Chapter 183 Return
Sweet dreams in the middle of the night.
I didn't go to sleep until after midnight, but I still got up at 6 a.m. every morning.
Chen Fan got dressed and went outside. As expected, the outside world was already a vast expanse of white.
Seeing such thick snow, he still felt a little out of place. Forty years later, where in Jiangnan could there be such heavy snow? If it weren't for the time-space distortion, he would have thought he had arrived in the North.
A gust of cold wind blew by, and Chen Fan shivered. He turned around, went inside, picked up the kettle on the charcoal stove, and poured water to wash up.
By this time, the charcoal in the stove was almost out, so he stopped adding more. He figured he wouldn't need the stove anymore since he was going to work soon.
Going back to work on the first day of the Lunar New Year? Does anyone understand, family members?!
At this moment, Chen Fan felt that the 3650 broadcaster work points he earned in a year were not much at all.
After washing up, Jiang Tiantian and Jiang Lili had already prepared breakfast in the kitchen.
The ingredients did not include yesterday's leftovers. Since it's a time to say goodbye to the old and welcome the new, as long as possible, at least on the first day of the new year, we will not eat yesterday's leftovers.
A pot of porridge with cured pork, a plate of steamed cured fish, a bowl of assorted meatballs, and several large steamed buns made Chen Fan's mouth water.
He sat down at the table, picked up a steamed bun, broke it open, and couldn't help but grin. "Wow, the filling is scallions, cabbage, and cured pork fat. It smells so good! When did you get up to make this?"
Jiang Lili laughed, "My sister got up very early, and she made this breakfast. The noodles were made last night. You should try it. My sister's cooking is much better than mine."
Chen Fan took a bite, and the delicious taste lingered on his lips and teeth. "Mmm, delicious."
He swallowed what was in his mouth, then turned to look at Jiang Tiantian. "Why are you up so early? Sleep a little longer. I was just saying I'd cook some rice, heat up some meatballs and fried snacks, and we could eat like this."
Jiang Tiantian smiled and said, "Anyway, I have to catch the train later, so I got up a little earlier."
"Catching the carriage?"
Chen Fan was stunned and stared blankly at her. "Leaving today?"
They just arrived yesterday and are leaving today? Isn't that a bit too fast?
Jiang Tiantian glanced at her younger sister and said with a smile, "It's been like this for the past two years. I come here on the 30th and go back on the 1st of the new year. I have to go to work tomorrow too."
Chen Fan's smile vanished, and he didn't know what to say.
Jiang Lili pouted, looking somewhat downcast. "A few years ago, it was advocated that there should be no holiday for the Spring Festival, but my sister had to take leave every year and got criticized for it."
Then, looking at Jiang Tiantian, he pouted and said, "I told you not to come, but you still insisted on coming."
Jiang Tiantian glanced at her, tore off a piece of steamed bun, and stuffed it into her mouth. "Anyway, you'll get criticized whether you ask for leave or not, so you might as well ask for leave. Otherwise, how can Mom and Dad feel at ease leaving you here alone for the New Year?"
Jiang Lili's eyes suddenly reddened, "But it's dangerous for you to run so far. If Xiao Fan hadn't happened to run into you yesterday, then..."
She didn't dare to say anything more.
Jiang Tiantian smiled and comforted her, saying, "It's the New Year, why are you crying? Aren't you ashamed? Look at me, I'm fine."
Chen Fan, who was standing to the side, understood that it wasn't that she wanted to leave, but that she had no choice but to leave. Although it was no longer emphasized that there would be no holiday during the Spring Festival this year, it still depended on who it was. Someone like Jiang Tiantian was definitely the best person to be on duty.
He hesitated for two seconds, then said, "I'll take you to the commune to catch the bus later."
Jiang Tiantian quickly replied, "No need, no need, I can manage on my own."
He then looked at his younger sister and laughed, "If you don't believe me, ask Lili. I used to walk by myself."
Chen Fan smiled and said, "It's okay, I happen to be going to the commune anyway, it's all on the way."
