Chapter 237 Invitation
Chapter 237 Invitation
The so-called "negotiation" is not like what Milo currently understands, where everyone finds a quiet and comfortable place to sit down, each person expresses their views, and at the end, they say "who agrees and who disagrees" or something like that.
The negotiations took place on the church bridge on the outskirts of Nanwei City.
It is located in the area where the bridge spans the downstream of the canal.
The method was that an old man with white hair was in charge of hosting it.
He stood at the bridgehead, adopting a very devout kneeling posture, and began to mutter a series of golden rules and maxims, which were probably familiar to the Nanwei people—"Born of the blood of the old gods, fear the blood of the old gods," and so on.
The old man in charge of the ceremony was wearing a white church robe; the two had met briefly before.
It was Pastor Daniel Defoe, who took up his post at the Star Tower of the church.
As we all know, the church is essentially a top-notch academic organization, so a person who can reach the level of a pastor in the church is most likely to be an outstanding intellectual.
Milo was very curious about what kind of negotiation they planned to use with Grazie.
Normally, there is no common language between humans and these ancient rulers or beings. The will of ordinary humans is insufficient to understand the language of the ancients, and the ancients disdain to engage in dialogue with humans.
From their perspective, they consider themselves gods, even though they are fundamentally different from gods, but that does not prevent this mentality from existing.
Although Gladgill is a weakling, at least that's how it seems for now.
But it was, after all, an ancient thing that had lived for a long time. The knowledge accumulated in its mind was beyond the capacity of any human brain. To communicate with Gladgill, perhaps only a visionary would be able to do so. But Defoe didn't seem like a visionary at all.
Milo is certain of this.
Because last time Defoe failed to spot the exile "Maggie Green" who was with Milo.
So how does he plan to negotiate with Geraki...?
Milo didn't understand.
……
The church bridge had already been closed off in advance, and no unrelated pedestrians were passing by.
There weren't many people present at the so-called negotiation site. Besides Defoe, De La Chaux, and about twenty gray-robed church officials, there were only two outsiders: Milo and Investigator C.
Defoe knelt at the bridgehead, recited the church's proverbs with utmost devotion, then clasped his hands together, made fists, and placed them on his forehead, remaining silent in that position.
Milo had no idea what this guy was up to.
……
Investigator C, who was standing nearby, kept his eyes on the surface of the canal below.
His eyes were alert, and he dared not relax for a moment.
Clearly, this advisor from the Miskatonic River basin did not have much trust in the church.
According to him, his university and the church have diametrically opposed academic philosophies, especially in their attitudes toward the Old Ones.
One obvious point is that the investigators call the thing in the river the Great Old Ones, while the Church calls it the Ancient Ones. The meaning of the words is not so important; what is important is the stubborn attitude of both sides towards a single name.
“The despicable believers dare not go out in the rain; they only dare to face the darkness of the world when the sun is blazing.” Investigator C looked at the church members on the bridge, showing them no respect whatsoever.
"No wonder he's a top university student; even his retorts are so refined."
Milo grinned.
They looked at Dillah Shaw with schadenfreude.
Thinking to myself, you bastards are used to throwing your weight around in Nanwei City. It's time for one or two rude outsiders to come and teach you a lesson, otherwise you'll really start thinking you're the big shots of Nanwei City.
Unfortunately, this level of understanding was far from enough to break through Dillah's defenses; he even nodded in agreement to Investigator C.
“I agree with your point of view, but this is a necessary factor to facilitate negotiations. It hates strong light, so we should talk to it under the blazing sun, doesn’t that make sense?”
When he got to the second half of the sentence, Dirac turned his gaze to Milo.
Milo, however, was completely focused on the surface of the canal beneath his feet. He glanced up at Dillah Shaw:
"Don't drag me into this. This is your argument. I won't get involved until you two fight to the death."
Milo pointed to the law enforcement officer badge on his chest, meaning that the criminal investigation team only handles homicide cases and not civil disputes.
...
"also."
Dillah smiled faintly:
Investigator C, meanwhile, glanced at Reverend Defoe at the bridgehead, then turned to Milo and asked, "Do you think Gladge is really negotiating with him?"
Milo pressed two fingers against his neck to feel his pulse, then nodded: "I can only be sure it's under this bridge, but whether it's chatting with that pastor or sleeping, I can't say for sure."
Investigator C leaned closer to Milo and asked in a low voice, "Is this also one of your special abilities? Sensing the presence of the Great Old Ones?"
"No, no, no, this is a man's sixth sense, you know?" Milo denied it outright.
He understands one principle very well.
When someone is labeled as "special," they are not far from ruining their life.
"I see."
Investigator C nodded, lowering his voice even further, and said in a low, buzzing tone, "Would you be interested in taking a trip to the Miskatonic River basin? I guarantee you won't be disappointed."
“As far as I know, the last person who went to your university came back and became eccentric, spending all his time researching random things.” Milo shrugged, not showing much interest.
But investigator C persisted:
“That’s because he went astray. I hope you understand that our entire faculty, our philosophy and stance are 100% on the side of human civilization. Miskatonic has seen too many tragedies caused by the Great Old Ones. This world needs someone to stand up and stop the invasion of darkness.”
“You did speak quite well.” Milo nodded noncommittally, almost as a perfunctory response to Investigator C’s question.
Regardless of whether Investigator C's sincerity is genuine, Milo will not expose herself to too many people.
Don't forget the most important thing—the rule that visionaries hunt each other.
He always kept in mind the Scarlet Witch's instructions to Milo.
In fact, for Milo to take the initiative to confront the Ancients was already a suicidal act. Even if he didn't die at the hands of the Ancients, his identity as a Visionist would soon be discovered by his hidden kind.
