Chapter 365 The Repeater

Chapter 365 The Repeater

After Milo's patient explanation, Rick finally gained a basic understanding of what Milo was planning to do next.

In short, it's about replicating Marty's experience in this place, using a third-order spell from a magical tome to try and extract the "trajectory" of Marty's appearance here.

The last time Marty appeared at the academy gates was when Finn took on five opponents at once.

"I'm curious why they had to choose me."

Rick, with his hands in his pockets, asked Milo.

Milo dipped the wooden awl that had nearly chilled Klaus to the bone into the puddles of a street drain, then crouched down and began to draw strange, twisted runes on the sidewalk.

He calmly answered Rick's question: "Anyone else would probably go crazy."

“That’s true,” Rick muttered, then squatted down in the corner, clutching his head. “Be careful, it’s late at night, and it’s not easy to find someone who’s lost their eye.”

But the next second he stood up again and asked in confusion, "So what does that 'trajectory' mean? Will I receive something strange?"

“How right do you think that kid could be?” Milo countered.

"That's true."

Rick crouched down again, clutching his head.

"Squat here, squat here."

After Milo finished the rune totem on the ground, he gestured for Rick to crouch down in the center of the totem.

Rick then moved the hole to a different spot.

Milo, however, was in no hurry. He shook his arms and shoulders, starting his warm-up exercises, while asking:
"Let me ask you a question. When you talk to yourself in your mind, what kind of voice do you hear?"

"Hmm—hmm?" Rick paused for a few seconds.

Milo rephrased it as: "Your inner monologue."

“Oh, I see. An inner monologue, right? That’s definitely my own voice,” Rick replied without hesitation.

However, Milo continued to interrogate him:
Are you sure that's your own voice?

His mysterious and serious question actually stumped Rick, causing Rick's original certainty to waver slightly: "I, uh—I guess so, after all, what we know best is our own voice."

"Okay, let's understand it that way for now."

Milo did not delve deeper into this issue.

After moving his shoulder joints and other upper limbs, he rotated his ankle and hip joints, completing the set of movements he remembered from the beginning of physical education class.

Rick crouched to the side, watching with his heart pounding:

"No, who exactly beat up Marty back then? I get the feeling you're aiming for a full 12 rounds."

“He got beaten up by another kid.” Milo didn’t mention Finn’s name. He noticed the runic patterns on the ground, drawn with sewage, starting to move, and then said to Rick:
"After the spell ends, you may hear something. Note that you can only hear it. I don't know what the sound will be, nor do I know if there will be any pattern to the frequency or number of times it appears. It's also possible that this spell is just a hoax and has no effect at all. After all, I have never used this thing before."

"Trying to trick people? Is that what you mean by luring them here and beating them up?" Rick narrowed his eyes.

"That's pretty much what it means."

bang...

As soon as Milo finished speaking, he punched Rick in the forehead.

He clearly remembered how Finn used to beat Marty up, so replicating it would be no problem at all.

After that punch, the speed at which the water-stained runes on the ground flowed doubled. All the characters seemed to be subjected to gravity in different directions, flowing to various locations and then re-condensing into different patterns of totems. Every move Milo made would cause the rune totems to change, and now the appearance of the totems was completely different from what he had drawn at the beginning.

……

Thus, the scene of a law enforcement officer brutally beating a man in a suit unfolded on the street.

Because Milo was wearing a long black trench coat, even passersby who saw this scene dared not approach to check the situation or intervene. They all avoided him as if he were a plague god.

Two minutes later.

……

"How about it?"

Milo swung his hand, squatted down, and asked Rick.

Rick methodically picked up an eyeball from the ground, blew on it, and stuffed it into his eye socket. Then he groped for a front tooth, tucked the root into his gum, and finally tidied his face before turning to Milo and asking:
"How do I look?"

"You look a little pale, but otherwise you're fine," Milo shrugged.

He didn't use his full strength, nor did he use his spiritual vision, but for Rick's half-dead body to withstand being beaten for two minutes was already a miracle. You have to know that even if you only consider Milo's pure physical strength, he has spied on countless undead over the past year, and the increase in his pure physical strength is hard to estimate. A normal person would probably have their forehead blown off if they took a slap like that.

Moreover, the Holy Communion sacrifice even allowed Milo's limbs to directly confront the embodiment of the Outer God's will.

It's hard to imagine how Rick, a half-dead man, could be unharmed.

