Chapter 182 In the Rain
Chapter 182 In the Rain
"Why didn't you say something so important sooner?" Milo wrote Aya Ferguson's name on the white paper, then continued to ask:
"So, this lamplighter lady, she put your magic leaf plan into action?"
“She said she has some connections outside the city and thinks this is feasible, so she went out of the city earlier today to discuss it with her former boss.” Yan nodded.
"The former boss?" Milo twirled his pen.
“Before becoming the lamplighter, she worked as a casino dealer in Arden Village and other similar places,” Yan replied.
Adding to Yan's previous description, Milo immediately pictured Aya in a croupier's uniform in his mind. However, he did not show any lewd expression on the surface. He casually scribbled a couple of lines on the white paper with his pen, signaling Yan to continue.
“Aya believes that with the city guards and lamplighters acting as intermediaries, it would be easier to smuggle contraband into the city and distribute it for sale. She planned to tell her former boss about this idea, but she hasn’t returned since she left yesterday,” Yan said solemnly.
Milo scratched his head with his pen cap, a strange expression on his face: "Were you deliberately lowering your voice to create a tense atmosphere just now?"
"Is it obvious?" Yan blinked.
“Hmm.” Milo nodded: “Speak normally.”
“Okay, sorry buddy, the atmosphere here is too oppressive. I unconsciously started to imagine myself as some strange criminals.” Yan cleared his throat and sat up straight again. “Anyway, it’s been almost 10 hours since our agreed meeting time, and she still hasn’t come back. I suspect something might have happened to her.”
"Just because of that?"
Milo looked at his friend speechlessly and said earnestly, "Dude, ask yourself honestly, in the past, haven't there been many women who disappeared from your life in this silent way? I call them 'good women who are infinitely gentler than those crazy women who slap you and kick you out'."
"No, no, no, no, Aya isn't that kind of woman," Yan kept shaking his head.
“Hey, I’ve heard that phrase a lot, only the subject is different,” Milo said, pointing at Yan’s mouth.
“No, it really isn’t. Before she left, she told me that even if things didn’t go well, she would definitely come back to me. And I had a feeling that her trip wasn’t necessarily safe. I saw a dagger in her bag… Anyway, something must have happened, otherwise she wouldn’t have broken her promise.” Yan’s statement was somewhat incoherent. “Also, there’s another thing that proves she didn’t leave without saying goodbye. Her mother came to the city to see her today, and it was something she had arranged beforehand. Do you understand what I mean? She must have encountered something that prevented her from returning to the city.”
"Just a moment, just a moment."
Milo detected a strange taste.
He had seen countless versions of stories about Yan's conflicts with women, and these stories were all clichéd and similar, with little difference in the end result.
But he had never seen such an attitude in Yan.
In other words, he seemed to have a tiny bit of anxiety and urgency.
Is it...
"You two are in love?"
Milo asked this question with a strong sense of self-reflection.
At least two minutes ago, he would have thought the question was stupid.
However, Yan's reaction made him suspect this factor, because Yan was a man who had been dumped countless times, and in all those times, he had never once gone to the police station to report the other party's disappearance out of concern. Not even once.
"In love?" Yan was taken aback by Milo's question. He even thought about it seriously for a few seconds before firmly shaking his head.
"Probably not, she wasn't in the rain."
"Uh...what?"
Milo completely failed to understand the meaning of Yan's last sentence.
“In the rain.” He repeated himself seriously.
“Hmm.” Milo nodded, indicating that this was the part he didn’t understand.
"Getting caught in the rain," Yan explained briefly.
“I still don’t understand.” Milo shook his head.
"Standing in the rain will get you wet, and after being rained on, you'll get soaked." Yan counted on his fingers, helping Milo sort out the strange cause-and-effect relationship. Milo blinked, experiencing for the first time what it felt like to have a sudden, damned epiphany:
"So the fact that she wasn't in the rain means she wasn't wet... Oh~~."
"Well said and well-founded, I almost couldn't help but applaud you."
Myloxin takes oral medication.
In fact, in some deserted corners of the office, several people were already applauding Yan's snake-skin logic.
"There is absolutely no reason to refute it; it is flawless."
This is the message Eric conveyed to Milo in sign language.
Milo sighed; he was beginning to regret bringing Yan into this office.
He could roughly imagine that the conversations between the exiles in this office would be filled with Yan's bizarre pronouns, such as "in the rain" replacing "love."
It's best to avoid this situation as much as possible.
Since it's sign language communication, which is already difficult, there's no need to add more difficulty.
……
“Okay, so you mean this Ms. Ferguson is likely in some trouble she can’t get away from.” Milo forcefully steered the conversation back on track, asking, “Do you have any other, more accurate information if we’re planning to go find her?”
“Hmm…that’s the main reason I came to see you.” Yan nodded and said, “Aya mentioned that her meeting with her former boss took place in Yaden Village. You are now an enforcer, so you should know more about the special nature of that place than I do.”
"I see."
Milo rubbed his temples.
“Let me ask you a question again. If she isn’t the person in the rain for you, then why should we take such a big risk to go to Yaden Village to look for her? Given that one of us is a law enforcement officer and the other is a city guard, the risk is several levels higher than for ordinary people.”
"Um--"
After listening to Milo's words, Yan fell into deep thought.
He rested his chin on his hand, elbows on the table, and frowned.
Its shape is very similar to the famous sculpture "The Thinker".
Clearly, Milo's words plunged him into a peculiar state of self-contradiction.
……
Milo didn't disturb Yan's thoughts. He put his hands behind his head, leaned back, and waited for what was to come.
Five minutes later, Yan suddenly stood up:
"She knows my plans, my name, so those people are very likely to come after me. What do you think about that...?"
"Congratulations on finally finding a barely plausible reason."
Milo rolled his eyes.
He stood up and put on a mask and hat.
"Then let's go, I'll go with you."
……
Even a fool could tell who was in the rain.
Milo didn't say it outright.
Yan is the kind of person who would help him unconditionally, so he has every reason to help him make this trip.
