Chapter 6, Section 6: Zhang Su

Chapter 6, Part 6: Retrospection
At 2:00 AM, Yingchuan City Security Bureau.

Yang Guan's eyes gleamed with blue light.

In his eyes, a three-dimensional space was displayed, which was the crime scene when they rescued the hibernating people.

The hibernating man, Sog, leaned against the wall, unconscious, gun in hand. On the other side of the wall, to which his toes pointed, lay the corpse of a gray-haired man.

Five meters away from the gray-haired man lay the dead monk and doctor.

In this image, the direction of the blood splatter, the traces of footsteps, and the undamaged fingerprints are all highlighted.

Immediately afterwards, as if time were rewinding, the frozen scene began to play in reverse.

The gun in Suger's hand fell back to the ground, then flew back into the gray-clad man's hand. The blood splattered on the walls and the ground also floated up, gathered into a stream, and poured into the gray-clad man's neck.

Scattered bits of flesh and brain tissue flew over, and the gray-clad man's head was restored to its original state. The gun in his hand was now pressed against his chin.

"suicide."

Yang Guan uttered two words.

The footage then flashed back to show the actions of the gray-clad man and his two accomplices during their fight.

The blue light in his eyes faded only after he had watched the whole thing.

"You've finally finished reading."

Bai Miao sat on the maglev chair, idly swaying for quite a while. She was used to having her brain-computer interface replace most of the work of her biological brain; the video that took Yang Guan twenty minutes to watch, she only took less than half a second.

The brain-computer interface does the thinking for her; she only needs to receive the answers.

"It's internal strife."

Yang Guan waved his hand to bring up the screen, accelerating the playback of the algorithm-simulated process of Su Ge's abduction.

When the gray-haired man was disposing of his accomplice's body, Yang Guan slowed down the footage.

"He destroyed all the backup storage chips of the two men, leaving no video recordings of them during their lives. Unfortunately, we can only simulate the scene through traces. Without sound, we cannot be completely certain of the reason for their infighting."

Bai Miao's voice still rang directly in Yang Guan's ears: "Besides money, what other reason could there be? Judging from the simulation, his accomplices thought he was just threatening with a gun and did not make any dodging movements, but he fired directly, probably because this hibernator is very valuable."

Yang Guan shook his head. "I think there might be some unexpected incident here. At least, this shot wasn't premeditated. Otherwise, why would he wait until the other accomplice was so far away before shooting him after killing one? What was he hesitating about?"

"Impulsive behavior during an argument," Bai Miao explained.

“That’s possible.” Yang Guan nodded and sped up the footage. “The reason for the internal strife isn’t the main point; the biggest question lies here.”

The image freezes again on the moment when the gray-haired man holds a gun to his chin.

"He killed his accomplice and then committed suicide. Why?" Yang Guan muttered.

"A guilty conscience?" Bai Miao shrugged indifferently; she didn't quite understand why Yang Guan was so concerned.

In her eyes, this was not a case worth caring about. Since the bandits died in infighting and the hibernator was successfully rescued, the case could be closed.

At that moment, a test report was sent to her brain-computer interface.

Yang Guan also received the same report, and the subject of the examination was the brain-computer interface damaged by the shooting in the gray-haired man.

Yang Guan needed time to read, while Bai Miao finished reading the report in half a second and then looked surprised.

"What's wrong?" Yang Guan asked.

"Besides the physical damage, his brain-computer interface chip was also burned out, and there was no video recording of his death." Bai Miao was somewhat surprised.

"Brain-computer interface fried?"

Yang Guan was very disappointed. He had hoped to use the images of the gray-haired man stored in his memory chip to determine the truth behind his suicide, but now that lead was lost.

"It's possible he was invaded by demons and monsters. This is probably not a coincidence. The most likely scenario is that his accomplices suspected he would betray them and implanted a backdoor in his brain," Bai Miao analyzed.

She exclaimed, "This Suger is so lucky!"

