Ke-style law enforcement officers
Chapter 39 The Examiner
Chapter 39 The Examiner
A week passed in the blink of an eye, and soon it was time for the assessment.
Both the written test and the comprehensive test were held at the Law Enforcement Academy in the eastern part of Nanwei City.
……
The first day's written test was divided into two sessions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, and it went relatively smoothly for Milo.
He certainly couldn't have slept in the exam room as Enid claimed. Although Nero had said he could use tricks to help Milo pass the exam, it would be too outrageous for Milo to hand in a blank paper.
The comprehensive exam will be held the following day after the two exams.
The venue remains the law enforcement academy, as it boasts a highly professional training ground for a wide range of subjects, including shooting, combat, physical fitness, and medical examinations.
This is Milo's first time entering the law enforcement academy.
The country's law enforcement system has been formally established for less than 50 years, so the law enforcement academy buildings in Nanwei City are relatively new compared to other historically significant academies. Overall, it continues the simple and hardcore style that the law enforcement system has always maintained, with clean and strong lines everywhere. You can't see the fancy architectural style that belongs to this era. There are no reliefs, no oil paintings, and no bright colors. Black and gray are the main colors, but there is no sense of lifelessness at all. Instead, it is more solemn.
The candidates who appeared at the examination site were mostly wearing student uniforms belonging to their own academies. The majority were recent graduates from the Law Enforcement Academy, while the majority of the rest came from Nanwei Academy, and some were candidates from surrounding cities where no examination sites were set up.
Early in the morning, before the thick fog had dissipated, one side of the assessment site was already packed with a large number of candidates, who were being divided into groups under the guidance of the law enforcement academy staff, waiting for the assessment.
On the other side of the examination venue, in the tiered seating area, were the invigilating leadership and the onlookers who had successfully secured a spot. Most of those watching were students at various levels who had not yet graduated, and Enid was among them.
Besides the staff and onlookers, there were many figures wearing black trench coats. These were the real law enforcement officers, scattered around the venue. Some were responsible for maintaining order, while others led their assigned students to take the exams in turn.
When Milo entered the examination room on time, almost all the students had already arrived, making him think he was late. However, when he checked the time, there were still a full twenty minutes left before the designated entry time ended.
"Why are they all being done so much earlier?"
He stood in front of the notice board at the edge of the venue, holding the admission ticket he had received the day before, searching for his examination group on the notice board.
Milo suddenly felt someone tap his shoulder, followed by a familiar voice from behind.
"Why are you still standing here? Everyone else has already lined up."
It's Enid.
"Stop messing around, I'm looking for my name." Milo looked at the densely packed list of names on the three-meter-high bulletin board, feeling a bit overwhelmed.
“Here it is, here it is.” Enid pointed to a group in the upper right corner: “I checked it for you, group 23, it should be on the east side of the field.”
"You have sharp eyes, huh? I've been looking for this for ages." Milo squinted and glanced at it; it really was group 23.
"That's because you're in the same group as my senior, Colin. Speaking of which, you're really unlucky. If you're in the same group as him, you might suffer during the group competition~ Hehe~" Enid squinted at Milo with a smug grin.
"I'm not going to waste any more time with you, I'm off." Seeing that almost all the examinees had already lined up on the field, Milo didn't dare to delay any longer and jogged straight towards the east side of the field.
Enid waved her little fist from behind: "Go, Milo!"
……
...
East side of the examination room.
Today, the law enforcement officers, who are also acting as part-time examiners, each led a group of more than ten people, totaling nearly a hundred groups on the field.
The examiners in each group are now verifying the identities of the candidates.
The examiner for Group 23 was a burly male law enforcement officer. The insignia on his collar indicated his status as a chief law enforcement officer. Unlike the other law enforcement officers who wore masks, the man had his face exposed and was beardless. His rough face was deeply etched with two nasolabial folds, making him look extremely dignified.
"Count!"
At the man's command, the candidates in his assessment group quickly called out their numbers one after another.
After the man finished counting, he frowned and glanced at the list in his hand:
"Why is one still missing?"
At this moment, another examiner a few meters away on the left spoke calmly:
"So what if there's one less? After the first round of physical examinations, more than half of the people will be eliminated."
As luck would have it, the person speaking, who was also the examiner for Group 22, was our dear Chief Enforcement Officer Rebecca.
By this time, Rebecca had already organized the candidates in her group and stood at the very front of the line, coldly staring at the group of inexperienced young people in front of her.
