Ke-style law enforcement officers

Chapter 427 Self-Warning

Chapter 427 Self-Warning
"Then you two have a good chat, and call me when you're done."

Milo pushed Emma into the office and closed the door behind him.

Then he dashed out of the law enforcement office.

He treated all these messy things as figments of his subconscious imagination, and all he needed to do was maintain his own principles and never get involved.

It was already night.

Milo walked alone on the familiar streets.

He always felt that something was missing.

After fumbling around in his pocket for a while, he finally pulled out half a pack of cigarettes.

After staring at the cigarette pack for a while, he shrugged and lit one.

As the smoke entered his lungs and was exhaled through his mouth and nose, the restless emotions in his mind finally subsided with the momentary intoxication brought by nicotine, and even the pain in the back of his head lessened slightly.

Milo found a slightly cleaner stone bench by the roadside and sat down.

He rolled up his sleeves and carefully examined the cracks that stretched from the back of his hands all the way to his forearms.

These are scars left by Yog Sothos's blood.

So even though the Ring of the Exiled Shadow is gone, interpersonal relationships have changed, and almost all facts that can be altered have been distorted, even though Milo's vision, physique, and power have disappeared, everything about his true self cannot be changed, or rather, the "traces left by the gods" cannot be erased.

The church referred to the cracks on Milo's hands as indelible bloodstains, proof of sin.

He stared at the cracks in his hands and muttered to himself:

"If everything that is happening right now can be considered as what I subconsciously desire, then what remains unaltered should be what I cannot change with my own will, just like the bloodstains of Sothos. As an Outer God, the traces it left behind cannot be erased even in my subjective world of illusion."

"I have to wake up."

Milo rubbed his temples.

This is an abyssal illusion created after subconscious confusion.

He didn't know what he would become in the real world once he became deeply involved.

But Milo could vaguely sense that feeling—that even though he knew everything here was fake, he couldn't escape.

If this situation continues long enough, he will go insane.

The complexity of the Abyss lies in this: Milo plays the role of a "sane madman" in his own world of consciousness, while knowing nothing about the real world.

Everyone he sees here is a product of consciousness, and what he truly cares about are them in the real world. But what he is powerless to do is that even though he has become a Shadow Sequence creature in the real world and he is harming the people around him, Milo doesn't even have the right to know any of it.

He couldn't imagine what he would eventually become if he were trapped in the abyss forever.

……

"and many more……"

A newspaper suddenly drifted by on the street, its headline reporting the daytime incident of Yan seizing a gun and committing murder.

Recalling the tragic shooting that occurred on the street this morning.

Milo suddenly sensed something strange.

“From beginning to end, the Robben family can be considered innocent victims. Even the murderer Robben, who went insane at the end, was bewitched by the raven and became like that. No one would want such a tragedy to happen, and of course I am too.”

"So the Robben family is living a good life in the Abyss Illusion world."

"But even if the beast disease hadn't been triggered, Robben's girl still died..."

Milo looked at the cracks on the back of his hand.

Then he looked at the newspaper on the ground.

Talking to himself:
"Perhaps...perhaps it's not just miracles that cannot be altered."

He stood up slowly.

The previously bewildered look in his eyes gradually turned clear.

"The shooting was neither random nor accidental, nor was it a form of self-torture."

"It's a reminder; my consciousness is alerting and warning me in the abyss."

Milo's breathing gradually became rapid.

He probably understood the whole story.

Leaving aside whether it was a miracle or not, the unexpected death of Robben's daughter can be understood as a manifestation of one's own will resisting the abyss in the real world.

In other words, Milo was reminding himself not to believe anything here. Robben's daughter was dead, and the tragedy of the Robben family was a fact that could not be changed.

……

Milo quickly patted his forehead.

"Quickly think of what else... I definitely didn't leave myself just this one clue, there must be more..."

If there is any real-world miracle that is the most remarkable, then there is only one.

Milo looked up towards the outskirts of the city.

Night had completely enveloped the distant horizon, but the thick clouds could not completely obscure the glow emanating from the clock tower there.

church.

...

Milo knew that the scholars of the ancient contract organization must have unearthed something from the remains of the previous civilization. In fact, Milo had always firmly believed that there must be some kind of superior being, comparable to the gods, deep within the church building that had been under construction for nearly seven years without being fully completed.

They are definitely not the gods of dreams, nor are they superior beings.

