Chapter 128 The Plague Doctor's Reflection
"That's hard to say. Last time we encountered saltwater fish on the plains, so who knows what other things might emerge in such a large lake here."
That being said, they couldn't possibly give up just because they were worried about some potential risks. Ria was also very much looking forward to seeing what strange and extraordinary creatures might be in this vast lake.
However, reality disappointed him; no enormous supernatural creatures appeared during their journey across the suspension bridge.
The suspension bridge that stretches for thousands of meters is called a suspension bridge. Compared to other bridge structures, suspension bridges can use less material to span a longer distance.
These bridges are built relatively high, allowing ships to pass underneath. When building the bridge, there is no need to build temporary piers in the center, so suspension bridges can be built over relatively deep or fast-flowing water.
Its main body is dark brown, and dozens of long cables on both sides are responsible for the reinforcement of its bridge body. On rainy days, the environment seems to be set with a layer of gray filter, and the entire suspension bridge gradually becomes full of eerie color.
A thin mist rose over the lake, and white ships crisscrossed it, occasionally sounding their horns. Flocks of waterbirds hovered overhead, their hoarse cries echoing as their sharp eyes watched every movement on the water.
Ria and James chose to take the next steam car across the bridge. Ria looked around at the distant scenery, which had turned into a white expanse, with only the occasional gray silhouette of a ship passing by.
If such a place didn't attract a few giant creatures, Ria would feel it wouldn't do justice to its atmosphere.
As the vehicle drove to the center of the bridge, James suggested that Ria look ahead.
Lia turned around, and in front of him was a completely white fog, so thick that it could almost condense into water. In fact, from the young man's perspective, half of the bridge surface had been stained with moisture into a deeper color.
The fog was like the gaping maw of a monster, swallowing everything in its path, and the entire suspension bridge was like its long tongue, allowing the passing vehicles to automatically fall into its gluttonous desire.
Several shadowy figures appeared on the road, their shapes unpredictable. These figures resembled ghosts and spirits from the last century, their bodies appearing and disappearing intermittently. Their eyes were blank, and their heads were completely like those of birds. These figures wore long robes and carried oil lamps that emitted a dim yellow light as they walked.
But normal people can't see them. They can even pass through the middle of a vehicle and then float on the road 20 meters away a second later.
"Guess what these are, Kelcha?"
James asked Ria about her reaction to seeing the figures, and he seemed very interested in her reaction.
Lia remained silent, reaching out his hand towards a dark figure, already holding a lit kerosene lamp.
The dark figure seemed excited upon seeing this, and quickly rushed over to connect its lamp and kerosene lamp. After a moment, the flames of both lamps became brighter.
After doing all this, the dark figure bowed amicably to Ria and then vanished without a trace.
"Are these shadows your colleagues?"
"you are right."
James took off his hat and fanned himself a few times: "We can usually turn into mist and dissipate, at which point our bodies become invisible."
But here, for some unspeakable reason, our physical forms will be manifested, becoming visible to things related to the supernatural.
After he finished speaking, his figure faded away, becoming that flickering, uncertain shape.
"Look, it's fun, isn't it?"
James was beaming with pride, while Ria tried poking his stomach with her cane, only to find that it was like poking at thin air—she couldn't get anything out of the water.
"If you stay in that position and then change back, do you think my cane will pierce your intestines?"
“Stop your horrible thoughts!” James told Ria to take the cane, then transformed back into his original form.
"We're getting closer and closer to the Guardians' branch, so you'll see a lot of plague doctors here. Of course, most of them don't take care of patients; they have their own special missions."
"The doctor in charge of patients has a higher position among the doctors in the bird's beak, and they don't have to be exploited like laborers every day."
At this point, James seemed quite proud, but soon he realized that his current situation wasn't much better than that of a so-called laborer.
"If we consider their strength as those of the Disorderly, what meme would they be roughly equivalent to?" Ria was extremely interested in this question.
“Strength is not constant, Kelcha. It’s like someone holding a gun but with poor technique; they still can’t hurt the person using the stones, and might even be killed by the person using the stones.”
But I must say, all the plague doctors—and I mean all of them—are not ones you can handle.
"The existence of the 'bird-beak doctors' is quite unique, and even I don't know the specific reasons. Anyway, we are a group of black-clad angels who worship peace, so could you praise me a couple of times and write me a banner?"
Ria: "No, give me my money back now."
"Can't you just stop talking about that incredibly vulgar money?! How can that compare to us, who are companions of the extraordinary?"
James chuckled awkwardly, afraid that Ria would ask him for money again, and quickly shut his mouth. But soon, he began to worry inexplicably that Ria would go inside and report him, so he simply stuffed a handful of smelly paper into the patient's hand and told Ria to keep quiet in the branch.
"Can't you go take a shower?"
The mask Ria was wearing now had some protective function against poison, but even so, he still smelled an unpleasant odor. He had Little Swarth spit out a bag, put the money in the bag, and then wrapped it tightly with several sheets of white paper. Only then did he feel less uncomfortable.
Little Swarth swallowed the wad of paper, and purple poisonous smoke billowed from the corner of his mouth.
Ria: "..."
He shoved the mythical creature back into his body: "The deal is done. Now that you've returned my money, I can let you off the hook this time, but next time—"
"Shh!"
James saw that Ria was about to say something that would give him a heart attack, so he pulled out another wad of money from his stomach compartment, his hands trembling with heartache.
At that very moment, Little Swarth burst out of Ria's flesh and bit James's arm, like a pendant that he couldn't shake off.
It seems that it strongly agrees with the suggestion to let the plague doctor clean up the sanitation.
"Let go."
"Goo-"
Leisure time passed by so quickly.
Soon, the two crossed the Rosalon Bridge and arrived at what was said to be the location of the Guardians' branch. They got out of the car, and the driverless vehicle drove away by itself, which surprised Ria.
As for the building in front of us, it doesn't look particularly special. The only special thing about it is that it is located in the administrative district of South Adeline, and in a rather remote corner. If it were any more remote, it would probably be in the forest to the southeast.
