Chapter 21 Going Home
The Beijing Youth Film Studio is a film production institution affiliated with Beijing Film Studio. Its main task is to support the teaching work of various departments of Beijing Film Studio, and it also produces several feature films every year.
Huang Lei borrowed the cameras from Wu Yuchen's group, and the post-production work also took place here.
Huang Lei had already arranged the equipment beforehand, and Wu Yuchen even treated the experienced washing technician to a meal and bought him two packs of cigarettes. The technician happily assured him that he would guarantee a beautiful wash.
The cost of the cleaning solution needed for rinsing will naturally be covered by Wu Yuchen and his team. The rinsing itself can be left to the experienced technician, who will probably take three to five days. Once the rinsing is finished, it will be the next weekend, giving Wu Yuchen time to edit the footage.
He was able to take three days off last week thanks to Huang Lei's guarantee, but he can't take any more leave next week and must attend classes obediently.
By the time all the work was finished, it was already afternoon.
Wu Yuchen didn't stay at school any longer; instead, he took the bus home.
Wu Yuchen is originally from Beijing, so he can usually go home on weekends. However, he hadn't been home for two or three weeks because he was preparing for "Car 44".
As Wu Yuchen opened the door and stepped inside, he saw a middle-aged man sitting upright on the sofa diagonally opposite the door. The man shook the magazine in his hand and looked up at him.
"Oh, you've finally decided to come back?"
"Dad, didn't I already say? I've been busy filming these past two weeks!" Wu Yuchen explained as he changed into his slippers.
Wu Jianping glanced at his son, clearly disbelieving. He was a freshman in college; how could making a movie be so easy?
"Wait a minute, your mom is on duty at the hospital today and won't be back for a while. If you're hungry, have some fruit to tide you over."
"Alright, alright, don't worry about me, go read your military magazine."
Wu Yuchen glanced at his father's full head of black hair again, still feeling slightly dazed.
Unlike other transmigrators whose past lives were filled with bitterness and hatred or misery, his parents were in good health before his rebirth. His mother often went to square dancing, and his father insisted on jogging in the morning, even though his hair had turned white. The only thing the elderly couple worried about was his life. He had a girlfriend, but they had no plans to get married or have children.
Wu Yuchen was very happy to see that his parents had suddenly become twenty or thirty years younger after his rebirth, and he no longer had to listen to their nagging about getting married.
His father's name is Wu Jianping, a name that sounds very much like something from the 50s. He served in the army when he was young, and even participated in the Sino-Vietnamese War, the kind of person who went to the battlefield and earned military merits.
Logically, he could have been promoted further if he had stayed in the army, but when he went back to visit his family in the early 80s, he saw that his son was old enough to remember things but was not close to him at all. So, he gritted his teeth and applied for demobilization for the sake of his wife and children. He was assigned to a publishing house, and more than ten years later, he has become a senior editor, a section-level cadre, which is a very minor official position in Beijing.
To be honest, Wu Yuchen's interest in movies is partly due to Wu Jianping. After all, the publishing house has connections and can always get its hands on entertainment works that are less common in the market, such as movies. Therefore, Wu Yuchen watched many foreign films that were rarely seen in the market from a young age, which sparked his interest in movies.
When Zhou Shulan entered the house, she heard the clattering sound of stir-frying coming from the kitchen. She couldn't help but feel strange. Her husband, Wu Jianping, was a typical rough northern man who could only cook noodles and porridge at most. She wondered who had come to the house and gone into the kitchen.
Just then, she saw her husband standing at the kitchen doorway, peering inside, and couldn't help but ask, "Jianping, who is it?"
Wu Jianping's face changed, and he pointed inside with his chin: "Look for yourself."
When Zhou Shulan walked to the kitchen door, she saw her son, who only knew how to cook instant noodles, now holding a pot in one hand and stir-frying vegetables with the other, and his movements seemed quite skilled.
"Chenchen, when did you learn to cook?!" Zhou Shulan asked in surprise.
"I just learned it. Mom, please sit down and try my cooking today." Wu Yuchen didn't turn around.
Zhou Shulan was about to ask him something else when Wu Jianping tugged at her sleeve. He pulled her to sit down in the living room, then looked towards the kitchen and lowered his voice, saying:
"I bet Chenchen has his eye on some girl."
Zhou Shulan thought about it and realized that it made sense. Otherwise, how could her son have suddenly learned to cook after only two months at university?
She couldn't think of any other reason besides the magic of love.
Zhou Shulan felt a surge of jealousy. After all, she had raised her handsome son for almost 18 years, and now he was learning to cook in order to please another woman. This made her unhappy.
Seeing Zhou Shulan about to get up, Wu Jianping grabbed her and said, "What are you doing?"
"I have to go ask him!" Zhou Shulan said directly, her face tense.
"Hey, stop worrying. Chenchen will be 18 soon, an adult, let him decide for himself!"
Zhou Shulan's face was still unhappy. She felt that her son had been wronged. Nowadays in the North, it's almost always the women who cook for the men; it's rare for men to cook. Besides, her son is so handsome; shouldn't it be the other way around, with the women pursuing him showering him with attention?
Wu Jianping naturally knew what his wife was thinking, and comforted her with a smile:
"Don't overthink it, it's all still far from certain."
Isn't that great? At least Chenchen won't go hungry anymore.
If you're unhappy, I'll have my son come home and cook for you every weekend from now on~
"Go away, I wouldn't want to!" Zhou Shulan said, but in her heart she was thinking about eating more of her son's cooking later.
Wu Yuchen turned off the stove in the kitchen and poured the contents into a plate.
His nickname is Chenchen. The fortune teller said that the name Yuchen was too grand and that he might have a calamity in his life, so his parents gave him the nickname Chenchen to make it sound less grand. But because it sounds similar, people who are not close to him don't know it.
After the five stir-fried dishes were all laid out on the table, Wu Yuchen sat down and said with a smile:
"Mom and Dad, try it and see how it is."
Wu Jianping looked at the dishes on the table and thought they looked pretty decent, so he picked up his chopsticks, took a bite, chewed a few times, and found them to be quite good!
"Ok!"
He then took a bite of the steamed bun and ate a large mouthful with his chopsticks.
Wu Yuchen could tell from his father's eating manner that he was satisfied, and then looked at Zhou Shulan.
After taking a bite, Zhou Shulan realized it didn't seem like something a novice had made, and her expression darkened further. She then put down her chopsticks and slapped Wu Yuchen's arm.
"You silly child, why didn't you study properly in college and instead went to learn how to cook!"
How can you put all your effort into this? How long have you been studying it?
Wu Yuchen really didn't expect his mother to react this way, and he retorted:
"Mom, I didn't! I've been studying very hard at school. If you don't believe me, call my homeroom teacher and ask!"
This stir-fry is so easy! I've seen you cook it so many times before, you could do it with just your hands!
Wu Jianping glanced at his son, then chewed on his steamed bun and vegetables without saying a word.
"You're still lying to me? Chenchen, tell your mother honestly, are you dating someone?" Zhou Shulan finally couldn't hold back and asked directly.
