Chapter 203 Kurupila
Chapter 203 Kurupila
Lin An looked at the person who caught him.
This is a boy with fiery red hair and dark red skin. He has gold tattoos on his shoulders, arms and ankles, and wears a leaf necklace around his neck. He is short but strong.
The boy was only wearing a dark-colored skirt, which covered his private parts.
It wasn't until Lin An looked closely that he realized he hadn't covered his private parts with a grass skirt—in fact, his private parts were wrapped around his entire hips and waist!
I go……
That must be over three meters long...
Lin An looked down and saw that the boy had feet pointing in opposite directions, with his toes pointing backward and the insteps pointing forward, which sent chills down his spine.
He recognized this strange, mystical archetype, Curupira, or Curupira, which means "body of a child" in Guarani, and is a god in Brasilian folklore and Guarani mythology.
Kurupira has two divine aspects: one is protecting forests and animals from hunters, mainly in response to humanity's excessive exploitation of nature.
Secondly, he is the god of mischief, fertility, and lust. When unmarried women in the central Lower East Continent become pregnant without their knowledge, they accuse Kurupira of forcibly abducting them while they are asleep. Their elders will also kill these newborn children by throwing them to the ground in the name of the monster.
Around the 16th century, the Portuguese Kingdom of Togossa invaded Lower East Asia and colonized Brasilia.
When the Togossa people wrote their native mythology, they distorted Kurupila into the embodiment of a demon. Since the Guarani civilization was passed down orally, they were powerless to refute their malicious modifications.
In reality, Kurupila is the will of the rainforest, the embodiment of the souls of trees and plants, a true god.
Lin An, in his miniature form within the bottle, lacked a system and couldn't see Kurupila's data, but he estimated that Kurupila's rating was Mythical, with a radiation level of around 20% and a pollution level of approximately 40% to 50%.
Mysterious individuals of this caliber are extremely rare, and Lin An was quite surprised to encounter one so soon after falling.
Although he didn't know the extent of the witch's teleportation error, after a moment's thought, he realized that Kurupila's appearance was no accident. It was very likely that the "lair" of the Guarani pantheon was not far away, and Deer Brother happened to be there on business.
"What are you?" Kurupira asked again, thankfully in Portuguese, which Lin An could understand. "You don't resemble any animal I've ever seen. Are you human?"
Lin An tentatively asked, "I come from a faraway place, I am a fairy—do you know my kind?"
At the same time, he stared intently into Kurupila's eyes. If the latter showed even the slightest hostility, Lin An would immediately have the witch teleport him back, and the experiment would be declared a failure.
“I know! There’s something in Ellan that’s a lot like you, called a ‘fairy.’” Kurupila chuckled to herself. “You’re a fairy, aren’t you!”
You're the real fairy!
Lin An involuntarily glanced at his three-meter-long "thing," suppressed his thoughts, and nodded.
Guarani mythology is very similar to Celtic mythology; both are civilizations that revere nature and ritual, so they can understand the concept of "fairy".
Kurupila's eyes lit up at first, then he became alert and tilted his head to one side.
How do I know you're telling the truth?
"Then what do you think I am? Have you ever seen a human like me before?" Lin An asked rhetorically, shaking the tiny, baby-like arms of the person in the bottle. "Whether you believe it or not, put me down first."
Kurubira pondered for a moment and said, "Alright, I believe you. Something this small can't lie." He took a step back and leaned against a rubber tree. "But I won't let you go, because I found you, and you belong to me now."
Damn it, is he playing the Little Prince here?
Lin An said expressionlessly, "The person I'm looking for isn't you, but a stag that's all white with feathers on its antlers. You should know it, right?"
"Goma? A new guest in our tribe?" Kurupila said in surprise. "But if you want to find him, with your short legs, you won't reach your destination in a hundred years. Now that you've agreed to play with me, I'll take you there."
He looked Lin An up and down, his eyes burning with simple, straightforward curiosity. This interest stemmed from the boy's boundless energy, not from well-intentioned enthusiasm.
Lin An didn't care about Kurupila's true thoughts. The witch only gave him two hours, after which the little man in the bottle would return to Dietrich.
Since we're already here, why not give it a try?
“It’s always safer to travel with someone than to travel alone,” he casually agreed with Kurupila.
"Ow!"
