Chapter 206 Father and Son

Chapter 206 Father and Son

"The early morning air in Nanwei City was shrouded in a rather unfriendly haze. The buildings here were antique, but they also inherited the aloofness of the previous era, much like when I last arrived in this land..."

The sound of the train wheels colliding and rubbing against the rails continued incessantly.

But the slight vibration did not affect the handwriting of the man inside the carriage.

He recorded what he saw and heard along the way in his notebook.

At that moment, the locomotive sounded a piercing whistle.

After a long and arduous 20-hour journey, the man was finally able to see the outline of Nanwei City shrouded in mist outside the car window.

He slowly stood up, carefully adjusted his tie and cuffs in front of the mirror on the carriage door, and then put his notebook and pen into his pocket.

I packed up some other personal belongings and put them into my suitcase.

He paused for a few seconds before closing the suitcase.

After a moment's thought, he took out a pistol pouch from his briefcase and secured it to the inside of his coat. Then he took out a silver badge and fastened it above his formal attire on the left side of his chest.

This circular badge consists of ears of wheat on the left and right sides and a book shape in the middle.

The top of the book is engraved with an exquisite M-shaped totem, and the bottom edge is labeled with the year 1690 in Arabic numerals.

The outermost edge of the badge is etched with the words "Miskatonic University".

……

The train slowly pulled into Innsmouth Station.

The man from Miskatonic University did not stay overnight in the town as his professor had suggested, because his itinerary was already behind schedule. He could only hope that the investigation would go smoothly and that he might have the chance to taste Innsmouth's seafood delicacies when he left Nanwei City.

As the man boarded the carriage that took him directly to the city, he gazed intently at the canals he could see along the way, his eyes calm and deep.

This great river meanders down from the far north, passing through the Seven River Valley, where it cuts through Nanwei City before heading straight for the southeastern sea.

The man sat in the bumpy carriage, gazing at the canal for a long time.

He took out his notebook and pen again from his pocket and wrote:

“Since time immemorial, water has been a symbol of life. It runs through the entirety of human civilization and carries the legacy of some even more ancient civilizations. I hope it will not bring disaster to this city. I sincerely hope so.”

……

...

The murmuring stream flows into the vast ocean.

Deep within this sea, on those once mysterious colonial islands, another pair of profound eyes are now watching the direction of Nanwei City.

This is the fourth month that the ravens have stayed in the colony.

For some reason, he had to leave the inland area.

The people there pushed him so hard that Raven had many plans that he couldn't put into practice.

But compared to three years ago, the raven's eyes no longer held confusion or bewilderment.

After that night's conversation with strangers, many of the mysteries that had plagued Raven's academic career were solved, and those that had troubled him in the past no longer existed.

Whether it was the church's covenant organization or the teacher's Monsis school, the raven no longer confined itself to any particular academic ideology.

He found a piece of driftwood in the vast ocean, and his vision was now clear. All he needed to do next was to clear away the obstacles on the right path he had chosen, one by one.

……

“Fear of the blood of the old gods…” Raven stood on an ancient altar on the island.

Above the archipelago, a fog dozens of times thicker than that of Nanwei City, shrouded the area.

Behind him, countless people dressed in Solomon military uniforms were searching and exploring in the dense forest.

They excavated all the ancient tombs in this mysterious sea area and relied on the captured local natives to decipher the inscriptions on the tombstones to screen and identify all the graves.

The same thing isn't just happening on this island.

The Solomon Gang did the same thing on all the outlying islands of the colony.

They held in their hands proverbs written by ravens.

What they are searching for is the grave of a scholar who was exiled in the last era.

The scholar's name is "Finich Wilfred".

……

The archipelago lies far to the east of Nanwei City.

Logically, this place should have received the sun's rays earlier than Nanwei City.

However, the fog obscured the warm sun in the sky, making the archipelago appear as dark as dusk.

Just like the current living conditions of the indigenous people here.

Their generations-old farmland was trampled, and the forest idols they worshipped were destroyed.

From the moment the colonial army set foot on this land, all the indigenous civilizations that lived in this sea disintegrated in an instant, and even the self-contained city-states on the larger islands were not spared.

No group or individual could stop the colonial army's advance. Ships sailing from the West brought all sorts of terrible weapons and carried back abundant resources, wiping out and destroying everything here.

The royal family and their people, far inland, believed that the army had opened up a new world here and that the people on this sea were living the same lives as them.

However, the fact is that the civilization that humanity has evolved to this day has been completely rejected here.

The primal wildness hidden deep within human genes was unleashed to the fullest extent.

Plunder, massacre, and all sorts of other acts ran rampant on this once peaceful and tranquil sea.

Without anyone realizing it, the seeds of hatred have been quietly sown.

……

On the altar, the raven gazed calmly westward.

A burly, tall creature covered in hideous bone spurs slowly climbed up from below the altar.

This creature had thick, long limbs and a basic skeletal framework of primates, but it was larger than any primate currently existing in the world, even exceeding the giant skeletons unearthed by archaeologists in the far north.

Its exposed, pale skin was covered with many grotesque scars, with almost no inch of skin intact. From each scar, a hard bone spur extended out, making it an incredibly horrifying sight.

Its body was so large that there was no place for it to stand on the top of the altar. It could only use its long claws to hook onto the frame of the altar and stick its huge head, which was covered with eyeballs, to the top of the altar.

……

The raven slowly turned around, reached out, and gently stroked the creature's forehead.

The tone was calm and gentle:
"Don't be impatient, my child. The hunt is underway. It's not time for you to bare your fangs yet. Soon... Trust me, my apprentice will bury the Visionary's remains in this land, and then we will return to our homeland."
