Chapter 239 Conditions
It was rare for the sun to come out after the rain, but in reality, the sunlight did little to dispel the gloom in Nanwei City. Under the blazing sun, the canal that flowed from the northwestern glacier still exuded a chilling aura.

Especially when the ripples on the river turned into a boiling state, a sense of unease instantly spread in everyone's hearts, except for Milo.

……

"I'm afraid we'll have to pay a price to get this ancient being out of this area."

These are the exact words that Reverend Defoe said to Milo and Investigator C after the negotiations concluded.

Compared to the beginning, the once energetic old man now appears somewhat tired and weak.

“I don’t think that’s a good idea,” Investigator C immediately retorted.

However, Defoe did not respond to his words, but instead turned his gaze to Milo:
"It believed it had suffered a great humiliation."

“I wholeheartedly agree with that,” Milo nodded.

He was fully aware of what he had done in the illusionary world, and it was indeed a great disgrace for an ancient being who considered himself a god.

"So what price does it want us to pay?" Milo shrugged. "Although I don't think it has the right to demand a price."

“Believe me, the negotiations are not meaningless.” Defoe stroked the golden tree totem on his forearm and said to Milo, “Initially, it wanted you and this investigator to be punished accordingly.”

"What do you mean by punishment?" Milo raised an eyebrow.

Investigator C seamlessly transitioned in: "Voluntarily becoming its servant."

“I don’t think that makes any sense.” Milo shook his head decisively.

“That’s how I responded to it too,” Defoe said calmly. “It turns out that force can make people reasonable, and the Ancient One is no exception. It made concessions, saying that its only Familia in the human world is still in Nanwei City, and it has no reason to leave like this… Well, given that it currently has no chance to develop other Familias in Seven Valleys, the investigator next to me should know what I’m talking about.”

“We turned the area around the waters where it was located into a no-man's-land,” Investigator C answered frankly.

"So what does it want? Does it want me to register it in Nanwei City? To find a pond to keep it in?" Milo shrugged: "Don't worry, it won't even get a place in a latrine."

No sooner had he finished speaking than the river water under the church bridge began to boil again.

But no shadow jumped out of the water.

“No, it wants to take that member of its kin, because he is the only person who has offered sacrifices to it in the past ten years. This is its final condition,” Defoe said calmly.

“Why don’t you go back and tell him again that the deaths of these dozens of people today should either be attributed to it or to that member of the clan. One of them, master and servant, will have to go to the gallows,” Milo replied definitively.

Investigator C patted Milo on the shoulder from behind: "I'm rooting for you."

“Thank you, but I don’t want a man bumping into me from behind.” Milo nodded.

Defoe sighed.

He gently rubbed the golden tree totem on his forearm, shook his head, and said to Milo, "Young enforcer, do not attempt to kill the ancients. It is a grave crime, and you do not want to pay that price."

"I don't really know much about this."

Milo shrugged.

To be honest, he wasn't really interested in knowing either.

If anyone else had said this to him, he might have listened with interest, but a charlatan telling him that killing the Elders was a grave sin only fueled Milo's rebellious spirit.

He couldn't stand such lowly nonsense.

……

However, after calming down, Milo thought about it again. "But it's not entirely impossible to talk about it."

He suddenly curled the corner of his mouth:
"The problem is that we really don't know where its familiar is hiding. I think if it could tell us where its familiar is hiding, things might be a little simpler. I can go and bring its familiar over, provided that it keeps its promise and leaves Nanwei City."

"Ah this."

"Ah this."

Dillah Shaw and Investigator C uttered a hesitant "Ah, this" almost simultaneously.

The latter was surprised that Milo had given in so quickly, after all, Milo's attitude had been quite tough just a minute before.

The former, who knew Milo better, immediately realized what Milo was up to.

Dillah Shaw spoke:
"Excuse me, everyone, but I think if Mr. Valrokan had found that family member earlier, he would have carried out the execution of the law enforcement officer's power to the fullest extent, and that family member would not have been able to come back alive."

He said this to Defoe, to point out Milo's character, lest the priest be deceived.

“Hey, but I’m also a person of my word. At least all our previous collaborations have been quite pleasant, haven’t they?” Milo immediately cut off Dirasha’s words and said:

"And don't forget, at this critical juncture, my colleagues and superiors are all tracking that familiar. To be rational, I am the only one who has a chance to bring the familiar out of Nanwei City alive, isn't that right?"

"..."

Upon hearing this, both Dirac and Defoe fell into deep thought.

Milo spoke a great truth.

Ultimately, the Nanwei city is still under the control of the law enforcement system. Even for the church, it is extremely difficult to find and protect the familiars before the law enforcement officers do, while Milo, as a law enforcement officer, can accomplish this much more easily.

“So, I have no choice but to believe you.” Defoe was quite straightforward, at least outwardly so. He released his grip on the golden tree totem and then asked Milo:
"So, what are your conditions, Officer?"

Milo secretly marveled at the old fox's keen sense of smell, then narrowed his eyes and whispered to Defoe:
"After finding the clan, I must personally deliver the person into its hands; that is the only condition."

"May I ask what the true purpose of this condition is?" Defoe asked politely.

Milo readily replied:

"No."

……

...

The negotiations went more smoothly than originally expected.

Milo accepted Geraqi's terms for retreat, and Geraqi reluctantly accepted Milo's baffling terms in return.

In short, no second serious incident occurred on the church bridge, and the negotiations ended amicably.

After the negotiations ended, Defoe was helped back to the Star Clock Tower by Dirac and others. As he left, he prayed shakily, his body seemingly growing weaker.

Meanwhile, Milo, carrying the crucial information relayed by Defoe, returned to the city of Nanwei without stopping.

……

Meanwhile, on a hillside more than a kilometer away, old Theon watched as Milo and Investigator C left the Church Bridge unharmed before slowly putting away the Whitworth sniper rifle that he had set up.