The boy with fiery red hair placed Lin An on his shoulder, letting him grab his leaf necklace. With a powerful leap from his thick thighs, he jumped more than ten meters away.
A moist breeze whistled through the rainforest, and the branches rustled like dancers in a ballroom.
As Linan ran like the wind, a vibrant world teeming with animals flashed before his eyes. Among the magnificent forests of tall trees, the Amazon River flowed swiftly, winding its way through the forest.
The smiling monkey leaps from tree to tree in search of food, rustling the leaves as it flips through them.
The songs of various colorful parrots, the buzzing of insects, and the roars of wild beasts came from all directions. The three-toed sloth slowly climbed up the snake-like twisted tree; to its left was a huge python, and above it was a hawk with a long cry.
"You run really fast."
Lin An estimated that at Kurupila's speed, he would definitely be able to see Deer Brother before the witch lost the coordinates of the little man in the bottle.
"Haha, this is nothing to me," the boy said with a laugh.
The sound of the flowing water grew louder and louder, and Lin An saw many colorful poisonous frogs inhabiting among the ferns. They would occasionally let out loud calls that echoed for a long time in the thick fog.
The clouds descended, and the entire rainforest was shrouded in mist, darkening the area.
This was worse than rain; tiny water droplets were suspended in the air. If Kurupila hadn't been incredibly fast, and if Lin An hadn't been in his energy state as the little man in the bottle, his clothes and skin would have been soaked through by the mist, making it difficult for him to move.
"Giggle, giggle—"
Suddenly, a strange call, different from that of a toucan, appeared in the thick fog. Kurupila slowed down and put a hand to her ear to listen.
"What's wrong?" Lin An asked.
"Shh, don't make a sound! That's my 'brother' Taiwei. He has too little Antupuri power and too much Tau power, so he's gone mad."
"The power of Tau?"
“Another term is ‘radiation level’ and ‘pollution level’,” Kurupila explained. “It sounds awful and is quite obscure. Our name is more fitting, don’t you think?”
For most people, your titles are even more confusing. Lin An thought.
He was clear about the origin of these two terms. In the Guarani creation myth, the supreme god Tupa, with the help of his wife, the moon goddess Arasi, created everything on the earth, including animals and plants, and placed the stars in the sky.
Then Tupa used clay mixed with water to create humans beside the Amazon River.
After giving life to humankind, he left them with souls of "good" and "evil".
These two spirits were called the good god Antupuri and the evil god Tau.
The first humans created by Tupa were Rupawe and Sipawe, whose names in Guarani mean "father of mankind" and "mother of mankind," respectively. They had three sons and an unknown number of daughters. However, the most important character in Guarani mythology is their granddaughter, the beautiful Kelana.
Legend has it that the evil god Tau coveted her beauty and transformed into a handsome young man to abduct her. The benevolent god Antupuri intervened but was no match for Tau and was unfortunately defeated.
Seeing that Tau and Kailana had become husband and wife, Antupuri cursed them, turning each of their offspring into grotesque, cruel, and unacceptable monsters.
Tau and Kailana had seven children, who are also the seven main monsters in the Guarani mythology.
Curupila is one of them, and the only one whose appearance resembles that of a human, which is why he was accepted and widely spread in countries such as Brasilia and Yuruguay.
This is the Guarani myth that Lin An learned from a book. However, Kurupira called the degree of pollution "the power of Tau" and the radiation value "the power of Antupuri," which profoundly illustrates the different understandings between the locals and the Portuguese who recorded the myth.
The main ideas of Central Plains philosophy are monism and the concept of "In the beginning was the Word," while Western philosophy advocates dualism, believing that good and evil are separate and opposed, just as God and the devil are mortal enemies.
The indigenous philosophies of Upper and Lower East Asia are quite different from both, and they integrate monistic and dualistic theories by embracing complexity.
In some respects, they are proponents of dualism, such as the evil, greed, and selfishness of Tau, or the lust and cunning of Kurupila.
However, they also believe that all things come from the same source, and that these supreme substances, such as the "Holy Spirit," have long been integrated into the individual's body, mind, and spirit as part of a larger whole.
They respect individuality without emphasizing the effort to integrate into the sacred and lose oneself, while also believing that most things exist within a framework and are not composed of an absolute whole.
That is, everything is independent, but at the same time, they are all one.
