Ke-style law enforcement officers

Chapter 275 Important clues

Chapter 275 Important clues
"That's not necessarily true. Anyway, family disputes are not my responsibility, and what's going to happen will happen."

Milo answered Justin's question honestly.

If it's just a dispute between husband and wife, the law enforcement agency really won't get involved.

“Okay.” Justin gave a wry smile.

"Then it can only be attributed to those bizarre theories. David has been obsessed with those theories for years, and perhaps his thinking has been subtly distorted. Regardless of what outrageous things Asenas did to him before her death, she is the one who has lost her life. There's no point in bringing those things up anymore. They're harmful, so-called mysticism..."

"I think it's still necessary to investigate this further."

Milo, however, did not share Justin's view.

He was convinced that there were definitely some untold stories about the Derby couple, and that Arcenas's actions during her lifetime could not be ignored just because of her death. Whether she was a victim or a perpetrator, he had to find out the truth.

"Based on your understanding of the couple, are they prone to making enemies in their lives? I mean, making enemies with dangerous people, or infringing on the interests of others," Milo asked Justin.

“Not really.” Justin shook his head. “The couple inherited the estate left by Uncle Derby. You could say they’re living a life of leisure, but at least they don’t have to struggle for a living. David spends most of his time on literary creation. As for Asenas, she’s a mysterious woman. We don’t even know who her social circle is, let alone who she gets involved with.”

"They have no worries about food and clothing and do not have any conflicts of interest with outsiders."

Milo jotted down some brief information points on a piece of white paper.

Judging from Justin's description, the couple's married life definitely had some problems, and it was certainly not harmonious.

It's not hard to see that Justin is on David's side, because David sent him a distress signal. As for why the person who called for help ended up becoming a murderer, that's worth considering.

However, at the level of the victims, Milo had very little information about Arcenas. Even David's old friend, Justin, used the words "rumored" and "supposedly" most often when referring to Arcenas.

It's clear that this woman from Innsmouth isn't very popular.

……

“Before you came here, David told us that if he didn’t kill Asenath, he would be the one to die, and he claimed it was an act of self-defense. What do you think of that?” Milo tapped the table with his fingernail.

“I must clarify that this is not an attempt to exonerate David’s murderous acts, but believe me, Asenas did indeed torment him terribly—I mean, mentally. He spent a long time in fear and anxiety. Perhaps he was driven mad by Asenas. In our last few meetings, he told me countless times that Asenas was a devil or a witch, that she wanted to possess his body and expel his soul, and so on. Although it sounds strange, if you don’t believe me, you can go to the East Manor and ask the dismissed servants. They should have seen David crying and fleeing the manor in the middle of the night many times. It’s absolutely true,” Justin said with utmost seriousness.

“A witch,” Milo muttered.
"According to David Derby, he believes his wife harbors some kind of malice towards him, or possesses his body or something, right? Then why does he keep returning to the manor after fleeing it?"

“I’m baffled too.” Justin shook his head. “I’ve suggested to him countless times that we end this twisted marriage, even if it means letting that weird woman take some of the assets. He agreed with my plan every time, but every time the appointed time came, he would inexplicably change his mind, tell me that he was impulsive, and beg me to forget his previous crazy talk.”

"I really don't understand what this guy is thinking. Maybe those mystical theories really corrupted his mind, leading him into some kind of delusional crisis, making him think that his wife harbors some kind of malice towards him. Poor guy, in order to create better horror literature, he has been immersed in studying those strange literatures and historical events, dreaming of one day writing a masterpiece. If, if I had stopped his thoughts earlier, maybe this tragedy wouldn't have happened."

Justin kept sighing. He asked Milo if he could go visit David.

But Milo only allowed him to glance at David through the glass of the interrogation room's iron door.

……

In the dimly lit interrogation room, David's hands were locked to the table.

Compared to his initial excitement when he was brought back, David was much calmer now. He stared at the table with a calm, even somewhat blank, gaze, without saying a word, and there was no trace of emotional fluctuation on his face.

Even his closest friend Justin felt a strong sense of unfamiliarity when he saw David looking like this.

Justin looked at David, who stood there blankly in the dimly lit interrogation room: "Maybe he really has gone mad."

Milo shrugged. "Maybe not, who knows."

He glanced down at the note in his hand, then suddenly looked up at Justin and asked, "So in your opinion, it was those mystical texts that distorted your old friend's mind, causing him to have some non-existent delusions, which led to this tragedy, right?"

"...That's the only possibility, isn't it? To ask you to believe that David deliberately murdered Asenas for some other purpose is too far-fetched. In my memory, he's the kind of coward who would faint at the sight of blood," Justin said.

"Um--"

Milo nodded thoughtfully, then casually mentioned:
When was the last time David visited you?

“At the end of last year, we made an appointment to go to the hospital for a check-up,” Justin replied without hesitation.

"Where is the meeting place?" Milo pressed.

“At my home,” Justin replied. “The place I live right now, in the 84th Parish in the west of the city.”

Milo immediately narrowed his eyes:
"understood."

He then asked Justin, "Do you remember which hand David used to write with? As far as I know, he seems to be left-handed."

"Left-handed?" Justin frowned and shook his head repeatedly. "No, no, he's right-handed. This guy's left hand is stiff and awkward, like it's crippled. How could he be left-handed?"

Upon hearing this, Milo glanced deeply at David at the back of the interrogation room, then turned back to Justin and said:

“Thank you very much for your cooperation, Mr. Joffrey. You have provided many important clues.”
