Ke-style law enforcement officers
Chapter 203 Consultant
Chapter 203 Consultant
"Do the dead return to the world as something else?"
The first thing that popped into Milo's mind was the strange man he and Rebecca encountered at the patient shelter in the suburbs.
The strange man draped in a black shroud.
The strange creature was shot twice, with the flintlock musket bullet even piercing its skull.
But just when Milo and Rebecca thought they had dealt with the monster, it woke up again, and the two injured people had no choice but to escape with Daisy.
Since then, Milo has never seen the strange man again, nor has he heard any similar rumors.
That strange person vanished without a trace.
……
According to Robben's ghostly memories, the strange man was chosen by Raven from among the mummies in the patient shelter; he had already died in the great plague five years ago.
But the raven injected the corpse with a special liquid, "reviving" it.
He used this so-called ability to come back from the dead to drive the mentally broken Robben to carry out a series of massacres and eye-gouging atrocities in his place.
……
Until recently, Milo saw the strange severed hand soaking in formalin in the Castor Lady's collection room.
Grace said she bought it at auction on the black market.
It's the black market, Solomon Islands, and ravens again.
It seems that everything that happens around Milo is inextricably linked to that man.
Although Milo only saw Raven in the dreams of the dead, his shadow seemed to have always loomed over Nanwei City and had never left.
...
"The Seven Valley incident has never been made public. The information I have is entirely based on what the official advisor told me verbally."
Charles took a towel and washed his face with the basin of water that Henry had prepared in advance.
He said to Milo:
"But the advisor didn't go into details. He only mentioned that some illogical things were happening in the Seven Valleys—the line between life and death was becoming blurred, and things that shouldn't exist in the human world were raging in the valley. That's what he said."
“You certainly won’t be satisfied with such misleading statements,” Milo replied calmly.
"Back then, I hadn't yet become the scoundrel in Eric's eyes. You should know, a spirited young law enforcement officer always has... a sense of honor, believing that the scythe of judgment hanging on the ceiling is a symbol of justice."
Charles chuckled self-deprecatingly: "At the time, I felt that if something terrible happened in the Seven Valleys, there was a chance it would travel down the river to Nanwei City. As a law enforcement officer, I had a duty to investigate what was going on there, for the sake of the city and for the sake of my family."
As Charles uttered those words, Eric's shadow on the wall slowly turned its head.
"You went to the Seven Valleys?" Milo raised an eyebrow.
Charles calmly wrung out the towel, leisurely walked to the windowsill, hung it on the drying rack, then shook the water off his hands, leaned against the windowsill, lit a cigarette, and took a deep drag.
“I did go, and I still regret it to this day.”
In the room, all eight people, including Milo, had their eyes fixed on Charles.
"What happened there?" Milo asked.
"A massacre."
Charles replied calmly:
"A team of men in black trench coats carried out a brutal massacre in a village on the banks of the River Severn. Men, women, the elderly, and children—no living creature was spared. Not content with simply blasting skulls open, they also dismembered and burned the bodies. The fires burned for three whole days until the village was completely reduced to ashes."
Everyone in the room was startled. Milo frowned:
"Black trench coat..."
“Yes, the outfit you’re wearing.” Charles grinned, revealing a sinister and bleak smile: “Enforcer.”
“That’s impossible.” Milo shook his head.
“Nothing is impossible!” Charles’s voice suddenly rose sharply: “Order, justice, all bullshit, the scythe of judgment, all rubbish, we are just tools in the hands of those at the top, tools to kill.”
Charles's eyes were bloodshot, and his gaze was menacing.
Milo looked at the agitated man before him and asked in a low voice, "You witnessed it with your own eyes..."
"I set those severed limbs on fire with my own hands."
Charles gave a wan smile:
“They discovered my whereabouts and gave me two choices: take off my black clothes and join the Southern Expeditionary Colonial Army, or help them find out everything about that village.”
……
...
The room fell into a long, deathly silence.
Neither Milo nor Charles spoke again.
Only the damp, cold wind rushing in from outside the window kept flapping against Milo's long black trench coat, making a rustling sound.
Charles sat crouching by the windowsill, smoking a cigarette with his head down.
At this moment, he had none of the imposing presence of a law enforcement officer; all that remained was dejection and depravity.
Milo saw in him a shattered faith, a faith in the Scythe of Judgment.
Perhaps, ten years ago, his world, like Eric's, was black and white. He firmly believed that his hands, wielding a sharp blade, could uphold justice. But from the moment he set fire to the remains of the dead, those hands were no longer clean.
Milo suddenly understood why Eric had followed his brother onto the path of a law enforcement officer, only to part ways with him halfway through.
In Charles's mind, the black trench coat had long lost its meaning.
He had already witnessed the cruelty of those behind the law enforcement badge.
He might conclude that his brother's disappearance was also due to the death of his colleagues.
To cover up certain truths, the higher-ups made Eric disappear forever, just like the village on the banks of the Severn River.
……
However, Milo was not satisfied with a story told by a drunkard:
"I want to know more."
Charles shook his head: "Then you may be disappointed. They only dragged me into this massacre because they were afraid I would expose things. How many secrets do you think I could possibly know?"
"Why was that massacre carried out? What happened in that village?" These were the questions Milo was eager to know.
However, Charles was unaware of these things: "I am not qualified to know these things. After the massacre, they detained me in the Seven Valley for six months under the pretext of assisting in the investigation, and only released me back to Nanwei City after confirming that I had no problems. The first thing I did upon returning to Nanwei City was to accept the appointment from the higher-ups and be promoted to Chief of the Law Enforcement."
"Didn't you say that the information was given to you by an advisor sent by your superiors? Who is the advisor?" Milo pressed.
"He never mentioned his name, only revealing in conversation that he came from a university called Miskatonic."
