Apocalyptic Disaster: Stockpile Supplies for Free and Make a Comeback
Chapter 138 The Base's First Sumptuous Dinner
Chapter 138 The Base's First Sumptuous Dinner
Savory dishes are easy to make; she has lots of seasonings in her online space.
The coconut milk is really out of stock, and there's no way to find any unexpired replenishment outside. Every little bit we eat reduces the supply.
Half of a chicken is used to make soup with red dates and goji berries, while the other half is coated with flour and breadcrumbs to make fried chicken.
The portions are only enough for a small treat, but it's already a blessing that everyone can sit down at the same table to eat. It's been a long time since we had this meal.
"Just one last vegetable soup, then we can eat!" Cheng Yan called out from the kitchen.
Zhang Yi and Qi Sixing set out the bowls and chopsticks. Song Jinhe's big pot of rock sugar mung bean soup was too hot, so they had to put it in the refrigerator later and eat it tomorrow.
The bird's nest was just taken off the stew pot, then honey was added, and it was portioned out according to the number of people.
"Wow, this feels like Chinese New Year," Qi Sixing exclaimed, looking at the food already on the table. "I've never even eaten bird's nest before the apocalypse."
"I found several boxes last time, and I just stewed some when I saw them. I've been traveling a lot lately, so I'll have some of the good stuff I can find."
Just as everyone was about to take their seats, a handbell rang outside the door. It was Gu Huai who arrived, carrying a potted cactus with two newly planted leaves.
The aroma of chicken soup wafted through the air as soon as I entered. I had been worried that there wouldn't be enough supplies here, but it turns out they're living so well.
Fresh meat and freeze-dried vegetables are rare finds at the base.
"Would you like to sit down and have some dinner together?" Song Jinhe stepped aside to make way for her.
"Okay." Gu Huai didn't stand on ceremony and walked to the dining table to make room for him.
He took the bowl and chopsticks, watching Jiang Shi'an serve soup to Song Jinhe with a spoon.
He sighed inwardly, thinking that even if he had been beaten to death before, he would never have believed that Brother Jiang could be so considerate; it would be more likely that he would personally put the medicine into the soup.
"How did you manage to preserve all these things after coming all the way from the west?" Gu Huai asked in surprise.
"Vacuum freezing," Jiang Shi'an said without changing his expression.
Gu Huai nodded. Their RV had solar panels and a refrigerator inside.
The meal was very enjoyable; the chicken soup was so fragrant that he felt dizzy. They even added Chinese medicine. Medicines were scarce at the base, and even if he wanted to get some to make soup, he couldn't drink it often.
Last time, Jiang Ge ate the good food himself, but when we made him eat steamed buns, his wife was the more reliable one.
I heard that he has elders in his family, so I gave them some bird's nest and a bottle of honey.
These things are even more precious in the apocalypse, since most people are already lucky if they can eat instead of being eaten by zombies.
"Others are out there trying to survive, but you're out there trying to survive in the wild?" Gu Huai asked.
He even suspected that they had come from the western route as tourists in RVs.
“We’re professionals at zero-yuan purchases.” Qi Sixing’s expression at this moment was exactly the same as Zhang Wei’s professional team.
Gu Huai:
After saying goodbye to Gu Huai, they closed the door and worked together to clear the dining table before dividing up the rooms.
The second floor has three rooms: two large and one small. The small room is a study, and there is also a sofa bed in the attic.
“Jinhe and I live here,” Zhang Yixian said.
“Then I’ll stay here too.” Qi Sixing raised his hand and said first, “I live in the attic, and the little bed by the window makes me feel very safe.”
The remaining three people had no choice but to stay in the next room, which was just enough.
Zhuang Ting chose a room on the inside, with its window facing Zhang Yi's window.
The two villas are very close together; if anything happens, a shout from the window can be heard. At night, there are guards and patrols at all entrances and exits of the base, and alarm systems are also in place.
The villa area is home to the base's management, key personnel, and their relatives, making them a priority for protection.
Keeping watch in the house again wouldn't do any good, but Song Jinhe and the others couldn't sleep very well.
The base was still an unfamiliar place for them, and they never completely let down their guard.
When the surroundings returned to quiet, standing under the shower and feeling the warm water on my body, I still felt a little unreal.
Song Jinhe changed into a breathable and comfortable loose nightgown. When she was outside, she had to wear clothes that could run or fight at any time, so she rarely had the chance to wear these comfortable ones.
She took out everything else she didn't have, but hung two pieces of clothing in the closet as a token gesture.
Jiang Shi'an was much more organized in tidying clothes and sheets than she was; she only cared about making them look presentable, regardless of whether they were asymmetrical or not.
At the dinner table, Gu Huai told her a lot about Jiang Shi'an's past, saying that he had never even held a girl's hand before. The mixed-race school beauty approached him under the guise of asking for advice, but he said that her experimental data was not rigorous and she couldn't even culture cells or anything like that properly. He didn't have time to help with meaningless things.
She thought to herself that if this were a school in a peaceful and prosperous era, someone like her, who failed math and science, would probably never have any interaction with him.
After turning off the lights, Song Jinhe tossed and turned in bed.
The environment is so comfortable that I'm afraid to sleep soundly.
"Can't sleep?"
"A little." Song Jinhe turned around and looked at Jiang Shi'an's profile. "Did I disturb you?"
“No,” he asked softly. “Is the Los Angeles base a place you want to stay?”
Song Jinhe thought for a moment, "I don't know, but this place is indeed a good place to survive right now, safer than outside."
"Back in Wucheng, you said you wanted to live well in the apocalypse. If you didn't want to participate in the base's work, then you didn't have to. I'll handle it. As long as I'm here and still alive, I won't downgrade our treatment."
His voice seemed exceptionally clear in the quiet night.
The faint light from the streetlights outside shone through the gaps in the curtains, falling on Jiang Shi'an's well-defined fingers, as if coating them with a warm glow.
Song Jinhe propped her head up, gazing at his delicate face, a clear smile on her lips.
"If I didn't have talent or the ability to fight, I would be a survivor who couldn't kill zombies, couldn't fight, and had no ability to survive in the apocalypse."
"A talented individual who can follow me, protect me, and whose looks and physique don't put me at a disadvantage, is definitely the best option for survival in the apocalypse. Otherwise, I'll have to choose to become a zombie."
“Talent will stagnate if not used, and the space will not upgrade, so you need to participate in the base’s work.”
She had never mentioned before that her space could be expanded by killing zombies.
But given how much time they've spent together, with Jiang Shi'an's keen observation skills, he probably already knew that her spatial capacity could increase. If he thought about it further, he would understand why.
"Mmm." Jiang Shi'an responded softly, reaching out to put his arm around Song Jinhe.
Song Jinhe found a comfortable position in his arms and closed her eyes.
Nine o'clock in the evening is the time when the factory dormitory where ordinary survivors live is cut off from power. Drawing the curtains can provide some dim light.
Looking at it from this angle, the entire area is pitch black except for the lights on the ground that are convenient for security work.
The temporary shelter area not far away was even darker, with no lights for the survivors waiting for their turn; only the lights from the watchtowers and defensive lines shone from the surrounding area.