This idea is already reflected in the local mythology, and the Guarani mythology further elaborates on it. Antupuri represents a benevolent yet slightly indifferent divinity, while Tau represents a pure and emotional humanity.
The local philosophy brought Lin An more enlightenment and made him reflect on his recent experiences, making him even more eager to see those familiar figures.
"Cuckoo!"
The strange bird calls grew closer, and a huge, phantom-like figure appeared and disappeared in the mist.
It has the head of a giant parrot, but the lower body is that of a thick python, with two men's arms growing from its abdomen, pushing its body on the ground and moving slowly.
It was Tau's third son, the god of swamps and short-tailed crocodiles, Tau.
"He's probably found you, little fairy."
The way Kurupila addressed him made Lin An's lips twitch, and he couldn't help but say, "You can call me... Lin An."
“Oh, then you can call me 'Gabriel Manuela'.” A smile spread across the boy’s tanned face. “I’ll take you across his territory, Lin An.”
After saying that, Kurupila put his hand to his mouth and whistled a sharp whistle.
"Ugh——!"
Legend has it that his whistling can cause dizziness, dazedness, and headaches, ultimately leading unruly hunters astray and making it impossible for them to find their way home.
Upon hearing the whistle, the giant snake with the parrot's head froze as if struck by lightning. Taking advantage of this, Kurupila strode across the misty land where the stream flowed gently.
The journey lasted about half an hour. As the sun gradually sank below the horizon, the faint outlines of stars appeared in the clear sky. They hung low in the rainforest, which had not yet been disturbed by humans, close to the moss-covered tree trunks, seemingly within reach like berries.
As Kurupila ran, he kept chatting with Lin An. From him, Lin An learned that not only Lu Zige, but others were also in their tribe.
"Where is your 'tribal center'?" he asked, trying to get information out of Kurupila.
"Inside the house."
"A temple-like building?"
“No, we don’t want a temple because it will teach us to quarrel with the Holy Spirit, like Saviours and Protestants do. We don’t want to know that,” Kurupila said. “We are children of the Holy Spirit, and we want to learn from it and receive its approval.”
"Crash..."
The sound of the waterfall reached Lin An, who looked up.
They had been traveling down the Amazon River until a waterfall appeared at the edge of the tangled rainforest, where the water was as thick as an oak trunk at its thickest point.
“You’d better hide under my hair, or you’ll get swept away,” the boy said. “Soon after you cross the waterfall, you’ll reach our village! Then you’ll see that singing moose.”
“Thank you, Gabriel,” Lin An said sincerely.
He had only tried it out of curiosity, but to his surprise, Kurupila actually brought him to Deer Brother's side.
“Yes, I will ask you for payment, Lin An.” Kurupila shook her head. “Have you heard of a bank?”
"of course."
“The Portuguese put their money there for safekeeping, and soon they get it back with interest. We don’t have such a bank; but when we have enough food or blankets, we give them to others, and before long they return them with interest. That’s our bank.”
As the boy spoke, he entered the waterfall, pressed his body against the wet rocks, and flew through the fast-moving curtain of water like the wind.
Lin An hid under his hair, so he didn't get wet.
Inside was a cave, the entrance of which was quite dark, with faint light shining through the cracks and fissures in the rocks, casting shadows on Lin An and Kurupila.
"Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock..."
Water droplets fell, and a refreshing scent wafted over, mixed with the smell of dried sheep dung and burning dry branches.
Kurupila opened her arms and ran inside happily.
“That’s where the Holy Spirit dwells!” He didn’t forget to introduce it to Lin An. “It smells like my ‘sister’ cooked a pot of black bean stew with meat, oh, and roast meat too! Lin An, I hope you don’t eat half the pot in one go!”
Lin An narrowed his eyes slightly. Behind the waterfall, a hidden world unfolded, with a cluster of low-rise buildings appearing.
The torchlight dispelled the rainforest mist, but instead of completely eliminating it, the clouds and rain, illuminated by the light, made the surrounding world vibrant with color.
A figure came into view. It lowered its head, its colorful feathers fluttering, and was drinking sugarcane wine from a leaf-shaped wine glass. A rainbow shone on its snow-white fur, making it appear both real and ethereal, exceptionally elegant.
"Brother Lu!" Lin An called out.
The moose immediately sensed something and looked around with its deep, large eyes.
"Is it just my imagination?" it murmured to itself. "I think I heard Lin An's voice."