"Oh? How come the head of the Chengnan Enforcement Bureau has been summoned to be an examiner?"
The man glanced at Rebecca sideways.
"Isn't the chief of law enforcement from the West City Law Enforcement Office here too?" Rebecca replied casually, still staring at the examinees in her group.
Both of them are chiefs of staff, and they appear to know each other.
When the more than twenty trainees in the two assessment groups heard the conversation between the two examiners, their hearts sank.
Although the comprehensive exam score does not account for a large proportion of the total score, it plays a decisive role. If the comprehensive exam score is too unsatisfactory, the examiners have the authority to cross out your name, which means that your previous written test score is also invalidated.
Although there are clear passing standards for the exam, the examiner's subjective opinion is also a standard for judging the assessment results. The higher the examiner's official rank, the stricter his requirements for the candidates are, because they are selecting their future subordinates and would never allow any incompetent or useless people to sneak into their ranks and drag them down.
"Looks like my group is full of bookworms, each one so small their thighs aren't even as thick as my elbows..." The male examiner glanced at the candidates in his group. Judging from their uniforms, these candidates were mostly not recent graduates of the law enforcement academy, and his expectations immediately plummeted. "Finding good prospects doesn't necessarily mean you'll get them," Rebecca shook her head.
"I don't understand why the assessment system needs to be reformed. Most of the candidates from other colleges will be rejected. It's a complete waste of effort."
The male examiner made a comment.
Holding the list, he called out each name one by one and found the name of the "late" candidate.
"Milo Valrocan".
When Milo's name was called, the room fell silent.
"Hey, I'll just cross that out for you."
The male examiner removed the pen cap to cross Milo's name off the list.
But Rebecca, who was standing to the side, reminded her, "Wait a minute."
She tilted her chin slightly to the left to indicate that the others had arrived.
On the left is Milo, who just arrived.
The male examiner glanced at Milo and repeated the name he had just read: "Milo Valrocan".
"Here," Milo replied immediately.
The male examiner looked Milo up and down, then asked impatiently, "Which academy are you from? Where's your uniform?"
“Not a student,” Milo answered the question bluntly.
The male examiner raised an eyebrow, checked the notes on the list, and then revealed a look of realization:
"He's not a recent graduate, but he has a solid foundation. These days, it's rare to see someone who can be forced into law enforcement assessments."
This is not a compliment at all; it's pure sarcasm.
After all, the threshold for law enforcement assessment is there; applicants must be recent graduates of the corresponding major, and the college they attend must have the corresponding qualifications and level.
Ninety-nine percent of the candidates who disregarded the assessment criteria were the offspring of high-ranking officials and nobles, who used their connections and influence to force their way into the positions. As the chief examiner, the law enforcement officer naturally disapproved of such candidates who broke the rules.
Without him even realizing it, Milo's assessment standards in his eyes had instantly increased by several levels of difficulty.
It's estimated that if Milo performs even slightly below expectations in any of the assessment projects, he'll simply cross Milo's name off the list.
……
But Milo didn't think too much about it. He and Rebecca exchanged a glance and then lined up in the ranks without exchanging any words.
In the queue, Milo quickly overheard some whispers among the surrounding examinees. He couldn't tell who was talking, but he could hear the content very clearly.
"Self-taught candidate? You mean someone who takes the unconventional route?"
"If you ask me, with these connections, why bother with any assessments? It would be so much better if they just packed their bags and moved in when it was time to start."
"What do you know? They just have to go through the motions."
"That's not right. You can go through the motions with the written test, but what about the comprehensive exam? Can he shoot targets? Can he fight? Don't let him die of exhaustion on the field later."
"Not necessarily. There have been specially recruited candidates in every year. Don't underestimate them..."
"Give me a break. What era are we living in? You can't be a law enforcement officer without any professional education and training. You're just here to join the fun."
"Hehe, I think so too."
……
Such strong aggression! Did these people all graduate from the School of Sarcasm and Evil?
Milo stood there, unable to suppress a laugh.
He certainly wouldn't stoop to the level of these little brats.
Although they were all a few years older than him by biological age, Milo subconsciously regarded them as elementary school students because they were all dressed in school uniforms.
……
"Cough cough."
At the front of the line, the examiner coughed twice, signaling everyone to be quiet.
"Listen up, everyone. I'm your group's examiner for today, Charles Winton. From now on, everyone listen up. Anyone who doesn't follow instructions will be disqualified from the assessment and will have to come back next year. Understand?!"
"clear!!"