Before Jiang Tiantian could refuse, he started eating heartily.
He finished his meal in a few bites, got up and went outside. He returned less than ten minutes later, leading two animals: a mule and a donkey.
Needless to say, it was borrowed from Master Liu at the livestock shed. The two animals had only a blanket draped over their backs, which was enough for people to sit on.
They then went into the room and quickly came out, fully armed.
Jiang Tiantian finished packing her things and came out with her luggage bag. When she saw the two animals, she couldn't help but ask in surprise, "What's this?"
Chen Fan pointed outside, “The roads are covered in snow. When will you get there? There’s only one bus in the morning, at 7 o’clock. If you miss it, you’ll have to wait until 2 o’clock in the afternoon. But if you take the afternoon bus, you won’t make it back to Yunhu. If you don’t want to be late, hurry up.”
He took the travel bag from her hand and then pulled the donkey over.
Seeing that he had already brought the donkey over, Jiang Tiantian could only accept it with trepidation and climbed up with her sister's help.
The donkey took a couple of steps to adjust to the weight on its body, and then moved forward with small, quick steps.
Chen Fan followed behind on a mule.
Normally, it takes more than 30 minutes to walk from here to the commune, and it's even more unpredictable on snowy days. However, with mules and donkeys, it only takes less than 20 minutes to get to the commune.
Chen Fan took out his alarm clock to check the time. It was already 6:40. He still had 20 minutes before starting work, so he said to Jiang Tiantian, "Be careful on your way. When you get there, write a letter to your sister to let her know you're safe. If you're worried about the inconvenience, you can put it in an envelope and mail it to the brigade headquarters with my name on it."
Jiang Tiantian stood by the roadside, carrying a travel bag, looking up at Chen Fan, her emotions fluctuating.
After several seconds, she smiled and said to Chen Fan, "Thank you."
Chen Fan smiled and said, "We're friends, so there's no need for formalities."
Then he waved and said, "I have to go to work now. I'll contact you again when I have time."
Jiang Tiantian smiled, waved, turned around, and boarded the bus.
(It's probably this kind of bus)
Seeing that Jiang Tiantian had gotten into the car and was seated, Chen Fan waved and rode away on his mule, leading his donkey.
Jiang Tiantian kept staring at Chen Fan's figure. After a long while, she finally let out a long breath, her brows furrowing slightly, as if she was thinking about something.
A moment later, she suddenly felt something was wrong with the travel bag that was resting on her lap and being pressed down by her arm; there seemed to be something hard inside.
I quickly unzipped the bag, and the first thing I saw was a paper package.
There was another line of text above: "Eat one when you feel dizzy to prevent low blood sugar."
I reached out and touched it; it seemed to contain something like rice candy or sesame candy.
Without a doubt, Chen Fan must have put it there, and only he had ever touched his bag.
Jiang Tiantian tightened the zipper again, her brows furrowing even more. She bit her lip, thinking to herself, "Such a capable, considerate man, and we live together every day, how could my sister not care?"
……
Chen Fan hurried to the radio station and finally arrived before 7 o'clock. Only after turning on the radio and watching today's program play on time did he let out a long breath, pick up the water bottle he hadn't had time to put down, and take a big gulp.
After resting for a while, he went downstairs to teach the veterinary students.
They only had one day off yesterday, Lunar New Year's Eve, and are continuing classes today. This shows how hard the teachers, students, and everyone else have worked.
As usual, Chen Fan checked their learning progress, inquired about the difficulties faced by the lagging students, and answered a few questions for them.
When get out of class ended, he announced loudly, "I bought two piglets a few days ago, and I'm going to castrate them tomorrow. I'll do it myself this time. As a veterinarian, castration is an essential skill, so after class tomorrow morning, you all have to come back with me to learn how to castrate pigs."
Upon hearing this, the students' faces lit up with excitement.
Isn't this much more interesting than being locked in a room memorizing texts?!
They all agreed immediately without hesitation.
