Chapter 119-118: Unlocking
"I'm a new recruit to the Security Bureau."
Suger stepped forward and showed his identification: a 6cm x 8cm black leather wallet with the Security Bureau's emblem on the outside and Suger's photo on the inside.
He failed to notice the numerous inconsistencies in his actions: he was merely an observer hidden behind Shen Ke, and could not act autonomously in the dark web. The identification he displayed was also incorrect; it was something from two centuries ago, and the emblem on the wallet was a gold-red national emblem, while the Security Bureau's emblem should be a red feather within a white rectangular frame.
The figure nodded, still keeping its distance from Su Ge, which made Su Ge a little anxious. He approached again, but the figure retreated again. Su Ge was worried that he would scare the other party away, so he didn't dare to make any rash moves this time.
"What do you want to know?" the figure asked.
“You know how those hibernators died, right?” Soger asked. “You certainly do.”
"Of course I know."
Who is hunting them down?
"enemy."
"Who is the enemy?"
"The enemy...the enemy is the person who is hunting you down."
This was utter nonsense. The figure seemed to say something else, but as Su Ge listened carefully, the voice grew increasingly indistinct, and the figure itself became blurred and indistinct.
"Where are they? How do I find them?"
Sug pressed for answers, but the figure quickly shrank and disappeared into the distance. He hurriedly chased after it, his feet feeling unsteady, as if he were running from the bottom of the water to the surface.
"Snapped!"
A crisp voice sounded.
Suger opened his eyes.
He sat in the control room of the printing plant, with Ryoko Chiba watching him. She was even holding up her hand, making a snapping gesture with her fingers. Suger paused, sat up straight, and looked around at his surroundings.
"I am asleep?"
"Ah."
"What happened?" he murmured. "We were just on the dark web."
“You’re asleep.” Chiba Ryoko sat down opposite him, crossing her legs. “The space I just entered was a trap.”
“A trap…” Sog took a deep breath and composed himself. “I only accessed the dark web through you, how did I fall for it?”
“You were only hit by the most superficial attack.” Chiba Ryoko shrugged. “I cut off the connection when I realized the attack, but you still… those bio-signals hypnotized you.”
Socrates thought of the sound of dripping water, echoes, and faint background noise in that tunnel.
"Did I have a dream?"
“You should be thankful you were just having a dream here.” Chiba Ryoko looked into the darkness of a corner of the printing factory. “If you were dreaming in that dark web space, you’d be in trouble.”
"What will happen?"
“There are many possibilities, depending on the attacker’s purpose. In short, you could have your cognition altered at a subconscious level.” She turned to look at Suger. “I may be speaking in a rather abstract way. For example, if an investigator’s cognition is affected, he might perceive his colleagues or passersby as demons or monsters.”
Suger remained silent, staring at the glass, where the reflection looked just like the figure from before.
"trap……"
Shen Ke said he should be grateful, but he was very unwilling.
"why?"
"The Security Bureau's assessment is correct; that guy wants to cut ties with them. He's set traps in the old contact channels he left behind, meaning he's warning the Security Bureau not to investigate further." "That will only anger the Security Bureau." Suger frowned. "There's no need for him to do that."
"What should he do?" Chiba Ryoko asked. "Or rather, what would you do if you were in his shoes?"
"If I do something wrong, I will actually keep in touch with the security agency."
“That’s true.” Chiba Ryoko looked at Suger, the mastermind behind the massive prison break. “But there’s no need to speculate. Perhaps he’s realized the Security Bureau already suspects him? Anyway, the message he’s conveying is clear: if the Security Bureau investigates him further, they’ll be taking a huge risk. Data contamination and endless malicious attacks—Li Lou won’t want to touch those things. Digital life forms need to maintain the stability of their thought models and must protect their reputation. Relying on investigators to clean up the mess is too costly. This matter should end here.”
"That art gallery..."
“Speaking of which,” Chiba Ryoko tapped the table, and a chip was ejected from the printer’s feed port, “I’ve captured some data from the trap. All I need to do is forge a record of hiring a water ghost, and I can report it to the security bureau. With this, you should be able to complete your trial mission.”
"Thank you."
Suger's smile seemed a little forced.
She had everything arranged perfectly, like an omnipotent housekeeper. Of course, his reluctance wasn't due to pride, but simply a sense of unwillingness to give up. In that art gallery, some of the artworks contained too many metaphors that he couldn't let go of.
This shouldn't have been reported. If the security bureau receives the news, this dark web space will most likely be blocked.
"Should we go back there and take another look? I feel there's something fishy about this."
Ryoko Chiba simply looked at him without responding. Suger realized his words were somewhat inappropriate. Even Li Lou cherished her reputation; implying that the corrupted data on the dark web would certainly affect her as well, his request was far too reasonable.
"Feel sorry."
He got up, took out his medicine box, and was about to leave the control room to get one when she called out "Hey!" He turned around, and her expression was a half-smile.
"You really treat me like a human being, and a sensitive and vulnerable little girl at that."
The aluminum medicine box feels cool to the touch.
Indeed, Su Ge realized that she was a demon, and the image she projected, her expressions, and her actions were all products of her interaction with him. He had a feeling that while he controlled her persona in his mind, she was actually controlling him.
"What else?" he probed.
“Let’s get practical,” she said bluntly. “With just a few henchmen, we can turn that place upside down without taking any risks.”
Su Ge remained silent, he had never dared to rely on demons and monsters, but in fact he had been using Shen Ke all along. His concerns seemed to only make him a little timid.
He turned the medicine box, and after a while, a pill was flicked between his fingers.
What will happen to those accomplices?
“It will have some impact, but I will keep an eye on them.” Shen Ke seemed a little surprised. “To take into account your moral values, I will choose gangsters with more serious criminal records to do this job.”
Suger remembered the gray-haired man who had almost killed her, the organ trafficker, her accomplice.
"Go for it, I'll wait for your news."
He lit the medicine, put it in his mouth, and left the control room.
His fingers, which were holding the filter, trembled slightly; beneath that trepidation, there seemed to be a thrilling excitement.
It's long overdue.
A voice spoke in his heart.
The smoke drifted before his eyes, separated by the dust-free barrier of the printing workshop. Amidst the ever-changing gray-white wisps of smoke, it seemed as if a hideous blue ghost face with canine teeth flashed by.