They should also be different from the Great Old Ones.

Because the concept of the Great Old Ones is only used by investigators at the University of Michigan in the academic field of the real world, while scholars of the Golden Rule Church use the vague and easily confusing terms "the Ancient Ones" or "the Old Gods".

Even within this abyssal illusion, everything concerning the Church remains unalterable.

So Milo went alone to the church bridge.

Finally, in the prayer square, he met a clergyman of the Golden Rule, who was wearing a white robe, indicating that he was a pastor in the church.

Milo had expected to meet either Defoe or De La Chaux.

But when he saw the pastor's face clearly, he was stunned for a few seconds.

The other person was thin, with deep-set cheeks and eye sockets. Glasses hung on a high nose bridge, and behind the lenses were a pair of clear, light blue eyes, as calm and still as a windless lake.

Milo still doesn't know the man's real name.

But he had heard his nickname countless times before—Raven.

The man who had long been expelled from the Contract Organization in the real world and became a heretic of the Golden Law.

He was the one who manipulated Robben to commit a horrific series of murders in Nanwei City, and he was also the one who unearthed the ancient god's ruins in the desolate mountain south of the town of Icam, even leaving behind a hybrid offspring.

Later, he colluded with Solomon in overseas colonies to create a hunter organization where everyone was equipped with a mysterious weapon.

Milo once felt as if he could never escape the shadow of this person, but in the real world, Raven and his hunter organization have disappeared without a trace for nearly a year.

He never imagined that his "second" meeting with the raven would take place in a subconscious illusion created by his subconscious.

Furthermore, the other party appeared as a pastor of the Golden Rule Church.

……

The raven's first reaction upon seeing Milo was to look up at the thick clouds in the sky.

And his first words weren't some polite, insincere greeting like "Long time no see, Officer," but rather he spoke in a rather cryptic tone:
"Your visit is very ill-timed. It would be best for you to stay at home with your wife and children at this time, sir."

Milo looked up at the sky, just like the other person.

Such overcast skies are the most common sight in Nanwei City, and there's nothing particularly surprising about them.

But Milo could probably understand what the raven meant by "this point in time."

He didn't ask the raven too many complicated questions, because he knew that even if he had many things he wanted to ask the raven face to face, those questions were not something that the raven in front of him, which was just a figment of his subconscious imagination, could answer.

What I need to figure out right now is what my consciousness has left in the abyss, or rather, what it is about to trigger.

So Milo asked the raven:

"Is something about to happen?"

The raven nodded, his expression remaining calm, but then uttered something startling:

"Our era is coming to an end. Before everything is obliterated, you should stay with the people you love."

After speaking, he paused for a few seconds, then added:

"Or, stay with someone who loves you deeply, wouldn't you?"

Milo seemed to be deep in thought.

He looked around.

The usually bustling Prayer Square was deserted at this moment, with only Milo and Raven standing in the vast open space.

The firelight from the church behind them pierced through the night mist, casting long shadows of the two of them that stretched for more than ten meters across the square.

This night was more peaceful and serene than many of the nights in Nanwei City that Milo remembered, without any of the apocalyptic atmosphere that Raven had described.

But he sensed something strange about the scene before him.

On the plaza, under the holy light of the Golden Rule, only he and Raven remained.

There were no other living creatures besides these.

……

Milo calmly replied:

"And what about you? You don't have any family, do you?"

Raven shook his head calmly. He didn't rush to answer Milo's impolite question. Instead, he raised his head and turned his gaze to the sky again. This time, he stared for a long time until the wind in the sky moved the thick, bloated clouds a little. Although the moon still couldn't show a corner, the obscured moonlight finally showed a faint halo.

Upon seeing that sliver of icy moonlight, a smile finally appeared on Raven's gaunt face. He raised his finger and pointed to the sky, saying, "I have finally seen what I've been waiting for."

Milo seemed to be deep in thought.

He vaguely remembered that the hunter team led by Monquia had once recited this proverb—

Even in the long night, I can still see the moonlight.

……

"Please leave, sir, time is running out."

Raven calmly told Milo to leave.

Just as he finished speaking, the moon, which should have gradually revealed itself as the clouds dispersed, suddenly dimmed.

It was as if some enormous object had snatched it away in an instant.

Even without the power of the sense of crisis, Milo felt a chill run through his body for a moment, and cold sweat poured out of his pores.

He had a feeling.

just like…

There is something...

coming soon.