...By this time, the water stains on the ground had completely evaporated, leaving no trace.

The ritual has been completed.

But whether it will be successful or not, Milo is not sure.

"I heard."

Rick's eyes began to show a hint of horror.

His hands were clenched into fists, his knuckles were white and trembling slightly.

Milo took a step back and glared at the few street thugs who were just hanging around the corner.

After the latter slunk away in fright, Milo stared at Rick warily.

Rick's reaction was not unexpected by Milo. In fact, even as a half-zombie, he still possessed his own consciousness and soul, and his sanity was still capable of collapsing. It all depended on whether the magic applied to him exceeded his capacity to withstand it.

Milo, gripping the handle of the revolver at his waist, calmly looked at Rick, who was standing trembling with his eyes rolled back. He knew what would happen to an ordinary human after their sanity was depleted, but he didn't know what a zombie would become. If necessary, he could shoot Rick dead.

Fortunately, this situation only lasted for about a minute before it stopped.

Rick's eyes returned to normal, and his body stopped trembling. He rubbed his eyes, turned to Milo, and said:
"I did hear some strange noises."

Milo shrugged, as if to say, "Then you fucking say it."

Rick seemed dazed, his brow furrowed as if he were trying hard to catch the sounds only he could hear: “No one is speaking, but I heard the sound of metal clashing, not heavy objects, but a very clear sound… It should be the sound of metal chains lightly touching, but strangely, there’s a lot of background noise… Didn’t you say this ritual allows you to eavesdrop on Marty’s inner monologue?”

“That’s what it says in the first semester of elective course, how am I supposed to know that?” Milo shrugged.

“Wait! I heard it again, but this time it’s different. This time it’s a sound coming from a very, very far place.” Rick stretched out his hand and made a strange grasping motion in the air, as if trying his best to capture something. He closed his eyes and frowned. “Strange, these fragmented sounds sound a little familiar… but it’s like they’re blocked by something, so I can’t hear them clearly at all.”

His expression was somewhat troubled, because that sense of familiarity was both near and far, sometimes very close, and sometimes very far away.

Milo stood aside, staring at Rick.

He felt that this spell was unlikely to have any good effect, at least for now, as it did not provide any valuable feedback.

What was that sound of chains? A familiar noise.

It's possible that these are just figments of the mind caused by fluctuations in SAN values.

In short, this is inconsistent with the description in the text. According to the text, Rick should be able to hear some inner monologues.

Milo waved his hand, shaking the wooden awl in his hand:
"That's alright then. We probably need to change our approach and use this wooden awl as a starting point to investigate the city guards."

But just as he was calling Rick to return to the law enforcement office, he suddenly heard Rick's voice behind him, in a strange tone he had never used before, carrying a kind of extreme disgust and impulse that was being strongly suppressed:
"Witch, damned witch! Being in the same classroom as her is torture. Everything has been defiled by her. It's disgusting. Just thinking about the stillborn fetus that was pulled out of her makes me want to vomit. She should be burned alive! Burned alive! A freak from out of town!"

……

Milo stopped and turned to look at Rick.

Rick's eyes were initially filled with endless malice, but the next second they turned to astonishment.

He stood there stunned for three seconds, staring wide-eyed at Milo: "That wasn't my intention."

But the next second, that same ferocious look reappeared on his face, and he cursed through gritted teeth:

“Burn her! Galid, you outsider, you brought evil to this city and into the college, you disgusting slut, you must have offered your body to the devil as a plaything and are pregnant with the devil’s child, you should be burned, roasted, and chopped up!”

Rick covered his mouth, his face turning shocked once again.

It's clear that even he himself doesn't quite understand what these hateful words mean.

He was simply repeating those words under the influence of some special force, reciting them aloud.

Yes, he seemed to have become a broken record.

……

He tried to loosen his grip and asked Milo in a normal tone, "How long will this last?..."

But the next second his tone immediately switched back to that violent and hateful state, and he pointed at Milo and roared, "Burn her!"

Rick was so frightened that he immediately covered his mouth again.

He was terrified that Milo would pull out a pistol and shoot him at that moment.

Because his condition looked too much like someone on the verge of madness.

However, as one of the few people who could understand the meaning of those few sentences that did not belong to Rick, Milo knew that these sentences came from Marty and were Marty's true thoughts.

Regardless of where he learned everything about Kai, this idea drove him and his classmates to commit violence against Kai in the academy.

Upon thinking of this, Milo's expression instantly turned colder.