"Luck..." Yang Guan pondered, "Could it not be luck?"

"what is that?"

Bai Miao found Yang Guan's guess ridiculous and scoffed.

"He's an ancient person, it's incredibly lucky he didn't die. In the trace back, he's been lying still the whole time. Why don't you just go and ask him when he wakes up?"

……

Suger sat up abruptly, raising his gun to point forward, but his hand was empty. Looking at the bed beneath him, he vaguely thought he was back in the sanatorium, waking up from hibernation once more.

The room's furnishings were unfamiliar; three walls were gray, and the left wall had a full-length window, revealing the vast Gobi Desert awakening in the morning light.

Where is this?

Suger remembered clearly that last night, in that city full of skyscrapers, even the sunlight couldn't reach the bottom; how could there be such a desolate landscape?

Then he saw the digital clock flashing in the upper right corner of the floor-to-ceiling window and realized that it was just a screen.

The clock showed that it was 6 a.m. on June 25, indicating that he had been unconscious for more than 6 hours.

He had changed into loose brown clothes, somewhat like his old loungewear. Lifting the thin blanket, the wound that had pierced his stomach wall was now covered with a flesh-colored gelatinous substance; pressing it gently, he felt no pain.

Recalling the sounds he heard before losing consciousness, Suger knew he was saved.

Having just learned his lesson, he remained cautious, touching his face with both hands for a while to make sure he wasn't blindfolded or subjected to any other equipment. He then carefully examined his head and even picked at his ears for a long time.

He pinched himself again, and only after feeling the excruciating pain did he finally believe that the environment before him was real.

Suddenly, as if he had thought of something, he lifted the pillow and opened the bedside table.

"What are you looking for?"

A voice came from behind him. Su Ge stopped what he was doing and saw a man standing in the doorway. Some doubts flashed through his mind.

Was he the one who saved him?
What is his purpose?

After the turmoil of the previous night, his first reaction to anything was suspicion, almost as if he had developed paranoia.

But regardless, the other person saved his life. He uttered a single word:

"gun."

"Oh, that! That's a contraband item; it's already been handed over to the security bureau."

As the man spoke, he walked into the room and extended his right hand to Suger.

"Yang Guan, investigator from the Third Investigation Team for Abnormal Events."

"Su Ge." Su Ge shook hands with Yang Guan. "Excuse me, what kind of organization is the Extraordinary Abilities Group Three?"

“It’s normal that you don’t know. We belong to the security department and are responsible for investigating unusual cases.” Yang Guan smiled. “Sit down first, let’s talk while we sit down.”

Unusual case?

Is the investigation focused on the general, or on those dead men?
Or are they here to check up on themselves?

These questions flashed through Su Ge's mind. He sat down on the edge of the bed, and as soon as he sat down, Yang Guan asked casually, "By the way, you know how to use a gun?"

“I’ve touched it a few times,” Suger said.

"Your gun-holding technique looks pretty professional. Even though you're unconscious, your wrist is still so taut. What did you do before?"

Yang Guan was very relaxed, as if chatting with a friend. As he spoke, he sat back and a maglev chair floated over and steadily supported him.

"I trained during university military training and was awarded the title of model soldier."

Suger chuckled, deliberately avoiding the question. Although the organization had fabricated a plausible social identity for him before his hibernation, answering every question sometimes seemed like a sign of insecurity.

"That's it..."

Yang Guan seemed to be deep in thought. When he noticed Su Ge's gaze shifting to the area below his buttocks, he immediately got up and patted the maglev chair.

"Would you like to have a seat?"

"no, I'm fine."

Su Ge waved his hand, somewhat touched by Yang Guan's attitude. After waking from hibernation, he had finally encountered someone with human warmth.

"Thank you very much, Investigator Yang," Su Ge said emotionally.

Yang Guan understood that Su Ge was referring to the rescue operation the night before.

"You really want to thank me?"

He smiled, sat down again, and looked at Sug.

"Then tell me, what did you do when he committed suicide?"
