, an injured person in such a place, would have no chance of survival relying solely on her sensory abilities.

At three o'clock in the afternoon, the sky was just beginning to lighten before falling back into darkness. Unable to go downstairs, Song Jinhe shared her bread with Jiang Shi'an. At nine o'clock in the evening, she noticed a zombie that had accidentally bumped into the door downstairs, and her breath caught in her throat.

ten o'clock.

boom!
The sudden sound from the window startled Song Jinhe.

“There’s something outside, quite large, and numerous…” She hadn’t finished speaking.

Crash—the glass shattered, and a dark shadow flew in, scraping past them.

"It's a bat." Song Jinhe dodged the creature's attack by stepping back.

Normal bats don't grow this big; it looks like it's 30 centimeters long!
It also had a strong smell of blood and a strange stench of decay, and pus was oozing from its fur.

Several more flew in, and under the cover of darkness, they spread their wings, revealing yellow teeth, and attacked the two humans inside the house.

"It's hanging right behind you, quickly bend down!" Song Jinhe picked up the blanket and covered her head, wrapping herself up tightly.

This thing looks like it's covered in viruses!

Upon receiving the warning, Jiang Shi'an quickly dodged to the side, his dagger plunging into the mutated bat's body. It flapped its wings, struggled frantically, and crashed heavily into the corner of the wall.

The scattering bats crashed into the furnishings inside, and the noise they made still attracted the attention of the zombies outside.

A series of piercing screams, accompanied by slapping and scratching sounds, drew more and more zombies toward the house.

Song Jinhe used her serpentine movements to retreat to Jiang Shi'an's side. "There are still quite a few bats outside. The cabinet below... is directly in front of you!"

Jiang Shi'an twisted his wrist and slashed the bat's right wing across its body with his knife, causing a foul-smelling liquid to spray out.

He was just about to tell Song Jinhe to stand behind him so she wouldn't get hurt in the process.

Turning his head, he saw Song Jinhe turn on the emergency light. She quickly pulled her hand back under the blanket as if she had been burned, clenching it tightly from inside. Only half of her face was visible as she looked at him. Her self-protection measures were quite thorough.

As the dying bat rose, she slapped it to the ground with a hammer in her left hand, then shrank back under the covers.

They're pretty good at hiding their true nature.

Jiang Shi'an withdrew his gaze, took out a pistol from his waist, released the safety, pulled the trigger, and shot down the two bats that were flying through the air.

Even with a silencer, firing a gun will still make a sound, but since they've already been spotted by zombies, it doesn't matter whether they fire or not.

Song Jinhe threw off the blanket and helped Jiang Shi'an temporarily block the hole in the window with tables and chairs.

With a loud crash, the door below was smashed open halfway, and zombies rushed in one after another, quickly surging up the stairs.

The bottles that had been placed beforehand shattered, and Song Jinhe smashed two more bottles. When she couldn't stop it any longer, she had no choice but to set it on fire.

The first to rush in was a screaming zombie, which was shot three times in the head before it died.

The crackling sounds and the acrid smell of burning grease lingered in the air.

There were too many zombies. Even if they were burned, they wouldn't die immediately. Instead, they would rush towards people with flames. No matter how skilled Jiang Shi'an was at using a gun, it would still take time to reload.

They fought as they retreated towards the skylight, where the emergency lights could no longer reach.

Seeing the disheveled, bloodshot-eyed zombie about to grab Jiang Shi'an's arm, Song Jinhe stepped forward without hesitation and stabbed it.

Her hand was in excruciating pain, and that one strike hadn't completely killed the zombie; the knife had even been flung away. She stepped forward again, gripping the zombie's head tightly with her left hand, and then plunged the knife into the zombie's eye socket with her right.
