Chapter 13 Unfamiliar Faces
I slept for more than an hour in a half-awake state. My temperature dropped slightly at five o'clock in the morning, but the buzzing sound was still lingering in my ears.

Song Jinhe struggled to put on her coat and a mask before finding Cheng Yan. "It reached a high of 41.1, and now it's 39. I took the medicine last night, but it didn't work."

Cheng Yan took the thermometer, looked at the obvious red blood vessels in Song Jinhe's eyes, and said in a heavy tone, "I have never seen an infected person with a fever of 40 degrees Celsius who thinks as clearly as you."

They know too little about the zombie virus; in fact, they don't have time to learn.

"You should rest for a few more hours and then observe for a few more hours."

"Well, thank you."

Song Jinhe took her medicine again, and when she woke up again, Zhang Yi brought her some freshly cooked porridge.

Hearing faint crying outside, Song Jinhe asked, "Wu Dayong and the others who went out yesterday haven't come back?"

Zhang Yi paused for a moment, then nodded. "Their families are asking and want us to help them go out and look for them."

Song Jinhe took the stainless steel lunchbox and knocked loudly on the door.

“They only went out because you told them there were supplies in the mall. Now that something has happened, you’re just hiding inside and doing nothing? Open the door! If something happens to my husband, how are we, a widow and her children, supposed to survive?”

"Xiao Song, this is Sister Zhou. What do you need to go out and find someone? We can discuss it. Can you open the door?"

“Sister Tian, you should know how dangerous it is outside,” Cheng Yan said. “No one can guarantee that nothing will happen, and we have no obligation to help!”

This was the first time Cheng Yan had spoken so bluntly, leaving everyone who was used to his good-natured side speechless.

"Sister Tian, how can you blame Cheng Yan and the others? They don't owe you anything." Qiu Ling stepped forward and said, "We were able to bring back food yesterday thanks to Cheng Yan's information, otherwise we would have been starving today."

Seeing that no one around her spoke up for her, Tian Hui left, looking helpless and crying.

Finally, peace and quiet returned. Song Jinhe leaned against the bed and closed her eyes. "You can go out now. I'll take care of lunch myself, so you don't need to bring me any."

Zhang Yi shook her head. "You need people here. If there are any problems, I can notify Cheng Yan immediately. Brother Peng will take care of cooking."

Seeing Zhang Yi's serious expression, Song Jinhe felt a little conflicted. "Aren't you scared? I might suddenly turn into a zombie like those people in the hospital."

Zhang Yi was silent for a moment. "I thought I was going to die in the hospital. Before the signal was cut off, I called my family and all I heard was their screams and them telling me to find a place to hide and not to go home. The day before I was here, my mother died of cancer in her hospital bed."

As she spoke, she forced a smile, "I only saw hope when we escaped the hospital together. If something had happened to you, I wouldn't be able to face this world alone."

"Joining the zombie army, growing stronger, and chasing after others to devour is better than being left with just a skeleton." Song Jinhe opened her lunchbox and said softly, "I thought about this for a day and a night while I was in the closet."

But a healthy body and life are too precious for her.

In her original world, her parents divorced respectably when she was young and remarried. Neither of them wanted her, but they never lacked money for her. Even with her congenital heart disease, she couldn't be a burden to anyone.

As for this parallel world, apart from not being born into wealth and having no physical problems, everything else is pretty much the same.

While in the hospital, she tried calling her parents, but one call went unanswered, and another was made from the opposite side of the road leading to the shelter, followed by silence after a piercing sound.

"What are you dawdling for? Hurry up!"

"Okay, okay." Wu Dayong shrank his neck and walked cautiously at the front.

A hoarse roar suddenly erupted from the dark and cold fire escape. Upon closer inspection, a group of zombies emerged from a side passage, their clothes tattered and their expressions hungry. Everyone's pupils widened in shock.

"You son of a bitch, are you deliberately leading us into a zombie horde!" the axe-wielding man roared, grabbing Wu Dayong by the collar with one hand and raising his axe with the other.

"No! We don't have any, really!" Wu Dayong explained, his face pale and his body trembling. "We're right here, how could we dare to go to a place with zombies? There were no zombies here when we came, and I don't know where they came from."

The axe-wielding man scrutinized Wu Dayong. Seeing that his terrified eyes seemed genuine, and thinking that he was still useful, he released him. At the signal from the burly leader, he turned around and chopped the bespectacled Fang Liangao on the neck with his axe.

"what!!!"

Screams sounded.

Bright red blood splattered onto Wu Dayong and Cao Ji's faces instantly. They were terrified and watched as the axe-wielding man kicked Fang Liangao toward the zombies.

The smell of blood made the zombies even more frenzied. They pushed and shoved forward, eagerly digging open Fang Liangao's body and tearing at his internal organs.

Wu Dayong and Cao Ji hurriedly followed the burly man and his group of men as they ran outside. When they stopped, the way they looked at each other had changed.

Only one person is needed to lead the way. If this situation happens again, one of them will die. If they don't want to die, they have to take the initiative and push the other person out to be eaten by zombies.

In this state of mutual wariness and high tension, Wu Dayong and Cao Ji led the strong men a little further, and the strong men dealt with any stray zombies they encountered.

"It's that door in front." Wu Dayong was both frightened and somewhat ingratiating.

He had told his wife to be by the door to open it for him when he came out, and she dared not disobey him.

The burly man pulled out a pistol, pointed it at Wu Dayong's head, stepped aside, and gestured for him to knock on the door.

Wu Dayong nodded, composed himself, and stepped forward. "We're back! Open the door!"

Tian Hui was turned away by Cheng Yan, so she took her child outside and asked for help, hoping that someone would help her find the person for the sake of the child.

Who would be willing to do something so dangerous? After asking around, Tian Hui looked at the tightly closed iron gate, cursing Song Jinhe and the others, and wondering where her husband had gone, venting her worries and fears in this way.

Wu Dayong's wife, Shen Yingxiu, stood to the side with tears welling in her reddened eyes, not saying a word.

Suddenly, a familiar voice came from behind the door. Shen Yingxiu's expression froze, and she couldn't tell whether she felt relieved or regretful.

"Open the door! Shen Yingxiu, what are you doing!" Wu Dayong pounded on the door, urging him on, his fierce tone tinged with tension.

Shen Yingxiu instinctively flinched, and Tian Hui rushed over to move the tables and chairs, put down the latch, and opened the door, only to see Wu Dayong, Cao Ji, and a group of unfamiliar faces.

Tian Hui's excited expression turned cold. She had realized something, but still asked with a glimmer of hope, "Where is our Lao Jiang?"
