Chapter 7 The Keeper of Secrets
Chapter 7 The Keeper of Secrets
"Oh."
As Angela spoke, she revealed her teeth, which were uneven, but she showed no intention of wearing braces; rather, she simply couldn't afford them.
Soon, the girl took the black bread, smelled it, and since Ria did not use her golden eyes, she naturally did not gain any faith.
"You are a good man, Mr. Kelcha, may the sun protect you."
After Angela finished speaking, she made a pattern resembling a mosquito coil on her chest. But instead of closing the door and leaving, she stared at Ria with her emerald green eyes. Just as he was about to speak, Angela took out ten Swarths from her pocket and handed them to him.
Lia remained motionless, somewhat surprised.
Angela's eyes were full of eagerness: "Could you buy me a dictionary from the bookstore? I'm buying it for my brother. I want to teach him to recognize words. You can have the rest of Swarth as a running fee."
Upon hearing that there was money to be made, Ria's eyes lit up. He enthusiastically asked Angela if there was anything else she needed help buying. The child racked her brains for a long time before saying that her younger brother needed a copy of the "Medical Encyclopedia".
She gave Ria ten more swarths, which Ria put into a cloth bundle, went downstairs to find out the location of Mrs. Ster's bookstore, and then went out wearing a mask.
He wasn't the only one dressed like that on the street, so his attire didn't arouse suspicion. After passing through the brick and tile buildings, Ria arrived at the entrance of a small alley.
The gray walls on both sides completely blocked out the sunlight, and gray-green moss, which dislikes light, covered the steps and stairs.
Even though the weather was normal, Ria inexplicably felt cold.
He swallowed hard, but walked into the darkness with a blank expression. He quickly found the bookstore, where the owner greeted him with a cheerful smile.
"Welcome to my run-down bookstore. No books here are available for loan."
The boss's voice was somewhat hoarse, and he was rather obese, with two layers of fat making a metal button on his shirt dangle precariously.
But what Lia cared about wasn't any of that; what she cared about was the bird-beak mask the man was wearing.
"you are a doctor?"
Ria's eyes, hidden behind her collar, darted around, clearly uncomfortable with the word "doctor."
In some early places, doctors would wear these bird-shaped masks filled with fragrant flower petals to prevent the spread of disease.
They hoped to use the fragrance of flowers to ward off the plague.
"no no."
Seemingly noticing Ria's discomfort, the boss shook his head: "How could I possibly have access to such a noble profession? I'm just a backward 'Guardian of Secrets.' I heard from rumors that there have been patients with contamination disease in this town recently, so I took special precautions on my face."
Look, you're wearing a mask too. We're all afraid of those things, aren't we?
As he spoke, the bookstore owner leaned closer to Lia.
“I sense the presence of the mystical side in you. If you ever acquire mystical abilities, we might become colleagues.”
Lia didn't answer, but instead went further inside the bookstore to pick out books.
His life these past few days has been more chaotic than his previous life before he transmigrated, and he's no longer surprised by anything he sees now.
A moment later, he took out a book.
Where did that contaminated patient go?
"Hey, the church took care of it. They're quick to act, even though these things have always been the job of us keepers."
"What does he look like?"
"how could I know."
When Ria heard that the other party didn't know what the patient looked like, he breathed a slight sigh of relief. He had already found the two books he wanted during the conversation. The dictionary cost 7 swahl and the medical encyclopedia cost 8 swahl. Based on this, Ria still had 5 swahl left for travel expenses.
"I'll take these two books. Please pay."
"Would you like it packed up? Packing fee is 2 swahl."
2. Schwarzmania – Robbing money!?
Upon hearing that the packaging fee alone would cost two Swarths, Ria almost couldn't suppress the rage of his eyes. He quickly said no, and as he was paying, a tiny eye appeared on his fingertip, hidden under his nail, almost unnoticeable unless you looked closely.
And this eye will witness the completion of this deal. Even if the other party gives him the items and he pays for them, he will still collect some faith from the other party.
This is what is meant by being diligent and thrifty, and earning money whenever possible.
Furthermore, it's unknown whether the guardian's beliefs differ from those of others.
"Wow."
With the few Schwarzs in Ria's hands going into the hands of the bookstore owner, the transaction was complete.
He said goodbye to the shop owner in a good mood, saying that he would come again if he had the chance. The owner did not stop him from leaving.
Not long after Ria left, the boss picked up his Schwarz and sighed as he listened to the sound of metal clashing together.
"We'll see each other again soon."
As he spoke, he directly lifted the lens off the bird-beak mask, poured Swaal in it, and shook it around. Soon, the sharp sound of metal being slowly crushed by teeth echoed throughout the bookstore.
That decibel level was loud enough to rupture the eardrums of a normal person and cause intracranial hemorrhage, but the boss crushed them like he was chewing any ordinary food and then swallowed them down his narrow and fragile esophagus.
Ten minutes later.
Ria returned to his lodgings with the book. He ran up to the third floor and knocked on Angena's door. The child slowly opened the door and was overjoyed to receive the book she wanted.
She held the dictionary and encyclopedia, her fingers carefully stroking their hard surfaces as if she had seen some rare treasures.
"Thank you, Mr. Kelcha!"
"You really love books."
"I don't like it at all; it's my brother who likes books!"
She insisted that the books were all bought for her younger brother, but in Ria's memory, she had never met Angela's so-called "younger brother".
Never mind, maybe her younger brother lives somewhere else.
Lia stopped meddling in these matters that were none of her concern, went downstairs to her room to tidy up, and planned to feed the little mouse some food.
only……
When he saw it again, it was dead.
The filthy, emaciated gray rat lay on the ground with its eyes open, its limbs stiff, only its belly swollen, so swollen that it looked like a water balloon that would burst at the slightest touch.
All the breadcrumbs that Ria had given it had disappeared. Clearly, it hadn't eaten for a long time and couldn't adapt to eating so much all at once.
A mouse that hadn't seen food for a long time suddenly had some, and it would rather stuff itself to death than wait several hours before eating again.
Because it doesn't know when it will start starving again.
For some reason, Ria felt sorry for the mouse.
